The 10th annual Phoenix Film Critics Society awards have been announced, and since I vote in this one, I thought I'd share. Now, in the interest of transparency, I should tell you that these votes don't necessarily reflect my own thoughts, and since I have long maintained the Pfcs has way too many awards, I don't even vote in some of these categories myself, because I am not confident that we are, as a body, completely qualified to do so.
But it was a big year for Inglourious Basterds in the Valley of the Sun, and I'm happy to see that, even if it's not tops on my list. It's a bit more progressive than some of our previous years have reflected. So here they are, beginning first with the society's top ten films of the year in alphabetical order.

A pretty good year.

It seems to be a critical tradition to bewail the awfulness of each year's movies. But how often is this really true? With the annual caveat that it's impossible (and meaningless) to designate one movie or filmmaker as the "best," here are a number of 2009 pictures I liked a lot in various aspects, with one entrant in each category selected, fairly arbitrarily, as the "best," and equally worthy contenders noted below them.
Best Picture:
"Up in the Air" A mainstream film with a complex heart and a brain, too. Not exactly a comedy, not precisely a drama, but as close to a perfect movie as any other this year.
Also really good: "The Hurt Locker": Can it actually have been seven years since Kathryn Bigelow's last picture? This scrappy low-budget film, with a breakthrough performance by Jeremy Renner, …

A casting notice including Green Lantern's love interest Carol Ferris was found in September, and it appears that Warner Brothers has narrowed its selection to five actresses. According to Latino Review, either Eva Green (Casino Royale), Keri Russell (Mission Impossible III), Jennifer Garner (Elektra), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), or Blake Lively (Gossip Girl) will play the part.
Our thoughts: Garner is certainly no stranger to comic book movie fans, but Elektra left a lot to be desired, while Russell provided the voice of Wonder Woman in the animated movie Warners and DC released this year. Kruger had a star-making turn in Basterds, while Lively seems ... largely out of place here. Green may have the upper hand considering that she worked with director Martin Campbell before on Casino Royale. Still, the casting will likely be contingent on how the ladies match up with Ryan Reynolds.
Which actress do you think should get the role? …

Since Moses brought the tablets down from the mountain, lists have come in tens, not that we couldn't have done with several more commandments. Who says a year has Ten Best Films, anyway? Nobody but readers, editors, and most other movie critics. There was hell to pay last year when I published my list of Twenty Best. You'd have thought I belched at a funeral. So this year I have devoutly limited myself to exactly ten films.
On each of two lists.
The lists are divided into Mainstream Films and Independent Films. This neatly sidesteps two frequent complaints: (1) "You name all those little films most people have never heard of," and (2) "You pick all blockbusters and ignore the indie pictures." Which is is my official Top Ten? They both are equal, and every film here is entitled to name itself "One of the Year's 10 Best!"
Alphabetically:
¶ The Top 10 Mainstream Films

Chicago – If only there were more filmmakers with visions as unique as “Inglourious Basterds” and the guts to put their reputation on the line. Thriller, drama, comedy, action film, and a slice of revisionist history that plays as a modern revenge fantasy, “Inglourious Basterds” plays even better the second time through and shines with a fantastic Blu-Ray release. It’s a total blast.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
Audiences were drawn in by previews that incorrectly made “Basterds” look like a big summer action movie, but they found a more dialogue-driven film about the power of propaganda that proved to be even more rewarding. I have to admit that I suspected most viewers would be turned off by “Inglourious Basterds,” but I was happily proven wrong and I think the film serves as proof that not every summer movie needs to be a Michael Bay action extravaganza.
Inglourious Basterds was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on December 15th, …

Emily Blunt has impressed critics with her performance on both "The Young Victoria" and "Sunshine Cleaning", leading to her being nominated for two 2009 Satellite Awards titles. When the winners of the awards were announced however, it was unraveled that she has lost to Shohreh Aghdashloo and Mo'Nique.
On Monday, December 21, the International Press Academy made public Shohreh Aghdashloo bested Blunt in the category for Best Actress in Drama, and Mo'Nique stole her chance at securing Best Supporting Actress title. While she failed to add her award collection, her co-star in "The Devil Wears Prada" Meryl Streep took home Best Actress in Comedy/Musical honor for her performance in "Julie & Julia".
The 26-year-old was not the only double-nominated actress who walked away with no kudo. Her fellow competitor Penelope Cruz has to admit defeat as well. Nonetheless, both of Cruz' movies nailed at least one award. "Broken Embraces" was in tie …

Another day, another comic book movie rumor... but instead of yet another "Spider-Man 4" bite, this time around we have an unofficial report regarding "Green Lantern."
Citing anonymous sources connected to the project, Latino Review reports that casting for Carol Ferris (the love interest of Ryan Reynolds' Hal Jordan) is down to five potential actresses. The list of names covers a wide spectrum of age and on-screen experience, and includes Eva Green ("Casino Royale"), Keri Russell (who voiced the title character in the animated "Wonder Woman" movie), Diane Kruger ("Inglourious Basterds"), Blake Lively ("Gossip Girl") and Jennifer Garner ("Alektra").
"Per the script, Carol Ferris (27) is the daughter of aerospace mogul Carl Ferris," reports the site. "She works for her dad’s company Ferris Air, got an Mba, and has a lifetime crush on Hal Jordan."
It should be noted (again) that the list of potential actresses is entirely unofficial, …

Inglourious Basterds was always a conversation starter. But we didn't expect it to start this conversation. Mélanie Laurent is actually a man!
Actual screenshot (with web menu removed, highlight and "oops" added)
Best Supporting Actor, eh? We always thought it was an odd strategy to position Laurent right out of the Oscar race by vying for Lead Actress. But this is even crazier gambit. Oscar voters do have eyes, you know!
I'm joking. As far as I know Mélanie is still a woman but thanks to readers Rj and Jim T for pointing out this error on theWeinstein Co website. I'm sure someone will fix this pronto but for now let it stand as an amusingly literal and/or satiric demonstration of the absurd modern flexibility for Oscar categorizations. …
