A few years ago, Masashi Kishimoto and Yoshihiro Togashi sat down together for an interview, where they also answered some fan questions about their creative process and other aspects of Naruto and Hunter x Hunter. One fan question during the discussion prompted Togashi to compare Kishimoto to Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli.
Naruto and Sasuke in a still from Naruto
Miyazaki is one of the legends in the anime industry and is known primarily for his works like Spirited Away, The Boy and the Heron, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and many more. The creator has won two Academy Awards in the Best Animated Feature category for Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron.
During the interview, Kishimoto and Togashi were discussing their drawing skills when they were kids, and that’s when Togashi compared Kishimoto’s skills with Studio Ghibli’s director.

Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki is 83; because of this and his own past flirtations with retirement, some morbid critics are a bit too eager to look at how each new Miyazaki film would serve as his career capstone.
I'm going to keep such thoughts to a minimum, but Miyazaki's latest film, 2023's "The Boy and the Heron", couldn't have been made by anyone but a man aware he's aging. Set in Japan during World War II, the movie centers on young Mahito, who must reckon with the loss of his mother as he falls into a Lewis Carroll-style fantasy world held together by its elderly creator.
"The Boy and the Heron" won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars earlier this year (which it totally deserved). If you haven't seen it yet, don't fret. U.S. distributor GKids has announced the home media release date for the film — including a Blu-ray release date.

Guillermo Del Toro is among the most influential and acclaimed filmmakers in the entire entertainment industry. Recipient of several accolades including three Academy Awards, Del Toro has blessed the industry with several incredible films and features. And so while many of his contemporaries and juniors would hail him as a visionary, the director himself hails Hayao Miyazaki as the best director in animation.

The Cannes Film Festival will award legendary Japanese anime house Studio Ghibli with its honorary Palme d’Or this year, the first time Cannes has given its highest award to a company instead of an individual.
“For the first time in our history, it’s not a person but an institution that we have chosen to celebrate,” said Cannes Festival president Iris Knobloch and general delegate Thierry Frémaux, announcing the honor on Wednesday. They praised Ghibli’s animated features as filled with characters who “populate our imaginations with prolific, colorful universes and sensitive, engaging narrations. With Ghibli, Japanese animation stands as one of the great adventures of cinephilia, between tradition and modernity.”
Founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma, Studio Ghibli has in the past 40 years, “achieved what seemed to be an impossible feat: Independently producing pure masterpieces and conquering the mass market,” the festival said.

Studio Ghibli, the animation studio behind “My Neighbor Totoro” and the Oscar-winning animated feature “The Boy and the Heron,” is being awarded an Honorary Palme d’Or at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival. It marks the first time that the award will be given to a group.
The studio was co-founded by Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki in 1984 following the release of Miyazaki’s “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.”
“I am truly honored and delighted that the studio is awarded the Honorary Palme d’Or,” Suzuki said in a statement. “I would like to thank the Festival de Cannes from the bottom of my heart. Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning anime The Boy and the Heron floated to an easy second-weekend win at China’s theatrical box office, earning $12.8 million from Friday to Sunday, according to data from Artisan Gateway. The Studio Ghibli blockbuster has now earned $93.8 million in China, with local ticketing app Maoyan projecting that it will soon sail past the $100 million mark.
Miyazaki has previously suggested that The Boy and the Heron will be his last feature — but the 82-year-old anime legend has publicly retired twice before, only to eventually return to his drawing table. In any case, Studio Ghibli will continue to be a presence at China’s multiplexes. The fabled company has been steadily rereleasing Miyazaki’s back catalog over recent years. Next up is Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), scheduled for wide release in the country on April 30. Jack Ma’s Alibaba Pictures is also at work on creating an immersive Studio Ghibli exhibition in Shanghai.

Universal’s “The Fall Guy” will open in mainland Chinese cinemas next month, ahead of its debut in the U.S. and star Ryan Gosling’s native Canada.
The film is set to release officially in China on April 30. That puts it a few days behind the film’s first commercial outings on April 25 and 26 in Europe and other parts of Asia, but a week ahead of its May 3 release in North America.
Directed by David Leitch, the film co-stars Gosling and Emily Blunt, with Gosling playing a veteran stunt double for a self-obsessed movie star.
The film had its world premiere in SXSW earlier this month and received warm praise for its heart and Gosling’s return to a role with charm. Variety’s SXSW review of the picture called it “an epic stunt spectacular,” with Gosling back at his “charisma-radiating” best.

The renowned filmmaker and enthusiast has been absent at the awards for a second time. Miyazaki, known for his work with his production company Studio Ghibli, has not attended the Academy Awards twice this time, even after winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.

He is known for directing movies with subtlety and a plot that fills viewers with joy and anticipation. It had been more than two decades since Hayao Miyazaki won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, having first taken home gold with 2002’s Spirited Away. Until this year, he only saw just two more nominations, with Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises losing out to Wallace & Gromit and Elsa & Anna. But this past weekend, at 83, Miyazaki once again came out victorious, edging out the likes of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Pixar’s Elemental. While many of us cheered the achievement, there was one sourpuss who thought the movie he starred in was “robbed”.
Shameik Moore, who voiced Miles Morales / Spider-Man in Across the Spider-Verse, took to social media on the night of the Academy Awards to say that his movie was “*robbed”, prompting followers to call out the arrogance of the comment. As such, Moore addressed the response soon after, admitting he was bitter. “Respect to the winners.

Following its victory in the Best Animated Feature category at the 2024 Oscars, The Boy and the Heron will finally be landing on streaming. The movie is set to arrive on Max, the streaming service from HBO, later this year.
The Boy and the Heron was directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary co-founder of Japan’s Studio Ghibli. While the animation house has produced a number of projects over the last decade, this film was the first since 2013’s The Wind Rises to be directed by Miyazaki himself.
The English dub for the movie, advertised as the animation master’s final film, boasts an impressive number of A-list actors, including an impossible to identify Robert Pattinson, Florence Pugh (voicing both the younger and much older version of the same character), Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Mark Hamill, and Gemma Chan.

Howl's Moving Castle.I returned to the films of Hayao Miyazaki last year because the kids I nanny in Brooklyn—A, eight, and J, six—happened upon Studio Ghibli Fest while they were away over the summer in Upstate New York, visiting their grandparents in a town where they had spent the early pandemic. Of the two, J’s infatuation with Miyazki is least surprising: his interests include black holes, rare crystals, and mushrooms, especially the poisonous varieties. Through his eyes, I rediscovered Miyazaki, rewatching once-familiar films with a new attunement to their strangeness. In the process I was reminded of first meeting J, when he was four years old and still reeling from his family’s relocation from a house Upstate to their apartment in Brooklyn. He was particularly incensed about having to wear shoes, which I imagine crystallized the totality of the transformation: in that passage from grass to concrete,...

Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,” likely his final film, has won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
It’s Miyazaki’s second Oscar after the Japanese animation master won for “Spirited Away” in 2002. Miyazaki is the most nominated director in the Best Animated Feature category (tied with Pete Docter) with four nominations, including for “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “The Wind Rises.” Miyazaki is now also the oldest winner in the category ever, at 83, with the previous record holder being Mark Gustafson for “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.”
“The Boy and the Heron” beat out an impressive field that included Pixar entry “Elemental,” Neon’s “Robot Dreams,” Netflix’s “Nimona,” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the follow-up to the Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” from 2018.

Hayao Miyazaki's 2003 fantasy film "Spirited Away" is set largely in a bathhouse reserved for itinerant spirits and traveling minor deities. In the world of "Spirited Away," gods, sprites, and other magical beings from Japanese folklore accumulate a great deal of filth and weariness in their travels, and occasionally have to rest and wash up at a local spa. The spa is usually only visible to spirits, and is run by the tyrannical and terrifying Yubaba, a large-headed witch. Yubaba enslaves the young Chihiro, changes her name to Sen, and forces her to work in the spa. While there, Chihiro interacts with human-shaped co-workers, and serves a wide variety of magical beings she cannot fathom.
The creatures in "Spirited Away" are all wholly original creations, invented by Miyazaki specifically for the movie. It's a credit to the director and the other filmmakers that all of the deities on display feel ineffably old,...

Studio Ghibli, like Western counterparts Disney, Pixar and the UK’s Aardman, is one of the most important animation studios in movie history. Since its first feature film, “Castle in the Sky” in 1986, Studio Ghibli has delivered two dozen thought-provoking tales beautifully rendered in a unique brand of animation. To date, its output has racked up have a lucky seven Oscar bids for Best Animated Feature.
“Spirited Away” was the first Studio Ghibli movie to break into the Academy Awards conversation and did so with aplomb in 2003. It won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature (Miyazaki the recipient) over “Ice Age,” “Lilo & Stitch,” “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,” and “Treasure Planet.”
In 2006, Miyazaki was again nominated — this time for “Howl’s Moving Castle” alongside “Corpse Bride” and “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit,” with the latter movie, an Aardman creation, reigning victorious.

Middle East distributor Front Row Filmed Entertainment is gearing up to theatrically release iconic Oscar-nominated Rio de Janeiro gangland drama City of God across the Gulf countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for the first time.
Co-directed by Brazilian directors Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund, the movie made waves back in 2002 for its realistic depiction of the rise of gang violence in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro with a young unprofessional cast.
At the time, Dubai-based Front Row originally released the film straight to DVD in the Gulf due to a variety of local restrictions but some two decades later it has set a theatrical re-release in a sign of how the region is opening up.

After Hayao Miyazaki took three years to finish the initial storyboard for “The Boy and the Heron”, it became obvious that he needed help. With diminished stamina and failing eyesight, the legendary anime auteur was no longer able to control everything. So he invited Takeshi Honda (“Neon Genesis Evangelion”), the supervising animator on his hybrid CG/2D short “Boro the Caterpillar,” to join his upcoming feature.
Honda was flattered and told Miyazaki that he would think about it because he was already committed to “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time,” the franchise film finale. “But at that time, Miyazaki san said, ‘I don’t have time — there is no one in the Miyazaki family who is over 80 years old.’ I thought it was a big deal,” Honda told IndieWire over Zoom through an interpreter.

Studio Ghibli films take us on awe-inspiring journeys to other realms where cutesy animals and cozy vibes intersect with religion, environmentalism, and Japanese history. But this mix of child-like curiosity and mature contemplation doesn’t totally account for the studio’s sizable queer fanbase. And still, there’s something about Ghibli specifically that resonates with queer people, despite there being little obvious representation to speak of across the studio’s forty-year history.
On the face of it, much of this appeal can be chalked up to Ghibli’s fiercely strong female protagonists. Although the likes of Kaguya, Arrietty, and Nausicaä don’t actively identify as queer, gay audiences will happily follow them to hell and back. Like flying machines and delicious food porn, gay icons in this vein are woven throughout the studio’s tapestry, but only if you’re actively looking for them. English dubs for anime are a contentious thing. For many otakus, subbing out Japanese original audio for an English translation is defilement. Yet as anime has become more mainstream in America, the quality of dubs has shot up as well, and it's honestly not hard to find good ones these days (the English version of "Cowboy Bebop" is rightfully legendary).
Some of those quality dubs have been done for the films of anime's greatest genius: Hayao Miyazaki, founder of Studio Ghibli. When you're handling the work of a master, the incentive to do it right is all the more present. Not every single Ghibli picture is a Miyazaki joint, to be clear, but the director and studio remain pretty synonymous.

This is one of those weekend’s where you can see the effects of both the covid backlog and the strikes merging together to give us a relatively quiet weekend. We are in the second week of December and the biggest new release on the schedule is Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. Since the official word broke that Nintendo is pursuing a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, my head has been spinning with possibilities of what the film will look like. Hyrule is undoubtedly one of the most lush, intricate, and enigmatic kingdoms under Nintendo’s imaginative umbrella. When Maze Runner director Wes Ball approaches Link and Zelda’s world, he must pull out all the stops. Thankfully, it sounds like Ball is off to a great start. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Ball said he wants The Legend of Zelda to feel like a live-action Miyazaki film, which is music to my ears. Hayao Miyazaki is the legend who co-founded Studio Ghibli and is often called the “Godfather of Anime.” Imagine Link, Zelda, and Ganon inhabiting a world as fantasy-driven as Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro or Howl’s Moving Castle. The possibilities are endless.

Makoto Shinkai has been called the new Hayao Miyazaki from the moment he arrived on the scene -- and not entirely without reason. The filmmaker has made some of the most successful anime movies of all time, employing stunning visuals that bring tear-jerking stories to life. Like Miyazaki, Shinkai blends traditional Japanese folklore with modern stories to tell fantastical yet intimate coming-of-age stories.
Shinkai's latest, "Suzume," is a movie he's been slowly building his whole career up to. This serves as the end of his unofficial natural disaster trilogy that started with "Your Name," this time directly tackling the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in the plot. In "Suzume," we follow the titular character, a young woman living in a small town in Japan who is tasked with closing a series of magical turns across the country before it falls into another disaster. “The Boy and the Heron” marks the 14th collaboration between Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi. But even after almost four decades of working together, the animator and the composer are finding new ways to create new sounds. “The Boy and The Heron” is the story of Mahito (Soma Santoki), a young man who leaves the firebombing of Tokyo for the Japanese countryside in World War II, and then ends up guided by the titular Heron (Masaki Suda) to a completely different place in order to rescue his stepmother Natsuko (Yoshino Kimura) from the clutches of otherworldly forces. And also a lot of birds.

From Christian Bale as the title character in “Howl’s Moving Castle” to Tina Fey as the mom in “Ponyo,” Studio Ghibli movies tend to attract huge stars for their dubs.
