A pair of Gossip Girl casting notes to close the week:
Aaron Tveit will reprise his role as Tripp, Nate’s cousin, for at least six episodes this November. Reportedly, Tripp will announce plans to run for office and Nate will get involved with the campaign.
Also, Entertainment Weekly reports that Sarah Steele has been cast in the potentially recurring role of Kira Abernathy, a Constance Billard student. She debuts on November 9 and is best known for her role as Bernice in Spanglish.
No offense to these actors, but they are nothing compared to the guest stars lined up for next week's all-new episode: Hilary Duff and Tyra Banks will both appear!

A Gossip Girl insider confirms to me exclusively that Broadway vet Aaron Tveit is reprising his role as Nate's wealthy cousin, Tripp Vanderbilt, this November for at least six episodes.
Idle Gossip says the politically minded Tripp will announce that he's running for office (possibly the senate) and Nate will get involved with his campaign. I'm told Holley Fain, who played Tripp's fiancée, will also be returning for multiple episodes.
Tveit will juggle his Gossip arc with his current gig on Broadway in Next to Normal.
In other Gg casting news, Sarah Steele (Spanglish) has been cast in the potentially recurring role of Kira Abernathy,

Spotlight: Kazimir Boyle

While I was shopping around CDbaby, I came across the music of Flatland, an animated feature starring triangles, squares and circles. Further investigation about this music lead me to its composer, Kazimir Boyle who had some interesting project on his résumé. After a string of projects on which he worked at Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions (Hannibal, Spirit), Boyle had now set up his own company named Flash Music LLC. where he produces music that's as colourful and imaginative as the delightful Flatland score.
What made you fascinated with music when you were a child?
Like many children, I started with music in the school band. I chose the trumpet but the band director assigned me the trombone. I was fascinated that I could play louder than anyone else.
Do you have any distinctive memories about film music?

To celebrate the Us release of Julie and Julia tomorrow, rental giant Blockbuster has quizzed American film fans on their food favourites. The comedy/drama follows the year-long attempt of frustrated office temp Julie Powell (Amy Adams) to cook all 524 recipes in the cooking bible Mastering the Art of French Cooking by famed celebrity chef Julia Childs (Meryl Streep) and is already prompting film fans to head into the kitchen and whip up something tasty. So what other onscreen culinary creators do American film fans rate according to the survey? Only one with four legs, a tail and lots of fur. Yes, Remy the rat from Disney•Pixar’s 2007 animation Ratatouille scored nearly half the vote with a whopping 45 percent. Click over to find out which movie chefs were rated as worse than a rodent.

Judd Apatow & James L. Brooks Are 'Funny People' With Similar Careers

History isn't typically a laughing matter, but in the case of famed director-producer-writer James L. Brooks, it usually is. Brooks, whose credits include "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "Taxi" and "The Simpsons," has a long and esteemed history in the movie and television business, though his hasn't always been an easy road. Still, it's also not a unique road; the path that Brooks traversed has been walked before, and it's certainly being walked again.
Look no further than "Funny People" director Judd Apatow, whose career is starting to mirror that of James L. Brooks. Sure, the two have wandered down different forks in the road at times, but Apatow's trajectory is nonetheless similar to Brooks' own in some very meaningful ways.
For one, both Brooks and Apatow are well-known for their works on high quality television programming. Brooks created "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," which paved the way for spin-off series' "Rhoda" and "Lou Grant.

Adam Sandler Takes Box Office Title With Disappointing ‘Funny People’

Chicago – Adam Sandler can lay claim to another #1 film with this weekend’s opening of “Funny People,” co-starring Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Jonah Hill, and Jason Schwartzman, but the box office win was bittersweet as the film failed to deliver either by the standards of its star or even its acclaimed writer/director Judd Apatow.

According to Box Office Mojo, “Funny People” made $23.4 million over the weekend with a per-screen average of $7,793. They are not horrible numbers by any stretch, but they do fall below industry and studio expectations.
Two years ago, Judd Apatow’s “Knocked Up” opened with $31 million without the star power of Adam Sandler and even “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” nearly matched the opening of “Funny People” with just over $21 million in 2005.
“Funny People” also fell significantly short when compared to recent Adam Sandler openings.

Judd Apatow's Funny People starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen has debuted at the top of the Us box office with a mere $$23.4 million. The $$75 million-budgeted comedy marks Sandler's worst opening at the North American box office since 2004's Spanglish. Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince has remained in the number two spot for a consecutive week, followed by last week's box office champ G-Force at number three with $$17 million and Katherine Heigl's The Ugly Truth in the number 4 spot with $$13 million. The second debut is the family/adventure movie Aliens In The Attic at number five with $$7.8 million. (more)

‘Funny People’ makes $23.4 million: Will it cover the budget during run?

Not so funny for Universal
Despite rapid-fire penis jokes, a third act collapse and a rather melancholy theme, spit-wad shooter and sometime director Judd Apatow’s latest tour de fart, Funny People, landed at the No.1 position with an estimated $23.4 million.
Starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, Funny People still has some room to grow if it wants to catch its astounding $75-$100 million budget during its theatrical run. (See, that’s what happens when you have Paul Reiser stop by for a cameo. The payroll goes through the roof.) Look at the studio projections (low-$20 million to the mid-$30 million) and Universal may have been gambling on Funny People having a Hangover-like run. Time will tell.
This also marks Sandler’s worst comedy debut since 2000’s Little Nicky. Yet compared to the Happy Gilmore star’s more serious films (Punch-Drunk Love, Spanglish… Going Overboard), Funny People was a weiner winner.

If you think Funny People was tough to figure out as a movie—Is it a comedy? Is it a drama?—try making sense of its box office debut.
The Judd Apatow-directed, Adam Sandler-fronted hybrid grossed $23.4 million Friday-Sunday, per estimates, enough to top the weekend standings.
And while the take reigned over Reign Over Me, Spanglish and Sandler's other uncomic pieces, it didn't really stack up, dollar for dollar, with Apatow's previous films.
Crunching the numbers:
• In comedy, timing is everything. With Funny People, definition is everything. "If you consider it a dramedy, it's a success," Exhibitor Relations' Jeff Bock said today. "If you

It’s a girl! Actress Paz Vega and her husband Orson Salazar welcomed their second child on Friday, July 17th, the Spanglish star confirms. As was planned, daughter Ava Salazar was born in Madrid and weighed in at 7 lbs., 2 oz.
“Paz and Ava are both healthy and enjoying being at home,” her rep Marcel Pariseau confirms to Celebrity Baby Blog. “Paz and Orson are both so excited about the new addition to their young family.”
Due to the baby’s positioning, Paz needed to undergo a cesarean to deliver her daughter. “She was transverse in my womb, so they had to perform a c-section,” the actress explained in interviews with the Spanish press.
While the 33-year-old is “happy” that the delivery went perfectly, she laughs that baby Ava is keeping everyone on their toes with her voracious appetite.

The comedy 'Funny People' has so many great things going for it, it's almost hard to keep track.
For one thing, it's directed by Judd Apatow, the comic -- is "genius" too strong a word? -- behind 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin' and 'Knocked Up.'
And then there are the stars: Adam Sandler, the former 'SNL' star who's known for crowd-pleasing comedies like 'Big Daddy' and 'The Waterboy,' but who's done his share of introspective dramas as well ('Punch-Drunk Love,' 'Spanglish,' 'You Don't Mess With the Zohan' ... Ok, kidding about that last one).

Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson are in negotiations to star in James L. Brooks' upcoming untitled comedy for Columbia Pictures.
Reese Witherspoon is already on board of the project, which focuses on a love triangle, according to Variety. Rudd and Wilson would be playing two men competing for Witherspoon's heart.
Other than that, not much is known about the film, which has the working title "How Do You Know?"
Brooks also directed "Spanglish," "Terms of Endearment" and "As Good as It Gets," and he hasn't done a film in almost five years.
Rudd recently starred in "Role Models." He will next be seen in "I Love You, Man." Wilson, one of the leads in "Marley & Me," will appear in "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian."

After a handful of rumors regarding James L. Brooks' latest film, we finally have some confirmed details. Brooks is directing a project tentatively titled How Do You Know? for Columbia Pictures. Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd are in talks to star opposite Reese Witherspoon in what is being called a romantic comedy with a love triangle. Rudd would play a white-collar executive vying for Witherspoon's affections, while Wilson would play a professional baseball pitcher who is also a love interest. Brooks last directed Spanglish in 2004 as well as As Good as It Gets, Broadcast News, and Terms of Endearment before that.
Sony / Columbia is looking to get production started in the summer for release in 2010. Not only is Brooks directing, but he wrote the screenplay and is producing. As much as we'd love to see Paul Rudd starring in this (I know I want to), he's not entirely

What Films Top Your List of Movies that Didn't Receive Any Oscar Nominations?

Scott Feinberg at The Envelope has created a list of his "The top 25 movies of the past 10 years that got no Oscar love" and it's an interesting idea considering there has been so much hatred aimed at the Academy over The Dark Knight not getting a Best Picture nomination, but it did actually receive eight nominations, which is nothing to scoff at. We are talking about films that didn't receive any nominations, zero, zilch, nada. Any come to mind?
I had never considered the idea since it is a relatively hard thing to imagine that a favorite film of yours didn't receive any Oscar nominations -- wait, is that why general audiences aren't interested in the Oscars? -- but then I went back over my 2003-2008 Top Ten lists and found several that weren't nominated and put together a quick top ten and an example category I think they should have been nominated in.

Review: Bedtime Stories
27 January 2009 11:56 AM, PST
| The Hollywood News

»
Adam Sandler's latest movie finds the funny man collaborating with
the fine folks at Disney . if you can believe that! The end result is
the gentle but tepid family film Bedtime Stories.
In Bedtime
Stories, Sandler plays Skeeter Bronson, a hotel handy man who
entertains his niece and nephew by telling them fantastical stories
that feature elements inspired by his own underappreciated existence.
As the children become more and more enamored by his tales of fancy,
they begin adding their own little twists to the stories. To Skeeter's
great amazement, many of these odd twists . including a massive
gum-ball storm - become a reality. Is there a higher power at work, or
are these strange happenings merely bizarre coincidences?
Bedtime
Stories is harmless enough. In fact, it is by far the least crude of
Sandler's infantile catalog, and this is coming from a fan. Infantile
and Sandler go together like chocolate and peanut butter.
