In some of the episodes, 3 animals play an important role on the plot. Those were the condor, the cougar and the snake (on this case, an anaconda). According to Incaic mythology, the condor was the guardian god of the Heavens, the cougar was the guardian of the Earth, and the snake was the protector of the Underworld.
Azteco's name is a clear reference to the Aztecs, the Empire that flourished in Central Mexico just before the arrival of the Spaniards in the 16th Century.
The animated series portrayed several famous landmarks in South America, which are really parts of the tour known as "The Path of the Inca"; e.g.: The city of Cuzco, Machu Picchu, Lake Guatavita, the Amazon River and Nazca among others.
The musical theme of the introduction is based on an Andean folk song titled "The Condor Passes". It was popularized by Simon & Garfunkel in 1970. Originally composed in 1913 by Peruvian music composer Daniel Alomia Robles.
It is possible that Pepero's hometown is located nearby the Andean frontiers of Chile, Peru and Bolivia (Pepero's clothes are similar to those of the 'huasos', Chilean cattle herders). And following his voyage through the Andean region, basically because of the description of the places they pass through, they are heading north along the mountain range.
