An adorable toddler struck a pose and grinned ear-to-ear during a sweet photo shoot arranged by her loving mother to celebrate the 3-year-old’s first anniversary being cancer free.

It was an emotional day for Debra Messing.
The 49-year-old actress was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, but told Et's Nischelle Turner that despite her decades-long career, this accolade was one she didn't see coming.
" never [dreamed this could happen]," she shared. "I grew up next to a farm in Rhode Island. My big dream was to be a working actress and ultimately to do Broadway in New York City."
"I've fulfilled all of my dreams, and today... it's going to take me a long time to process this," she explained. "It's so, so beautiful."

From a purely marketing standpoint, it makes sense that Dick Wolf’s Law & Order, with its numerous variations, would dip its toe into more obvious true crime. The last year or so has seen a number of true crime shows find commercial and critical success, from the multiple Emmy wins for FX’s The People vs. Oj Simpson:…

When Netflix started taking its originals game seriously — a.k.a. when it started commissioning productions by itself — the surging streaming service quickly earned a prestigious reputation. On the backs of “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black,” the over-the-top platform became an immediate awards contender and critical darling.
But over the last 12 months, as Netflix releases more and more original content, there’s been a noticeable dip in the quality of its dramas; a dip that precedes a changing of the guard for the service when it comes to TV’s kingmaker: the Emmys.
The Good News
Let’s start with what’s working: At this time last year, “Stranger Things” was about to set the summer on fire with a surprisingly addictive and widely beloved first season. Matt and Ross Duffer’s homage to ’80s family fright films earned respectable reviews, but a cultural tidal wave...

James Comey’s testimony before Congress may reflect a dark chapter in American politics, but it also created some of the most riveting live television in history — and, at just under three hours, a gripping feature-length window into the anxieties of our troubled times. While the biggest questions remain unresolved — has President Trump colluded with Russians? obstructed justice? — it created a fascinating spectacle of the highest order.
Moments before testimony began, pundits already discussed the broadcast in movie terms. More than one journalist compared Comey’s appearance to “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” — a private citizen standing before the government, ostensibly taking the moral high ground. However, that comparison failed to convey Comey’s paradoxical nature. Last fall, he emerged from the 2016 presidential election reviled on both sides of the aisle, with his role in the Hillary Clinton email scandal leaving Democrats reeling. However, by the time he was unceremoniously dismissed last month,...

It’s time for a new beginning. The last year’s been a difficult one for the X-Men; in the aftermath of Secret Wars, the mutant race was locked in a battle for survival against the Inhumans. All that finally came to a head in Inhumans vs. X-Men, a miniseries that drew a line under this period – and set the groundwork for something new.
So we move to X-Men: Prime, a one-shot that sets the stage for the X-Men’s next era. The issue united a number of key architects in the next wave of X-Men books; Marc Guggenheim, Greg Pak and Cullen Bunn as writers; Ken Lashley, Ibraim Robertson, Leonard Kirk and Guillermo Ortego as artists. It serves a simple purpose: to establish the bare-bones of the new status quo, essentially serving as an advertisement for everything that’s coming. The good news? It’s a tremendous success.

A marquee panel discussion at this year’s SXSW was “A Conversation with Cheryl Boone Isaacs,” a conversation between the Academy president and “Hidden Figures” screenwriter Allison Schroeder. The hope, if not expectation, was Isaacs would address this year’s notorious Oscars snafu. Instead, the audience heard a string of anecdotes from Isaacs and Schroeder’s careers.

At SXSW, where panelists tackle big issues and big ideas in the entertainment and technology spaces, the pair’s conversation pivoted on a parade of cliches and platitudes, often pausing to name check those in the industry who fight for diversity in Hollywood. But when it came to the Q&A portion — a feature of virtually every SXSW panel conversation, even for famously reclusive filmmaker Terrence Malick — Isaacs took no questions.

The last year was a terrible one for Hollywood deaths, and Sara Bareilles’ captured the scope and pain of the industry’s sadness with her Oscars “In Memoriam” performance of Joni Mitchell’s classic “Both Sides Now.” The segment included such luminaries as Prince to Gene Wilder to Anton Yelchin. It ended with Debbie Reynolds, who died in December, and her daughter, Carrie Fisher, who died the day before the “Singin’ in the Rain” star. As Bareilles concluded her stirring, beautifully rendered performance, the “In Memoriam” segment played an excerpt of Fisher in her role in the 2015 “Star Wars” film “The Force Awakens,...

As Sing arrives in UK cinemas, we chat to its director, Garth Jennings, about lunchbreaks, the movie, and Roald Dahl.
I’m a huge fan of Garth Jennings’ work, from his milk-carton music videos to funny monkey TV ads, and into his feature films, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy and Son Of Rambow. It’s been a long time coming but, after five years of work, Jennings’ third feature, Sing, is about to get its UK cinema release. When we caught up to chat last week, we talked about those five long years of hard work, about the projects that didn’t come together beforehand, and just a little of the plans that Jennings has for now. Here’s how our conversation went.

This signalled the formal end of the Cold War, which left the United States as the sole remaining superpower, but did not necessarily usher in an era of peace at home and abroad. The journey to Sundance is an all-consuming endeavor and most filmmakers don’t lift their heads until they land in Park City with their Dcp in hand.
For some filmmakers, this year was different. The election of Donald Trump, which snapped so many into a new reality they hadn’t imagined, came just two weeks before most Sundance directors received their golden ticket to the festival. So we asked this year’s directors: Did the election change how you thought about your film, and your career as a filmmaker?

Watching the Patterson women being taken advantage of makes for a difficult hour of television.
After the strained events of Being Mary Jane Season 4 Episode 2, though, I have a lot of hope for Mary Jane Paul. She saw the light that is Lee Truitt for what he really is and her walls fell away before him and his friends.
And despite the harrowing developments between Mary Jane and Rhonda Sales, Mary Jane does her best work when pushed to her limits. She excels on the professional battlefield. Rhonda thinks she did her homework, but she ain't seen nothin' yet.
Mary Jane has been thrust into this new world, and she loves it. But I cannot imagine her staying afloat without Kara by her side.
The last year has been terrible for Mj. She had an accident, was blackmailed, fought for Niecy's rights after a terrible run-in with the police and was ultimately fired.

These are challenging times for any filmmaker who doesn’t want to be told what to do. Chasing a slice of the Hollywood studio pie almost always brings compromise, and many foreign-born directors return to their home countries and assemble independent film and television projects.
That was the path of Dutch-born Paul Verhoeven, whose career began in his own language with “Soldier of Orange” and the Oscar-nominated “Turkish Delight.” From there he forged an A-list career that included “Basic Instinct” (which played competition in Cannes) “RoboCop,” “Total Recall,” “Starship Troopers,” and, yes, “Showgirls.” His last Hollywood movie was “Hollow Man” with Kevin Bacon in 2000.
When Verhoeven could no longer find material that suited him, he went back to Holland. His 2006 Dutch World War II drama “Black Book” (Sony Pictures Classics) starred Carice Van Houten, before she joined “Game of Thrones,” and was shortlisted for the foreign Oscar.

The last year has been great for Kitano Takeshi fans. While the director's recent output hasn't exactly set the world on fire outside of his two Outrage films, home video collectors have encountered a wealth of treasures as his early films have become available on Blu-ray for the first time in 2016. Most of these features came to us by way of UK specialist label Third Window Films, who've previous released Hana-bi, Kikujiro, Dolls, and A Scene at the Sea, and continue their winning record with Kids Return. However, now there's another label helping to fill in the gaps, Film Movement with their recent releases of Kitano's first two directorial features, Violent Cop and Boiling Point. Are they worth the upgrade? Check out our thoughts...

Saying goodbye can be so hard.
Rizzoli & Isles Season 7 Episode 13 mixed heartfelt video tributes with one last case. There were lots of tearful goodbyes as Jane, Maura and Vince all quit the police force to move onto new adventures.

“Being dead is not the same thing as not existing — many things exist that are dead. Indeed, I would argue that many of the greatest things that exist are dead and this is not necessarily a bad thing.” — James Schamus
In November of 2014, a little more than a year after he had been fired from his long-time job as the CEO of Focus Features, James Schamus was invited to the German Film Academy to give a speech about the future of cinema. Naturally, the underlying assumption of the event was that it had one.
The talk began on a routine note, as Schamus name-checked Theodor Adorno, bridged the gap between George Méliès and Christopher Nolan, and pushed through the obligatory references to the rise of Netflix and the fall of DVD. The last year has been a rather productive one for the detectives investigating the unsolved murder of Erik Cross, a 16-year-old boy who was found lying dead on the side of the road outside his home during the summer of 1983. A spokesman for the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office tells People investigators believe they are moving closer to solving the 33-year-old mystery. Within the past year, detectives have developed "key information" about how Cross died that seems to implicate a number of individuals, the spokesman reveals. "About a year ago, we got some real, key information we had never released and it hit dead center,...

Think back to your adolescence. When you and your friends bickered over what to do on a Friday night, one option probably always seemed universally appealing: going to the movies. As it turns out, you aren.t alone in that feeling. The last year experienced incredibly financially successful for the film industry, and much of that has to do with a serious boom in the teenage audience. The numbers are in, and they bode well for the future; 2015 experienced a major movie-going record as box office revenue yielded a staggering $38.3 billion. THR reports that during a recent CinemaCon panel, National Association of Theater Owners President-ceo John Fithian attributed the boom in ticket sales primarily to teenagers. Out of every major demographic, teenagers experienced the largest boom in overall ticket sales between 2014 and 2015. Although teenagers don.t consume other forms of conventional media (i.e. television) to the same degree as...

I’ve been a fan of Red Sonja for a long time, and I’ve been waiting to see the character get a new live action adaptation for years. Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in a Red Sonja film back in 1985, and there have been plans for a new film since 2008. At that time Robert Rodriguez was attached to develop it with Rose McGowan, then Simon West was going to take it on with Amber Heard in the lead role. The last year I heard, Christopher Cosmos (Game of Thrones) was hired to write a new script. There’s been no news on the project since.
Now Bleeding Cool is reporting some news from a “reliable source” that director Bryan Singer is currently developing an R-rated TV series adaptation that will bring the “She-Devil with a Sword” to life. This is one of those series that could potentially land on HBO,...

Warner Bros. and DC have already announced who will play all the Justice Leaguers in the DC Extended Universe, with one exception: Green Lantern. (Sorry, Shazam, you haven’t made the team cut yet.) The last year has seen plenty of rumors of who might become the next Emerald Knight, from Tyrese Gibson as John Stewart to Dan Amboyer as Hal Jordan, but the studio’s staying mum for now. Still, the ring-slinger has fans even in the acting community, and Lucifer star D.B. Woodside took an unorthodox approach to trying to get a Green Lantern audition. At last year’s Comic-Con International, D.B. Woodside wore a Green Lantern T-shirt to show off his love for the hero, but he also admitted to Comic Book Resources that he was trying to get the attention of some DC bigwigs. He said: Maybe I was wearing a ...

Over the last few years, Netflix has arguably done more to change the way we watch, talk, and think about television than anyone since HBO in the turn of the century days of "The Sopranos," "Sex and the City," and "Six Feet Under." Between their library of titles licensed from more traditional TV operations and their ever-growing stable of original series, Netflix has conditioned viewers to binge-watch shows, has encouraged its creators to design shows made explicitly for that model, and has pushed television in general into a more serialized direction, since the most lucrative afterlife for many shows lies in being sold to a streaming service rather than into traditional rerun syndication. During an appearance at the TCA press tour earlier this month, Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos said that the service would be offering over 600 hours of original content this year, and spending over $6 billion to...

For well over a decade, wrestling fans fantasized about the possibility of Sting joining WWE. It seemed implausible the longer he remained with Tna, but when he finally left the Nashville-based organization in early 2014, the chances of him signing with WWE grew to be much more likely.
After many months of false starts and rumors of his stalemate status with the company, he made his long awaited WWE debut at the 2014 Survivor Series pay-perv-view, helping Dolph Ziggler (temporarily) put The Authority out of power. When he came face-to-face with Triple H for the first time ever, it was as if time stood still; it was a sight die-hard wrestling enthusiasts never thought they would see.
The last year for The Icon in WWE, however, has been anything but smooth.

In their first public appearance since news of the Duggar family's molestation scandal broke exactly one month ago, Jill (Duggar) Dillard and Jessa (Duggar) Seewald, appeared at the Alive Christian Music Festival Saturday to talk faith, marriage and children.

"Hey we’re not a perfect family, we mess up," she told the crowd during a Q&A-style session on the festival's Beach stage. "Imagine what life is like with a family...

While it's clear that each new release from Pixar seems to spur people to offer a fresh assessment of the company's entire output, I'd rather not immediately try to figure out where "Inside Out" lands by comparison. It seems like a reductive way to approach this surprisingly sophisticated emotional experience. Co-directors Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen have told a very, very small-scale story when you look at what happens in the actual physical world. But in doing so, they've done something very powerful, because they have paid full respect to just how turbulent and important the inner life of a child can be. Ah, hell, who am I kidding? "Inside Out" works because we are all always wrestling with the particular balance required to keep us functioning. The film imagines five distinct beings that work in harmony (hopefully) inside each person: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. To be fair,...

The last year has been quite a rollercoaster ride for the Spider-Man movie property. After fans were expecting The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to deliver the first “real” Spider-Man movie since 2007’s Spider-Man 3 (flawed though that was), ASM2 suffered a decidedly mixed critical reception and brought in the lowest box office grosses of all five Spidey movies to date. This caused Sony to re-think their strategy towards the web-slinger’s movies, leading to the jaw-dropping announcement last month that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios would be teaming up to bring Spidey back to the screen, starting off with an appearance in Captain America: Civil War (likely in a post-credit scene) before he gets his own solo movie released on July 28, 2017.
Despite being one of cinema’s more accessible superheroes to date, Spidey hasn’t exactly had an easy time for the last 8 years or so. Spidey 3 was disappointing,...
