Netflix has added an impressive list of new films to their InstantWatch feature again this week. Quite a number of them are great titles from various Asian countries that I'm glad to see made accessible to Us viewers. Some of them are modern classics that need no introduction to cineastes, but others are pleasant surprises.
Tetsuo: The Iron Man
One of my favorite movies of all time, Tetsuo is Japanese cyberpunk at its most definitive. The first feature film by the great Shinya Tsukamoto, Tetsuo is the highly allegorical—and illogical—story of a businessman whose body slowly morphs into machine against his will, after he accidentally runs over a metal fetishist. Perverse, daring and brimming with energy, Tetsuo is one of the coolest things Japanese cult cinema has to offer.

Nippon Cinemas Kevin has found some (first?) just beautiful stills from Kenji Nakanishi’s Hana no Ato (After the Flowers). The film currently in post-production is based on a short story by Shuhei Fujisawa (The Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade, Love and Honor). Starring Keiko Kitagawa, Hana no Ato will open in Japanese theaters in Spring 2010.

Japanese beauty Kitagawa Keiko takes the lead role in an adaptation of the short story by the late Shuhei Fujisawa. Does that name sound familiar? It should as we have talked about his works a few times around here. You might know some other films that have been adapted from his other works. You know, Yoji Yamada’s superb Samurai Trilogy: The Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade, and Love and Honor. Yes. That Samurai Trilogy. Needless to say I don’t think there will be any question about the quality of the source material. This adaptation will be directed by Kenji Nakanishi.
Kitagawa plays Ito, a skilled swordswoman who is the daughter of a warrior. Ito falls in love with another member of her clan (Shuntaro Miyao), but after he commits suicide due to a plot by the clan’s leader (Kamejiro Ichikawa), she takes up her sword to exact revenge. »

“Ichi” has an interesting premise, being a reimagining of the enduringly popular Japanese tale of Zatoichi, the blind masseur and master swordsman, who was previously the subject of a long-running film and television series from the 1960s to 80s, and the 2003 blockbuster from Kitano Takeshi. Here, “Vexile” and “Ping Pong” director Sori Fumihiko adds a twist by recasting the protagonist as a young woman, played by gorgeous actress Ayase Haruka (recently in “Cyborg She”). The film boasts an impressive samurai pedigree thanks to the presence of fight choreographer Kuze Hiroshi, who worked on several Akira Kurosawa epics, including “Ran”, as well as Yamada Yoji’s masterpiece “The Twilight Samurai”. After having proved popular during its domestic release, the film now arrives on region 2 DVD via Manga Entertainment. The plot finds Ayase Haruka as the titular blind swordswoman wandering the countryside in search of the blind man who trained her as a child before disappearing, »
