Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Who has been the best guest star on a scripted show?
Tim Surette (@timsurette), TV.com
Wayne Brady showing up in body armor and riding a horse on Syfy’s post-apocalyptic disaster disaster “Aftermath” needs to be mentioned somewhere in this critics’ roundup, so here it is. But I’ll point out two from intentional comedies that come to mind. Timothy Olyphant’s short run on “The Grinder” as himself was fantastic and if I didn’t mention this my coworker Kaitlin would kill me. But my pick goes to David Duchovny, also as himself, on “The Larry Sanders Show.” We’d largely known Duchovny for...

33 years ago today, at age 7, Drew Barrymore hosted “Saturday Night Live,” making her the youngest ever host of the NBC sketch comedy show. She still holds that record today, and she’s hosted the show five additional times since. Her 1982 gig on the show came five months after the release of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestiral.” She reprised her “E.T.” role when she played a homicidal Gertie on “SNL.” Above she’s pictured in the iconic healing E.T. pose with “SNL” cast members Tim Kazurinsky, Gary Kroeger, Brad Hall and Joe Piscopo. As for the second and third youngest “SNL” hosts, Macaulay Culkin and Fred Savage hold those titles, respectively. Other notable November 20 happenings in pop culture history: • 1955: Rock and roll pioneer Bo Diddley made his television debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” • 1959: “The Twilight Zone” episode “Time Enough at Last” — featuring first aired. Early production on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert came to a screeching halt Wednesday as United Airlines flights were grounded, the New York Stock Exchange went dark and dogs began walking on two legs — mass hysteria! Amidst the computer-bred chaos, though, Colbert sought safety in his office and recorded a dire, desperate message pondering humanity's new fate.
"I have to wonder if there's anyone left alive to see this broadcast," Colbert said. "For all I know, I'm the last celebrity alive on earth and the apes have taken over the talk shows.

Here's a spoiler-free look at what to expect from the second series of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith's glorious Inside No. 9...
Inside No. 9 returns to BBC Two on Thursday the 26th of March for six more ingenious genre slices of horror, suspense and psychology. Those who were rattled and gripped by the first round of half-hour plays from Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith know to expect to be skilfully sucker-punched with sharp, tricksy writing and well-drawn characters.
Viewers engrossed by the psychological character focus of series one’s Tom & Gerri, the jump scares of series finale The Harrowing, and the unexpected emotional sting of opener Sardines have lots to look forward to from the second series’ first brace of episodes. Entertainment Earth has revealed five radical action figures that are inspired by some of the classic characters that we've seen in the classic 1960s TV series The Twilight Zone. These are exclusive action figures that were created in conjunction with San Diego Comic-Con, which is set to take place this coming July. The figures include the Gremlin; William Shatner's Bob Wilson; Invader; the alien Kanamit; Henry Bemis, and Talking Tina. The Twilight Zone is my favorite series of all time, and I want these!
The toys will be available at the Entertainment Earth booth #2343. I've included the descriptions that came along with each of the figures.
Bif Bang Pow! presents The Twilight Zone Gremlin 3 3/4-Inch Action Figure in Color, the horrifying creature from the memorable The Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" that starred William Shatner. You wish you had it before, so don't let it pass you by now!

From the panicked airplane passenger who sees a hairy surprise through his window in “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” to the bespectacled man in “Time Enough at Last” who is finally able to read without any interruptions, Bif Bang Pow! is bringing a batch of classic characters from some of the most popular episodes of The Twilight Zone to action figure life, and they’ll be available first as San Diego Comic-Con exclusives at Entertainment Earth’s Booth 2343.
Depicted in color with a 3.75-inch scale (though individual heights vary), these six action figures from The Twilight Zone will become available online in the first week of August if there are any left after their run at Sdcc. If you can’t make it to Sdcc this year, you can pre-order these figures now and hope that some are left over after the show. We have each figure’s image, details and backstory...

55 years ago, television and the genre as a whole would be changed by an amazing show called The Twilight Zone. Rod Serling’s show was a heavy influence on my childhood. While you can pick up the individual seasons on DVD and Blu-Ray, I always thought it would be nice to introduce someone new to the series with some of my favorite episodes. Image Entertainment will be fulfilling the need with The Twilight Zone: Essential Episodes when it hits DVD in July. Read onward for the press release and find out what episodes are essential.

The Av Club suggests that 2013 will be the year that ends TV as we know it. With DVRs diminishing the importance of time slots, the continued rise of cable and the demise of many era-defining shows like 30 Rock and Breaking Bad, there's a good case to be made that the medium has been putting off a big change for a while.
This feels like a spoiler, Once Upon a Time cast Sonequa Martin-Green — who made her Walking Dead debut in the midseason finale — to play a character named Tarmara. I guess I shouldn't get attached to her The Walking Dead character.

This column began as a countdown of the best Twilight Zone episodes of all time. However, in approaching the list, I necessarily brought my own bias to the proceedings. I could try to be as objective as possible, but at the end of the day, with so many great works, many fantastic episodes would get lost in the mix. Everyone knows the standbys, but each person surely has a few odd apples that get tossed into the bunch. I’m no different. I have a soft spot for “The Silence,” in which a man takes a bet not to talk for a year, and it’s revealed at the end that Spoiler Alert he severed his own vocal chords. I also have particular affection for lesser-heralded eps such as “The Rip Van Winkle Caper” and “I Shot An Arrow Into The Air,” with their clever twists on time travel via...

With the entire original run of The Twilight Zone available to watch instantly, we’re partnering with Twitch Film to cover all of the show’s 156 episodes. Are you brave enough to watch them all with us? The Twilight Zone (Episode #99): “Young Man’s Fancy” (airdate 5/11/62) The Plot: A newly-minted husband brings his wife to his childhood home to make plans to sell it, but a powerful force is drawing him back to his late mother and the house she kept exactly as it was when he was in short pants. The Goods: This very well may be the second cruelest episode. Aside from the wicked heartlessness of Time Enough At Last, it rings out with a kind of empty meanness that doesn’t teach a lesson while it tortures an innocent bystander at her weakest point. Sometimes life can be that way, and Virginia Walker (Phyllis Thaxter) learns that the raw way. Virginia...

There’s a new and not-necessarily awful sub-genre in thrillers these days, where the hose is stepped on for hours until the twist is unravelled and water comes a-flooding out. When it’s done right, we’ve been led down a narrow path, shadows and fog obscuring details that were right in front of us the whole time, entertained even while being distracted. When it’s done wrong, it’s your Uncle George trying aimlessly to get a joke out at the dinner table. The Cat Vanishes is a quirky Argentinean psychological thriller that asks the audience to question sanity as a whole, all the while unable to stop giggling about the card it has up its sleeve.

“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” – The Twilight Zone first season opening narration

Pianos and film? Like ebony and ivory, they come together in perfect harmony. Let's hit it
The grand piano. The concert piano. The clavichord. The Casio keyboard. We're all familiar with the many kinds of ivory we can tickle, and it's no coincidence that the film-makers of this world are too. They've been pushing our emotional pedals for decades, using the old Joanna not just to entertain us but to scare us, amuse us – even to seduce us.
The mere physical presence of a piano suggests someone is either going to play it, attempt to play it, or attempt to get laid on it. Or compose some sort of masterpiece on it. Or just get it up some stairs. Yup, put a piano in a scene and film greets music like the intimate old friends they are. Characters talk, emotions are unleashed, and sometimes there's even an impromptu singsong. And...

One of the most distinctive lines to come out of Toy Fair last year was Bif Bang Pow's The Twilight Zone bobbleheads and action figures created in both black and white and color depending on the individual piece. Luckily fans of the classic anthology jumped on these collectibles and the company is expanding the line for 2011. The action figure line will next feature sepia-toned versions of the Alien from the episode "Hocus Pocus and Frisby," Maya the Cat Girl from "Perchance to Dream," the Doctor from "Eye of the Beholder," Henry Bemis and his books from "Time Enough at Last," The Venusian from "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?" and the Invader from "The Invaders."...

You know we are nearing the end of October when the pace of horror DVD title releases starts slowing down. I guess the powers that be banked on everyone buying horror DVDs several weeks before Halloween. Is that true? Are you folks doing just that, or are you only now starting your Halloween viewing party planning?
Anyway, while this week's bounty includes monsters in the water and in the sky, with mostly direct-to-dvd, TV movies and old re-releases, the juggernaut monster is the one in space with a complete set in one neat package.

Now that Warner Bros. has reportedly hired a writer for its new Twilight Zone movie — Jason Rothenberg, whose only credit appears to be a 2009 TV movie called Body Politic — we thought we’d waste some time thinking about which episodes of the vintage TV show Rothenberg should adapt. As you’ll recall, the 1983 big-screen version updated four classic stories from Rod Serling’s old series — “Time Out,” “Kick the Can,” It’s a Good Life,” and “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” — with each segment directed by a different big-name filmmaker (Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, John Landis, and George Miller). That only leaves...

Chicago – Enter the middle ground between light and shadow with the amazing Blu-ray release of the first season of one of the best television programs of all time — “The Twilight Zone”.
Packed with remarkable special features that are all perfectly shaped around a show that has lost absolutely none of its power despite the decades since its original airing and the myriad of programs that it inspired, “The Twilight Zone: Season 1” is the best TV-on-bd release of the year to date.
Blu-ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
My personal adoration for Rod Serling’s landmark creation is hard to overstate. There was a time when I always had an episode in my DVR from one of its cable airings just in case the mood struck me right or I stumbled upon an episode I actually hadn’t seen. I'm not sure how many of you watched that rare interview we posted with Twilight Zone mastermind Rod Serling, but if you didn't watch it I just wanted to point out that in the interview Serling reveals what his favorite Twilight Zone episodes were. I thought this was pretty cool and though you might as well.
Here are his two favorite episodes:
The Invaders
...One was an original by Dick Matheson called 'The Invaders,' with Agnes Moorehead, which was in a sense pure science fiction, with a very O. Henryish twist.
I've always enjoyed watching this episode, and it's definitely at the top of my list. I just love the twist!
Time Enough at Last
...And the other was an adaptation of mine, a very free, loose adaption of a Lucille Fletcher -- I think it was Lucille Fletcher, I could be wrong -- a short story called 'Time Enough at Last,...

A never-before-seen interview from 1970 with "The Twilight Zone" creator Rod Serling has just surfaced on YouTube for the first time, showing sci-fi author James Gunn discussing Serling's show and sci-fi in general. Regarding "The Twilight Zone," Serling stated: "I think it failed in terms of its consistency. It was very good some weeks, quite bad other weeks. But this is pretty much the track record of most television, by virtue of its desperate overexposure and the brevity of time allotted to us to produce something that is qualitative. But overall, I would say that it was a creative series. We did much more creating than we did imitating. I think we tried things . failed frequently, succeeded other times. But I think the mark of the show was the quite perceivable attempt at quality that went on in the show." He went on to say that his two favorite episodes were "The Invaders,...

Almost every time I step out of—or into—my apartment, I expect to see Rod Serling standing there, just out of frame, ready with an ironic comment, ubiquitous cigarette in hand. (The man was a creative genius, but he had little respect for “No Smoking” signs.) And you know, it’s not that I’ve only Just crossed over into the Twilight Zone. I already live there, in the middle ground between light and shadow. Some call it New Jersey.
Anyhow, I often imagine Serling hanging around because, like most of you, I’ve experienced strange, Twilight Zone things in my own life.
