The Austrian director of The White Ribbon reveals that he and the controversial French author have discussed working together
Both are savage pessimists. Both have redefined the limits of their respective art forms. Both have expressed their admiration for the other. But it's only now that the possibility of their working together has been confirmed.
In London to promote his new film, The White Ribbon, Michael Haneke revealed to guardian.co.uk/film that he and the controversial author Michel Houellebecq had discussed mutual projects.
"I've read every book of Houlellebecq's and wondered myself whether we could perhaps work together," he said. "We have considered it and talked about it, but he's got so much to do and I've got so much to do, so we haven't got very far yet."
Houellebecq has long been interested in transferring his work to the cinema. His novel, Atomised, was adapted for the »

Daily Mirror publishes pictures of Harry Potter star smoking what appears to be a joint at a London party
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe provided an early Christmas gift to headline writers when he was photographed smoking what appeared to be a cannabis joint at a London party. The Daily Mirror today duly led with a front-page splash that christened him "Harry Pothead". For good measure, an inside spread pointed out that "the philosopher's stoned".
Radcliffe, 20, was attending a house party in Camden, north London with his sometime girlfriend Laura O'Toole when the images were snapped. They show the actor smoking a hand-rolled cigarette and having a comedy moustache drawn on his face. It is not clear when the photographs were taken.
"He was really friendly and talking about his dad a bit," fellow partygoer Wadia Tazi told the Mirror. "Then he pulled out a huge joint and lit up. »

When it comes to Halloween costumes, Kim Kardashian is erring on the side of excess - even at the expense of sibling harmony. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star is ready to go with three separate characters - Disney characters Princess Jasmine (from Aladdin) and Snow White, as well as a pirate - she told Johnjay and Rich of Phoenix radio station Kiss-fm on Friday. "They're all pretty sexy and fun," she said. Related: Tyra Banks Channels Kim for HalloweenKim's sister Khloe, who also called in, said she wants to go as Catwoman, but is having trouble finding »

With Halloween on the horizon, a lot of people might be planning a shindig of some sort to celebrate. Most will have costume parties, which is terrific, as they usually involve scantily clad females pretending to be something ordinary like a prison guard or dental hygienist, but really sexy. These parties will also most likely contain disturbing, horror-themed food-stuffs, and an increasingly gory display of body parts strewn across the premises like something out of a bad crime scene.
(I tell you, if I had money, I would invest in a Halloween store, as they seem to make mint and only have to work 3 months of the year).
There are also large groups of nerds out there (myself included) who enjoy subjecting their friends to horror movies they may have not yet seen, or seen with a group of people, which is the best way to experience most horror flicks. »

Chris Brown—who's currently doing community labor after pleading guilty to beating his ex-girlfriend Rihanna—has released his new song, entitled "I Can Transform Ya" and featuring the able assistance of Lil Wayne and Swizz Beatz. There’s been a nagging trend in comedies since, oh around the time Kevin Smith and Clerks came onto the scene. For good measure, let’s also throw in the Farrelly Brothers and their cultclassic Dumb & Dumber. Maybe not those specific films, but somehwere around that time or a couple years earlier, comedies decided they needed the over-confident idiot character who would always get his chums into trouble. He’s accompanied by stubborn jackass, who doesn’t want to be there as well as bumbling idiot do-gooder, who usually has something hanging in the balance. Either of these characters can be annoying as all sin, just so long as one of them is. The laughs in these films usually consist of pure out shock toilet humor, involving a character doing something completely outrageous and out of the ordinary. Tucker Max seems to have lived some pretty outrageous times in his life, »

Obama has already proven that.s he.s about 15 times geekier than any previous President. He.s taken pictures next to a Superman statue. He loves his Blackberry more than his children. He has a masterful handle on social networking, and you know what? For good measure, I.m going to throw in the fact that he called Kanye West a jackass too. It.s not really a geeky attribute, but I think geeks can get down with that. Now to add to his already impressive repertoire, The Huffington Post has caught Obama doing the geekiest thing that a geek can possibly do: fight with a light saber. Now this may not be as geeky as that kid who recorded himself doing so in his garage and became an internet sensation, but it.s pretty close. I imagine Republicans will find a way to use this to their benefit. Perhaps »

Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself
Directed by: Tyler Perry
Cast: Taraji P. Henson, Adam Rodriguez, Tyler Perry
Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: September 11, 2009
Plot: A selfish lounge singer (Henson) must learn the responsibility of family when she is left in care of her misguided niece and two nephews.
Who’s It For? Perry’s faithful audience – both to a higher being and to everything the entrepreneur has ever released (plays, TV shows, feature films). They’ll have no problem accepting the same preaching echoed from his previous works. But those who haven’t already gotten into the world of Perry will probably be bored.
Expectations: Having seen a fair amount of Tyler Perry’s plays (and a few of his films), I didn’t expect much from I Can Do Bad All By Myself to be different. I assumed that a character »

There's been a good deal of chatter about Law Abiding Citizen, and not all of it has been positive. For good or ill, the trailer for the film seems to let you know exactly where you are, and thus viewers are moved to quick decisions. You're either interested in a film about a guy who starts dealing out his own form of justice while in prison, or you aren't, and that's the kind of story that sets people pretty firmly in once camp or the other. On the other hand, you might be a fan of Jamie Foxx or Gerard Butler, and then what the movie is about might not be that important. For me, there's still one more hand to consider, and that is Kurt Wimmer. The man behind Equilibrium (a favorite of mine), and the screenplays for the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, and The Recruit, Wimmer »

Maura Tierney is departing NBC's "Parenthood," citing her cancer treatments as the reason behind her move.
NBC will recast the role and still hopes to have the show on the air in time for midseason.
"Maura Tierney regrets that she will not be able to continue her role on 'Parenthood' due to a conflict with the production schedule of the show and her breast cancer treatments," a rep for Tierney said. "Ms. Tierney and her doctors remain confident that the outcome of her treatments will be positive. She is deeply disappointed t... »

Actor Jason Isaacs struggled with his role in Nazi movie Good - because he forced himself to read heart-wrenching Holocaust diaries.
The Harry Potter star plays the best friend of a man who becomes a Nazi in 1930s Germany - but the intensity of his part left Isaacs emotionally scarred.
He tells Total Film magazine, "Making Good was a very bleak time for me because I felt like I had a responsibility to revisit the Holocaust so I read only diaries from the time.
"It gave me an insight into the many rationalisations that people used to get through the day." »

Between the two gestating Darren Aronofsky projects, Robocop and Black Swan, the latter is by far the one with the most traction. Natalie Portman signed on for the lead role a month ago, and now THR's Risky Business is reporting that Fox Searchlight is coming very close to distributing it. Robocop, however, remains in perpetual development. Will it ever get made? Aronofsky has been cagey about discussing Robocop lately, and Risky Business thinks it might be because he's about to drop out entirely. Apparently MGM, who wouldn't comment on the story, is quietly looking for other directors in case Aronofsky's commitment to Black Swan means they can't get Robocop finished for the 2011 release date. Given Aronofsky's tendency to linger over projects for years and years, it's almost impossible to imagine that a Robocop released in 2011 could have his name on it. It's too early to call the whole thing finished, »

Chris Martin and Gary Barlow have been fighting over who writes the best songs. The Coldplay frontman has struck up a friendship with the Take That singer since they performed together at a charity concert in London last week, and the duo have been debating which of them is most talented.
A source said: "It was all on jest as they've developed a surprisingly strong friendship despite being from very different pop and rock worlds."
"Each has racked up plenty of famous songs, but they eventually decided to call it even."
"Back For Good" singers Take That have notched up 11 U.K. number one singles - including two cover versions - while Coldplay have reached the top spot just once in Britain with "Viva La Vida."
