6 Actors That Should Probably Not Watch Their Own Movies

23 November 2009 7:16 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

When I interviewed Bill Nighy last year, three things seemed to stand out about the man. One, he shakes hands with only the front part of three fingers like I have to imagine witches do. Two, he had a greater sense of humor about himself than anyone else I've ever met. Three, he was insanely, effortlessly cool. He continues to exude both coolness and the self-effacing grace that makes him such a charismatic personality (aside from the willingness to star in serious work and movies about werewolves fighting vampires) by claiming that he can't stand the experience of watching movies that he's in. He, like most actors who have thrown out that claim in the past, seems completely put off by seeing himself on screen. Hardly an original claim, but one that rings true for anyone who has ever seen a bad photo of themselves (be they regional theater actors or international film stars). So I decided »

Kanye West Isn't The Only Bad Boy In Video Music Awards History

James Montgomery reminds us that Kanye isn't the first to act up on the Vma stage, in his Bigger Than the Sound column.

The MTV Video Music Awards have given us some certifiably legendary moments over the years — from Madonna's "Like a Virgin" performance in 1984 to Nirvana's unforgettable set in 1992, from Britney's coming-out party in 2000 to this year's Michael Jackson tribute, with about a million stops in between. If you can think of a groundbreaking performance or star-making turn, there's a pretty good chance it happened at the VMAs.

That said, for better or worse, the VMAs have — at times — also been a stomping ground for celebrity bad behavior. And in line with that, er, legacy, the media world is in an uproar over Kanye West's onstage antics at Sunday's VMAs, »

Robin Wright Penn, Alan Arkin And Keanu Reeves Come Together For 'The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee'

13 August 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

That's quite an interesting lineup, eh? Writer/director Rebecca Miller, who also wrote "Proof," is back with her first directing gig since 2005's "The Ballad of Jack and Rose." "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee," adapted from Miller's own book, follows the titular Pippa (Robin Wright Penn) as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery after her older husband (Alan Arkin) moves the family to a suburban retirement community. See, Pippa has something of a spotty history and she's going to have to work through some of that in order to adjust to her new life away from the city.

I have here the latest poster for "Pippa Lee," touting a pretty dynamite cast which includes Maria Bello, Monica Bellucci, Blake Lively, Julianne Moore, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. Whew. Look for "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee" in theaters later this year, on October 23. Hit the jump for the full poster. »

Hope Davis Talks About Portraying Hillary Clinton

12 July 2009 8:27 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Up until a few weeks ago, Julianne Moore was to star as the Hillary to Dennis Quaid's Bill in HBO Films' upcoming The Special Relationship. Moore then announced that she would withdraw from the project due to scheduling conflicts. EW now reports that HBO has signed Hope Davis (Proof, American Splendor) to take her place.

The project's focus is the relationship between Bill Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, but part of the movie will dramatize Hillary Clinton's relationship with Bill during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Davis talked to EW about her identification with the situation:

Almost every woman in the world has been in that position -- it was a long time ago in my life -- where the person that you trusted looks at you and says, "I have an admission to make." It's a moment we've all lived through. Davis also reflected on »

Paltrow Eyes Stage Return

8 May 2009 5:20 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Gwyneth Paltrow is in talks to return to the London stage seven years after her last theatre performance.

The star has not been in a play since she starred in a 2002 production of Proof at the British capital's Donmar Warehouse.

But Paltrow - who lives in London with her husband Chris Martin and their two kids - is reportedly keen to take a break form her movie career and tests her skills on the stage once again.

And the Iron Man star, who is currently filming a sequel to the blockbuster in Los Angeles, has reportedly chosen a new production of Anton Chekhov's The Three Sisters to make her comeback, according to British newspaper the Daily Mail.

The Three Sisters is being considered for a run at London's Haymarket theatre next year. »

20 Years of Summer Movies, A Love/Hate Relationship

7 May 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

With the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the 2009 summer movie season has begun. A cursory glance at the upcoming slate of summer releases looks pretty weak this year, but I’m not here to look ahead. Instead, I noticed that we’ve reached the twenty-year anniversary of the “true” summer movie age. Sure, Jaws and Star Wars were the godfathers of the movement, and the close-following summers since that time often saw two or three big releases looking to cash in on the popcorn-munching crowd, but it was 1989 when the summer movie calendar started to become bloated. The large number of crowd-pleasing titles (and bevy of sequels) included the following: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Batman, Ghostbusters II, License to Kill, Star Trek V, Lethal Weapon 2, The Abyss, Honey I Shrunk the Kids and, to a lesser extent, The Karate Kid: Part III. So on the Platinum Anniversary of the summer flick phenomenon, »

Paltrow Defends 'Childlike' Allen

4 February 2009 11:10 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow has come to the defence of British pop star Lily Allen - urging the press to leave the singer alone. Paltrow knows Allen through the Smile hitmaker's screenwriter mother, Allison Owen, who worked with the actress on two films - 2003's Sylvia and Proof in 2005.

And the Iron Man star is adamant the wide media coverage of Allen's personal life is unfair - because the 23-year-old is so young for her age.

Paltrow tells Britain's Elle magazine, "The way I feel about that is: shame on you. They're doing that to a child! Lily is not a woman yet.

"She'll be Ok because she's a smart girl, and very talented. But this is a big test to get when you're her age. But in a way, if it makes her go in a good direction, what a blessing. Think about all the c**p she's got out of the way." »

Vanity Fair's Hollywood ~ Episode 10 (2004)

2 February 2009 5:20 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Missed previous episodes? The Hollywood Historian in me was busy last year. See: 1995 , 1996, 1997, 1998 , 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

With the annual Vanity Fair "Hollywood" issue about to debut for 2009 -- I'm guessing we see the new cover in less than two weeks (Update: the new cover has been leaked and Vanity Fair has chucked their traditional photo shoot *sniffle* for the millionth magazine cover featuring President Obama), let's briefly return to our Vanity Fair retrospectives. "Send in the Gowns" was the title of 2004's photo shoot and they returned to the first year's game plan of glamour girls. The cover was more crowded though, bringing us an unlucky 13. But who was this cover unlucky for?

Maybe all of them, with the exception of Maggie Gyllenhaal (hurrah) and Hilary Swank (known affectionately around these parts as Beelzebub), who was just 11 months away from her second Oscar. Vanity Fair had gotten less daring in their cover »

New Official Trailer For ‘Killshot’

14 January 2009 10:07 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Today we have the new official trailer for Killshot, an action-thriller with a big cast that should have come out years ago.

Killshot, based on the 1989 novel of the same name by Elmore Leonard, is the story of a woman who witnesses a crime and as a result is put into Witness Protection with her husband. The plot thickens as they start to find out they may not be so well protected while the hitman from the earlier crime and a psychopathic killer target them.

The film is directed by John Madden (Proof, Shakespeare in Love) and stars Mickey Rourke, Tom Jane, Diane Lane, Rosario Dawson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The film has gone through years of production issues and while filmed way back in 2005, it is now finally arriving for its official theatrical debut after a series of test-screenings and re-edits.

Killshot has a solid cast but it’s not »
