Preview: 2012

6 November 2009 4:01 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying Independence Day was a big movie, with a place in cinematic history. Roland Emmerich has been the prince of diminishing returns since, but remains the current king of the global disaster movie. With next week’s 2012, he’s hoping to get his career back on track.

10,000 BC was universally panned, so he has decided to go back to what he does best. Namely, destroying contemporary landmarks, and killing a large percentage of the population. Emmerich loves himself a budget, and epic scale CGI, and judging from the trailer, he has used both liberally. There have been plenty of pre-release clips to encourage the hype. You can see a five minute clip in full HD here, some additional clips here, and some behind the scenes footage here.

As usual, however, there is a human story to be told. In this case, it »

Angelina Jolie in New Teaser Trailer as Agent Salt

4 November 2009 5:42 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I love salt, all types of salt really – Sea salt, table salt, rock salt and Evelyn Salt. Not familiar with that last one? She’s next summer’s female action spy played the ever so pouty-lipped Angelina Jolie. At one point, Tom Cruise was rumored to be attached to the Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, The Bone Collector) directed secret double agent yarn but ultimately, Noyce and company decided to go with a more feminine touch. Good move guys!

Jolie has proven time and again that she is the go-to woman in Hollywood for lead female action roles. Say what you want about the Tomb Raider movie, but as Lara Croft there can be no other woman playing the part. Same goes for her roles in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and last summer’s Wanted. In Salt, she appears to be just as convincing while playing a wrongly accused woman on the run. »

After piloting Serenity and stealing scenes in other secondary roles, Alan Tudyk is taking on evil itself. Whether he realizes it or not. In the indie horror-comedy Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil, Tudyk and Tyler Labine ("Reaper") play a pair of hapless hillbillies who are mistakenly accused of being psycho killers by a group of college kids camping at the same lake where the hillbillies have just moved into a cursed cabin. The movie comes from writer-director Eli Craig -- check out the... »

Joss Whedon Will Gladly Buy the Rights to 'Terminator'

2 November 2009 12:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The rights to the Terminator franchise have only been up on the auction block for about as long as it takes Arnold Schwarzenegger to emerge naked from a time bubble, but a veteran Hollywood mogul has already expressed interest in taking the brand off the hands of the now-bankrupt Halcyon; and that vet is none other than Toy Story, Alien: Resurrection, and Titan A.E. screenwriter Joss Whedon (oh, and he created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and "Firefly"/Serenity, but I don't think anyone has ever heard of those).

Mr. Whedon took the time out of his busy schedule running his latest TV show, the Eliza Dushku starring "Dollhouse", to write an earnest letter to Halcyon making the case for why he's the right man for the job. And as with all things Whedon, his proposal has its fair share of the funny.

In it, he outlines the six possible directions he'd take the franchise, »

Exclusive: Nathan Fillion Compares 'Greatest American Hero' To 'Firefly,' Campaigns For Reboot

28 October 2009 2:02 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Castle" star Nathan Fillion is already a hero to many fans due to his place in Joss Whedon's over-too-soon "Firefly" universe, but could he be the "Greatest American Hero"?

When the actor dropped by Splash Page HQ, he shared some thoughts about his hopes for rebooting the classic early-'80s television series about a teacher who's given a suit that grants him superhero powers, only to lose the instruction manual. Comparing the award-winning series' demise to that of the much-loved "Firefly," Fillion explained why he's the perfect choice to star in a "Greatest American Hero" reboot.

"I think 'Greatest American Hero' is ripe for a comeback," Fillion told MTV News. "I know I'm Canadian, but I think I could put my hat in for that one."

"I just finished watching the DVD collection of it and thought it had some really great direction and I think it kind of »

New Clip and Interview with ‘V’ star Morena Baccarin

23 October 2009 9:41 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

In a couple of weeks ABC Television will air its remake of the 80s sci-fi hit V. Audiences are all crossing their fingers and hoping that this remake is much better than the past couple of attempts by television studios (Knight Rider, Bionic Woman). Right now, all hopes of success are resting on the shoulders of one vaguely known actress: Morena Baccarin. If you look at all of the marketing leading up to the November 3rd premiere one face sticks out looking down on the city on the bottom of a huge inter-galactic spaceship and it’s Anna (Baccarin).

For an actress that only has a handful of TV shows under her belt (Firefly, Stargate:sg-1) and two movies (Serenity, Stolen Lives), she sure does have a lot to live up to. She seems to be up to the challenge though and is handling all the press in stride. Recently, Christopher John Farley at Speakeasy, »

The Center Of The Whedonverse Is In The MTV Newsroom

22 October 2009 2:08 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

It's a busy day in the MTV Newsroom today. At the moment, Tim Kash is sitting down for a chat with Alicia Keys (she says her new album The Element of Freedom will be a big, synthesizer-heavy departure from her past work). But there's another interview happening just around the corner: "Gossip Girl" and "Mercy" star Michelle Trachtenberg is here to talk about straddling two hit TV shows.

Trachtenberg is probably best known for playing Dawn on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," a show created and produced by Joss Whedon. In the past few months, it seems as though we've had a regular rotation of alums from Whedon shows stop by to hang out and chat about their new projects. They are all members of a tightly-wound, closely-followed community known as the "Whedonverse," which represents the various projects that Whedon has worked on in his two-decade career.

Peeking Behind the Doors of Seismic Change: Televisionary Talks to "Endgame" Star Chiwetel Ejiofor

20 October 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

Golden Globe nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor is perhaps best known for his work in such diverse films as American Gangster, Dirty Pretty Things, Serenity, Love Actually, Redbelt, and Kinky Boots. The British actor has made a career of playing deeply complex individuals, from cross-dresser Lola in Kinky Boots to Dirty Pretty Things' cab driver and former doctor Okwe. In PBS' gripping apartheid thriller Endgame, which airs Stateside this Sunday as part of the new season of Masterpiece Contemporary, Ejiofor, recently appointed an OBE by Queen Elizabeth, plays South African political figure Thabo Mbeki, a key player in secret negotiations between the African National Congress and the South African government that were brokered by Consolidated Goldfields. Remarkably these talks resulted in an end to apartheid in South Africa and Endgame, written by Paula Milne and directed by Pete Travis, dramatize the secret talks, which occurred at Mells Park, an estate in England. »

Joss Whedon + Glee = 2 Good 2 Be True?

Stop it, Fox. Stop making us so damn happy! Not only is Glee quickly becoming our favorite series on television this season—there, we said it!—but Fox just confirmed to us that the addictive new show has just tapped Joss Whedon to direct an upcoming episode.  Yes, that Joss Whedon. You know, the guy who created Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Serenity, Dr. Horrible and now Dollhouse (which returns Friday). He also has directed The Office twice, so it seems his taste in television does not suck. So how did these two great flavors come together? And more importantly, who is Joss going to kill once he gets onto the set of Glee? Here's what he just spilled... Joss posted on... »

Nathan Fillion Talks Trucker, Castle, Joss Whedon & Superheroes

15 October 2009 8:09 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Quick, think of the most underrated, under-appreciated Canadian in Hollywood! If you said Céline Dion then I will hunt you down and flog you with a mackerel. The correct answer is Nathan Fillion. This 37 year old, chiseled jaw specimen of a man (my wife made me say that) has an acting career going back to 1993 with several small roles in films and shows you probably never heard of until 1998 in Saving Private Ryan. From there, his career started building, mostly in TV, and he started gaining fanboy support that almost rivals Bruce “The Chin” Campbell.

And just like Campbell, all of his TV shows were canceled. Two Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place went down after 4 seasons, Firefly (which to this day remains one of the best shows on TV never to finish), the very short lived Drive, and now Castle which almost didn’t have a second season »

Who Should Direct 'The Avengers' Instead Of Jon Favreau? One Of These Guys!

15 October 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

When Jon Favreau said he would not be available to direct "The Avengers" for Marvel, he opened the doors for speculation about who would be behind the camera.

Favreau's "Iron Man" breathed life into the current wave of Marvel films culminating in 2012's gigantic crossover event, but someone else will have to step in to bring his storyline together with "The Incredible Hulk," "The First Avenger: Captain America" and "Thor."

Here are five directors who might be able to pull it off and make the "Avengers" movie fans want to see.

Zack Snyder: Was "Watchmen" Snyder's last word in superhero movies? Its box office performance may have made that debatable, but its visual presentation was spectacular. Snyder's name sits on a short list including Brett Ratner and Bryan Singer who have tackled superhero team movies in recent years, and his name comes at the top right now.

What Drives Nathan Fillion

14 October 2009 5:02 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Even if Nathan Fillion weren't currently playing the eponymous mystery writer on the hit TV series "Castle," the genre fans out there would surely know the charming Canadian actor from his work with cult-beloved producer Joss Whedon. Fillion had a pivotal role as a serial-killing priest in the final episodes of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," captained both the ship and ensemble cast of space western "Firefly" (and its spin-off feature "Serenity"), and goofily played Neil Patrick Harris' superhero nemesis in Whedon's web musical "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog."

Fillion currently co-stars in writer-director James Mottern's terrific desert drama "Trucker," starring Michelle Monaghan in a career-launching performance as Diane Ford, a free-spirited (okay, promiscuous) big-rig driver who's forced to watch over the 11-year-old son she all but abandoned to her ex. Fillion plays Diane's drinking buddy Runner, one of the locals whose casual relationship with her proves complicated by the fact that he's married. »

Joss Whedon Planning 'Dollhouse' Comic Book?

13 October 2009 7:38 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Taking a look at Joss Whedon's comic book resume is a bit like listing off his numerous contributions to television. Unfortunately for fans of "Dollhouse," the creator's latest endeavor has yet to join "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Serenity" and "Angel" in the center of his proverbial TV-to-comics Venn diagram. Of course, as Whedon readers have come to expect, all it takes is the right idea to get the creator knee-deep in a new project.

Even though no projects are set in stone, Dark Horse Comics' Senior Managing Editor Scott Allie was able to shed a little more light on the possibility of "Dollhouse" comics at this past weekend's Baltimore Comic-Con, according to ComicBookResources.

"'Dollhouse? There's a chance," Allie explained.

"When Joss first told me he was going to do the 'Dollhouse' show, I said 'Well, I know you don't want to do comic right away, but »

Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods Pushed to 2011

12 October 2009 3:02 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The Cabin in the Woods, a twisted and unusual take on the usual formula, was written by Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Serenity's Joss Whedon and directed by Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard. The movie was initially set for release on February 5, 2010, but ShockTillYouDrop reports that MGM Studios has decided to push the movie back to January 14, 2011.

The good news is MGM claims the response to the movie has been "phenomenal," and will take the next six months to convert the movie into 3-D. The bad news is that Whedon fans will have to wait another year for the highly anticipated horror flick. To make matters worse, Cabin actor Brian White (Fighting) told Moviehole the movie is terrific.

He's created a new take on the "Cabin in the Woods" formula and it's incredibly funny, it's gory, and it's smart. Any genre fan is going to really, really going to love this. »

'Fellowship of the Ring' at Radio City Music Hall: High-class geekery

10 October 2009 8:47 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Last night, NYC's Radio City Music Hall played host to a screening of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring. Which would've been awesome enough by itself, given that Radio City is a fantastic place to see a film, and I haven't seen Fellowship on a big screen since its initial 2001 release. But what made it super special was that Howard Shore's score was performed, live, by a 300-person orchestra, along with a massive choir. The movie remains as majestic as it ever was -- but watching it with a crowd who knew »

Exclusive: Nathan Fillion Wants To Be ‘The Greatest American Hero’

8 October 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Nathan Fillion has been many things in the eyes of fans, from the cocky superhero Captain Hammer to the captain of Serenity, Mal Reynolds. A few fans even saw him as the Green Lantern. But who does Nathan Fillion really see himself playing on the big screen? Why, the Greatest American Hero, of course!

In a recent interview Fillion did with The Flickcast, he mentioned that he thought he’d be perfect for the role originally made famous by William Katt. The 1980’s TV show was about high school teacher Ralph Hinkley who is asked to become a superhero after being given a special alien suit with powers that he never really learns how to use or control. The show also co-starred the awesome Robert Culp as FBI agent Bill Maxwell and Connie Sellecca as Hinkley’s significant other.

The show went on for three seasons, spawned a spin-off, and »

Dreamy Nathan Fillion Talks Trucker

8 October 2009 3:00 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Nathan Fillion has a rakish, confident, real-man presence that is completely refreshing, partially due to the fact that manliness is an increasingly rare quality in actors. Joss Whedon put it to good use in the cowboy sci-fi cult series Firefly, its film adaptation Serenity, and the writer's strike online hit Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog (where Fillion played 'Captain Hammer'), and ABC has been taking advantage of him lately with roles on Desperate Housewives and a lead on the show Castle. In James Mottern's Trucker, which premiered at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, Fillion is in a supporting role as Runner, the best friend of Michelle Monaghan's titular trucker, Diane Ford. It's a relationship that takes turns both familiar and surprising, and Fillion and Monaghan have a chemistry not unlike his doctor/patient heat with Keri Russell in Waitress. Nathan Fillion’s Castle Stands Strong

30 September 2009 8:10 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Can you believe it?! Nathan Fillion is the lead in a television series that made it to a second season!

Castle, the new hit ABC series is moving full steam ahead into its second season and it looks like it just might have a bright future.

I don’t get it. Everyone who watches Fillion on screen immediately falls in love with the guy and the characters he plays, yet he’s had two shows in a row canceled on him early. Join us as we look back at some key moments in Fillion’s career and talk about his recent successes…

Although, he made a name for himself with Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place alongside Ryan Reynolds, Nathan Fillion’s cult following began with Joss Whedon’s Firefly, which was incredible, but was unfairly treated by Fox and thereby canceled only a fraction into its first season. »

Yesterday, I gave you the full breakdown on the "Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths" featurette that appeared on the DVD for DC's "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies" animated movie. Not only did we get our first look at Ultraman, Power Ring and the rest of the Jla's alternate-universe counterparts, The Crime Syndicate, but we also found out about the origins of the next animated feature from the DC Universe.

However, since my recap and the shoddy-at-best images I posted only go so far, here's an exclusive video preview of "Crisis On Two Earths," courtesy of the good folks at DC and Warner Bros. Premiere. I'm pretty sure you'll agree that it's even better than I described it—and that James Woods makes a pretty terrifying Owlman.

So, tell me, folks—was that Justice League Detroit we caught a glimpse of there? Read on for the full specs on "Justice League: Crisis On Two Earths, »
