  • The script title was originally "The United States of Uhh-merica", and the working title was "3001".

  • Unsure of how to market the film after disastrous test screenings, Fox sat on the near-completed film for over a year, before finally giving it an unusually small release in only 6 markets (skipping over major markets such as New York City). The release was done with little to no marketing.

  • The very small Surgeon General's warning seen on the Tarrylton's Cigarettes billboard reads: "Warning: The Surgeon General has one lung and a voicebox but he could still kick your sorry ass".

  • When Rita paints a picture of Joe, the resulting picture has a striking resemblance to Butt-Head of "Beavis and Butt-Head" (1993). Mike Judge, writer/director of "Idiocracy", was also the creator of "Beavis & Butt-Head" and provided their voices.

  • The reference to Doctors Altschuler and Krinsky, who operate on jet ski-injured Clevon, is an homage to "King of the Hill" (1997) writers/producers John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky.

  • The object that causes the Garbage Avalanche of 2505 is a beer can - which is recyclable.

  • When Joe is being apprehended by the police in Costco, the background screens display why he is wanted: "For being a dick" "For excaping from jail" "For fucking up lots of shit"

  • The average length of a shot is 1.9 seconds.

  • Artie Lange auditioned for a role.

  • The presidential RV has the number 28000, which is the real FAA tail number for Air Force One.

  • The "chase" music in the movie - fast tempo staccato violins and drums - is homage to the iconic music themes used for chase scenes in Planet of the Apes (1968), also about being pursued in a dystopian future, and also produced by Twentieth-Century Fox.

  • Although the marketing campaign for this film went unnoticed, 20th Century Fox decided to actually license out the "Brawndo" drink for sale. The drink itself has gained a cult following and is still available for purchase as of May 2008 at www.brawndo.com.

  • Frito's last name, "Pendejo", is a Spanish insult which means pubic hair but coveys the same sentiment as "dickhead".

  • When Joe is being run down by the giant machines of destruction, at one point they prepare to run at him from either side, and the announcer refers to this maneuver as "the Mallachi Crunch." The Mallachi Crunch was a similar maneuver executed by two brothers (last name Mallachi) during episodes that featured a demolition derby on "Happy Days" (1974) ("Fonzie Loves Pinky", parts 1-3).

  • The premises of this movie - someone waking up several hundred years in the future and finding that people have gotten much stupider due to evolutionary pressure - was previously used in "The Marching Morons", a short story written in 1951 by Cyril M. Kornbluth.

  • After Joe escapes from prison and is running down the street he passes the burnt-out shell of the DeLorean from Back to the Future (1985).
