Film review: Bunny and the Bull

26 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Last week in Film&Music, Brian Logan discussed the perennially vexed question of how to transform Britain's famously high standard of TV comedy into something we can feel good about on the big screen. Here is a case in point. There's no doubt about the ability and the track-records of the people involved. Writer-director Paul King directed The Mighty Boosh on television, and is here making his feature debut with something in a broadly comparable vein: a manky male flat-share comedy, with a strong dash of fantasy and delusion. Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding from the Boosh are in the film, but only in supporting roles. The leads are taken by relative newcomers Edward Hogg and Simon Farnaby. Hogg plays Stephen "the Bull" Turnbull, a guy who has apparently been traumatised by some past event; he now never leaves his ropey apartment, and is tormented by visions of his old mate Bunny, »

Five Things Splash Page Is Thankful For This Year

26 November 2009 6:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

This week, we're all about giving thanks for the people, projects and peripheral stuff that makes our jobs so much fun. After kicking things off with some words from comics legend Stan Lee about what he's thankful for this year, we heard from "Star Trek" duo J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine, "Inglourious Basterds" writer/director Quentin Tarantino (who told us about the comics that inspired his film), "Iron Man 2" actor Sam Rockwell and finally, "Green Lantern" and "Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds.

And now it's my turn, folks.

In a wild year full of comic book movies of the blockbuster and not-quite-blockbuster variety, the introduction of some very unique new series, crossovers that remind us how fun big events can be and a host of other comics-related happenings, there's a lot to be thankful for in the comics scene. So, here are some of the things I'm giving thanks for »

Ruben Fleischer Says Zombieland 2 Will Be in 3-D

26 November 2009 4:02 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer spoke to Moviehole and announced that Sony was interested in making a sequel and that all the principal actors (Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin) are all ready to return.

Fleischer says he would like to shoot Zombieland 2 in 3-D since "the genre really lends itself to [3-D]." Where the sequel will take place or what it will be about is unknown, as Fleischer and company are still trying to "crack" the story.

Before Zombieland 2, however, Fleischer says he would like to make a romantic comedy. Likely one without zombies, considering he already made America's answer to Shaun of the Dead.

Thanksgiving Turkeys, 'Ninja Assassin' And The Pixies In Today's Twitter-Wood

25 November 2009 5:02 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Thanksgiving is a time for giving and making sacrifices, even if you're Jason Reitman and that means giving up your first class seats on a flight for the turkeys being pardoned by President Obama tomorrow. The "Juno" director tweeted a pic today from his travels, leading a pack of other photo posts that included John Hodgman's view from a Pixies concert last night and Denise Richards showing what she looks like while getting her hair highlighted.

Scope those out after the jump along with a discussion about the title of "Ninja Assassin" by Edgar Wright and Bryan Lee O'Malley, Eliza Dushku "World of Warcraft" nerdery on display and more. It's all in the Thanksgiving Eve Twitter-Wood report for November 25, 2009.

Could Zombieland 2 Feast on 3D Human Flesh?

24 November 2009 7:25 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Zombieland was one of this year’s breakout hits and so Sony is naturally hungry for a sequel.  In a recent interview, director Ruben Fleischer says that he’s ready to pick up the zombie-killing rule book again and go to town slaughtering the undead.  Oh, but he does have one more rule he’d like to add: “A sequel to a massively successful comedy horror film starring Woody Harrelson must be in 3D.”

Hit the jump for why Fleischer wants to take his flesh-eaters to the next dimension as well as other details on the highly-anticipated sequel.

[Spoilers ahead for those who haven't seen Zombieland] Moviehole reports that Fleischer is down for a sequel along with original cast members Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin.  Fleischer says that the genre really lends itself to 3D and with the box office success of My Bloody Valentine 3D and The Final Destination, audiences seem to agree. »

Anna Kendrick on Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

22 November 2009 8:54 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Yesterday I participated in a roundtable interview with Anna Kendrick for her new movie Up in the Air.  While I’ll have a full transcript soon, I wanted to share what she said about Edgar Wright’s (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) Scott Pilgrim vs. The World today.  If you didn’t know, she plays Michael Cera’s sister in the movie.

While we didn’t spend that much time talking about the film, she revealed she’s seen some of the movie and says, “You should start emotionally preparing yourself now. It’s so good, people are not going to know what hit them. I have a small role in so I’m allowed to gush. It’s so cool. I’ve never seen anything like it. There’s an energy and a style that I’ve just never seen before and I think it’s going to »

Jason Schwartzman On 'Scott Pilgrim' Director Edgar Wright: 'He's Such A Fan'

20 November 2009 11:58 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

When "Shaun of the Dead" director Edgar Wright was first announced for the big-screen adaptation of of Bryan Lee O'Malley's "Scott Pilgrim" series, you could practically hear the collective sigh of relief around the 'Net. For many fans, the belief was that if anyone can successfully bring the surreal adventures of slacker hero Scott Pilgrim to theaters faithfully, it's Wright.

And while we haven't seen any footage from the much-anticipated film yet, "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" actor Jason Schwartzman would seem to agree with the sentiment that Wright was the right man for the job. Schwartzman plays Gideon, one of the final "evil ex-boyfriends" the title character must battle to win the affection of his girlfriend.

"One of the things that's so great about Edgar is that if he wasn't directing this movie, he would be Ticketholder #1 in line for it," Schwartzman told MTV News. "He is such »

Edgar Wright's 'Times' Complaint, Tom Cruise And Justin Bieber In Today's Twitter-Wood

19 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

For the record, I always link back to the source and cite everyone's tweets that I use from the Twitter-Wood follow list, including Edgar Wright. That's more than can be said for an edited version of an Edward Woodward memorial he wrote on his blog that showed up in edited form on the Times website, though, according to his posts today.

I do make a minimal number of edits, such as the f-bomb in Ice-t's Twitter Pic of the Day winner today, which was followed by yet another Brett Ratner/Michael Jackson pic. You need see that one for the giant wig along. Check it all out after the jump along with a "New Moon" cast shot from Gil Birmingham, Alyson Hannigan's musical Joss Whedon nostalgia and Jamie Campbell Bower's befuddlement over Justin Bieber. Bill Nighy: 'I am not suddenly the greatest actor in the world'

19 November 2009 3:54 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The star of Stephen Poliakoff's forthcoming Glorious 39 on his neuroses, playing educated toffs and why he digs David Hare

"A machiavellian dandy . . . Pure coldheartedness . . . Fabulously insincere." As I read out reviews of an old Bill Nighy performance, the actor grimaces and drums his knuckles on the table. "If ever a face was made for villainy, it's Bill Nighy's," I continue. "Wow," he murmurs. "Nighy's decadently long jaw and narrow, sneaky eyes serve him well . . ." He snorts, amused. "Sneaky eyes! Long decadent jaw! My God. I didn't know I had a decadent jaw."

Perhaps it is how Glorious 39 unfolds around him that makes you never quite trust Nighy as Alexander Keyes, a devoted father and aristocratic Conservative MP in Stephen Poliakoff's sumptuous new thriller about appeasement, set on the eve of the second world war. But perhaps Nighy has a singular talent for projecting unreliability into charming characters. »

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: An Evil Bunny Trash Town Called Liquor!

18 November 2009 9:26 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

True cult status? Whoop-doo!

Both Internet pundits and blog critics alike are quick to bitch about the cliched nature of our current cinematic landscape. While they scream in bold words of disgust, they can't help but fall into a similar trap themselves. They're just as guilty of sipping from this dried well as the rest of our so-called "film community". How often do you read a review that screams, "Instant classic!" Or, "Modern day masterpiece!" How about, "A Triumph!" Then there's, "A true crowd pleaser!" "A thrill ride!" "The funniest comedy of the summer!" And, "Does for (insert blank) what Jaws did for swimming!" The list goes on and on. When it comes right down to it, there's not much new you can say in terms of film theory and structure. When all of our movies are repeats, reboots, and sequels, you have to guess that most critical movements in »

Dead Snow's Tommy Wirkola to Direct Hansel and Gretel Movie

18 November 2009 8:04 AM, PST | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

After making a successful Nazi zombie flick, which can easily be considered the best of the subgenre (we can say that since there's only about 5 Nazi zombie movies), the natural next step is to make a movie about Hansel & Gretel, right? It is if you're Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters will be the Norwegian director's first in the U.S. and will take place 15 years after the infamous gingerbread incident. Dante Harper is writing the script, which is being described as a horror-action-comedy in the Shaun of the Dead vein.

With Dead Snow, Wirkola proved that a gory and funny movie is well within his command. Looking forward to this, though, is there anything wrong with making another zombie movie? Just saying.

Edward Woodward, 'New Moon' And Michael Jackson In Today's Twitter-Wood

16 November 2009 4:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Edward Woodward, the actor best remembered for his starring role in the TV series "The Equalizer" and his once-in-a-lifetime performance in the original pre-bees "Wicker Man," commanded a mountain of memorial tweets today. Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and even Seth Meyers posted memories and favorite performances amid the news of his passing, and I join them. If you haven't seen him in 1973's "The Wicker Man," you're missing out on one of the all-time great horror/musical productions.

There were "New Moon" tweets today, too, of course. Peter Facinelli spent his pre-premiere morning getting his driver's license renewed, while Tinsel Korey posted a pic from outside and BooBoo Stewart prepped at the gym. Check out their tweets after the jump along with a Twitter Pic of the Day starring Michael Jackson and an "Iron Man 2" note from Jon Favreau. Edward Woodward of Wicker Man Dies at 79

16 November 2009 12:25 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Sadly, The Guardian today reported that Edward Woodward has died at 79.  Woodward is perhaps best known for his role as Robert McCall in the popular CBS series The Equalizer.  But horror fans will likely remember him for his role in one of horror's most offbeat films,  The Wicker Man, in which his straitlaced police inspector Robbie travels to a small island to solve the mystery of a missing girl.  He finds more than he expects in the presence of Lord Summerisle, an outlandish performance by Christopher Lee.

A victim of poor health and several heart attacks in his later years, Woodward nonetheless appeared in Shaun Of The Dead director Edgar Wright's police spoof Hot Fuzz.  He succumbed today to pneumonia.

Nick Frost Talks Paul and Tintin

16 November 2009 5:32 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Nick Frost wasn't doing much acting before he met Simon Pegg, who included him in his TV show Spaced and has collaborated with him on Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and the upcoming Paul, a movie about two British comic book geeks (Frost and Pegg) who encounter an alien near Area 51. Unlike their previous collaborations, Paul has Greg Mottola at the helm rather than Edgar Wright, though Frost told Movieline the trio is not breaking up.

It kind of felt like we were cheating on each other, but in a good way — a kind of sexy, duplicitous way. It's good for us all to go off and do other things. Obviously, we'll get back together. People enjoy the stuff that Simon and I do, but I think they get bored of us.

Paul is also the first movie that Frost has co-written with Pegg, though he says it's been planned for years. »

British comedy films: Make 'em laugh! Well, that's the theory

13 November 2009 12:53 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Shaun of the Dead was good, Sex Lives of the Potato Men was bad. So how do you avoid a Britcom disaster?

Anywhere else, it would be a cause for celebration. Later this month, a debut feature is to be released by the director of one of Britain's most popular TV comedies. Bafta-nominated for his work on BBC2's The Mighty Boosh, Paul King is also an award-winning live comedy director – and his new film Bunny and the Bull was selected for both the Toronto and London film festivals. Here, then, is a cheering tale of a home-grown talent making his way in cinema, right? If only it were that simple. "There's a pack mentality with British comic films to go, 'What a heap of shit!'" says King. "Your worst nightmare is, 'Oh God, I just hope my film's not one of those …'"

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Have a Writer to Guide Them

12 November 2009 12:24 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola is still on the warpath, working on his next film, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. As you might remember, Dead Snow is the Nazi zombies in the snow flick that first splashed down at Sundance this year and has been all over the festival circuit ever since. Wirkola has now brought a writer on to the project, which will be a Shaun of the Dead and The Brothers Grimm inspired take on the classic tale of two kids who narrowly escape being thrown into an oven. It is set in the aftermath of Hansel and Gretel's first encounter with the wicked witch of the woods -- in which they have returned to slay witches left and right. Writer Dante Harper, who has reportedly been working with David Fincher on the adaptation of the Charles Burns comic Black Hole (a project long thought to be dead at Paramount), has joined the team »
