Australia’s fantasies about its past are a real problem, says the Indigenous director ahead of the world premiere of his new film, We Don’t Need A Map
Has the symbol of the Southern Cross become comparable to a swastika? That is the provocative question at the heart of Warwick Thornton’s new documentary We Don’t Need a Map.
The Indigenous, Alice Springs-born artist, best-known for directing 2009’s devastatingly brilliant Samson and Delilah, generated considerable controversy when he raised that prospect – expressing concern it was going to happen, rather than stating it had – seven years ago.

Warwick Thornton in 'We Don't Need A Map'..
Director Warwick Thornton decided to make his latest documentary We Don.t Need A Map.following backlash he received when he compared the Southern Cross to a swastika..
Then nominated for Australian of the Year, Thornton said in 2010: "Aboriginal people have used the Southern Cross for the last 40,000 years as a beacon guiding them to travel through country for survival, and I'm starting to see that star system symbol being used as a very racist nationalistic emblem - and that is seriously worrying me.
"We don't want to turn the Southern Cross into a swastika - that's bloody important..
Thornton told If that the reaction to those comments in the media afterwards frightened him.

Home: Some pets never have one to call their own. Weâ.d like to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary, adoptable pet every week. Today, meet Pebbles, a sweet girl rescued along with her canine pal this summer by the Southern Cross Animal Rescue (Scar) in Laurel, Mississippi.
In August, Scar received a call about two severely emaciated pit bulls living in a deep gully that the locals used as a dump site, according to Savannah Pipkins, vice president of the rescue.

As a fan of Japanese titles, I’ve been delighted by the amount Idea Factory have been bringing over to the West. A recent addition to the ranks is Compile Heart’s MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death, a dungeon-crawling Jrpg full of bright colors, cute magical girls and a rather familiar plot line.
When stars fade, the world stops turning, and its citizens are plunged into an unending night. As luck would have it, this exact problem has happened before, so the solution is already known. A bunch of magical girls (known as Machina Mages) just need to gather into the central city of Southern Cross, battle through hordes of demons with their Guardians, gain the blessings of the Goddess and wind the Planet Key. Simple.
While I was initially intrigued by MeiQ‘s plot, very little progression occurs after the opening. Other than short conversations between the characters, and the...

2015 was an impressive year for comics. Image continued to rise as the champion of indie titles, with its ever-expanding library of books by successful veterans and newcomers. Vertigo returned with a new line of comics containing dark, complex, character-driven genre stories that made them the most interesting American publisher back in the day. After years of being stuck making grim-dark, generic comics, DC decided to launch its #DCYou comics to breathe new life into its slowly decaying world: these were comics with characters/creators that were women, Lgbt, and Poc. Not only that, but they managed to come out with some of their best work in years like Batgirl, Midnighter, and Black Canary. As far as I’m concerned, Marvel doesn’t know what they’re doing, and I’m only reading Ms. Marvel right now as everything else is either too expensive or generic looking. Oh, well. At least Ant-Man was a good movie.

Frank Castle is coming back to the Marvel Universe and it seems he is going to be more grounded. The last time we saw The Punisher it seemed as his days were numbered as judge, jury, and executioner. Marvel will be bringing this version of Frank Castle as a more realistic version. With Jon Bernthal bringing Frank Castle to life in season 2 of Daredevil this comic will be a hot commodity. Marvel has chosen wisely with Becky Cloonan and Steve Dillon putting this series together.
The one man war on crime is reforged, reloaded and re-energized in 2016! Frank Castle is back to terrorize the underworld of the Marvel Universe once more in The Punisher #1! From rising star writer Becky Cloonan (Gotham Academy, Southern Cross) and legendary Punisher artist Steve Dillon comes a new beginning for Frank, and an ending for anyone who stands in his way.

Malcom Turnbull.s ascension to Prime Minister makes long-awaited media reforms more likely, even without a consensus among the major players, according to one analyst.
Credit Suisse believes a a reduction in the commercial broadcasters. licence fees and the abolition of the rule preventing any media proprietor from reaching more than 75 per cent of the population have bipartisan support and won.t require complex negotiations with the Senate.
Removing the reach restriction would trigger a wave of mergers between the metropolitan networks and regional affiliates, with Nine Entertainment best positioned to merge with either Southern Cross or Win Corp.
Alternatively the broker sees a Southern Cross/Ten Network merger as a possibility, which could prompt Seven West Media to buy Prime TV.

This is my overview of the Image Comics Spotlight panel. I get there a few minutes early to make sure I can hear everything and have a good line of sight to take pictures for potential announcements. While I wait for the panel to start, I look around the open ended theater to check the turnout for the panel. The first few rows are filled to capacity already, and people try and find seats where they can. The panel begins and our panelists for the day are Adam McGovern (Nightworld writer), Becky Cloonan (Southern Cross writer), Brandon Graham (8House: Arclight writer), Valentine De Landro (Bitch Planet artist), and Alex de Campi (No Mercy writer).
Each panelist goes through the books I named above and tells us a few short points about why we should be reading these books.

As the Robotech film moves ahead, we look at the anime's history, knotty rights issues, cultural impact, and earlier failed film attempts.
"In the year 1999, high above Macross island in the South Pacific, a phenomenal event occurred in the skies which altered the cause of human history..."
With a blaze of animated light, a huge alien space craft bursts through Earth's atmosphere and collides with a city, reducing its buildings to atoms in an instant.
That dramatic opening heralded the arrival of Robotech - and American television had never seen anything quite like it. Here was animated show which told a sprawling saga set across multiple epochs, full of alien invaders and exotic transforming robots. Its characters seemed low-key and somehow real; there were brave pilots, nervy new-recruits, romances and love triangles. There was action, but also comedy, tragedy and pathos. It even provided a generous helping of bubblegum pop music.

Sony Pictures has secured the live-action film rights to the popular anime series "Robotech" which they plan to turn into a potential franchise.
The original 1985 show was actually a combination of three different Japanese television shows - footage from "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross," "Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross," and "Genesis Climber Mospeada" was cobbled together and redubbed to create an original 85-episode animated series that could be syndicated across U.S. markets.
As a result, a lot of rewriting and editing had to be done to stitch together three unrelated series to portray it as one cohesive storyline that spans three generations. To this day, the first season (based on the 'Macross' series) remains the most well-regarded.
Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton ("300," "Immortals") are producing and Michael Gordon ("300," "GI Joe") is writing the script. Various people have tried to adapt the series into a film over the past decade including Tobey Maguire,...

From Marine Boy and Thundercats to Cities Of Gold and Akira, we look at the TV shows and movies that introduced the UK to Japanese anime
One evening in 1994, the BBC screened a documentary simply called Manga. Presented by Jonathan Ross, it showcased the rising popularity of Japanese animation, largely focusing on the output of Manga Entertainment, whose dubbed VHS releases had made a huge impact on anime fans and caused a certain amount of consternation among the mainstream press.
For British viewers, the anime boom took a long time to arrive. In America, Japanese shows like Kimba The White Lion, Gigantor and Astro Boy were a common sight on television in the 1960s, yet it took until the late 70s and 80s, and a string of European-Japanese co-productions, before anime finally began to find a hold on UK television.

Writer: Brandon Seifert
Artist: Menton3
Publisher: Idw Entertainment
Price: $4
Description: Years ago, a scientist had a horrific accident when he tried to use his newly invented teleportation device and became a human/fly hybrid. Now his almost-human son continues to search for a cure for the mutated genes. But a breakthrough turns into a breakout, and anyone exposed risks turning into a monster as well…
Our Take: Writer Brandon Seifert did well with his Witch Doctor comic but his most recent title, The Harvester, hasn’t fared as well. I have to add that I read an interview with Seifert recently in which he admitted that he didn’t handle gore well. I’m definitely taken aback by this. The guy seems to be catering almost exclusively to the horror fandom, yet he hadn’t even seen Either of The Fly movies before working on this comic?...

A has-been novelist by the name of Croger Babb is in search of a story on the Regime but has failed to grasp the right audience. However, a chance encounter lands him with what could be the story of a life time: the journal of Maia Reveron, the untold cousin of former dictator Arthur McBride and with her the untold story of the Malory Regime.
It seems one thing that Image has been putting out as of late are comics that do the difficult-to-pull-off dual narrative.

I have such a mixed relationship with sci-fi horror. I didn’t grow up with the beloved cultural touchstones of the genre (Alien, The Thing, The Fly) so my perception of it in pop culture, for the longest time, belonged to the world of B-movies and Silver Age horror comics featuring radioactive animals and things from space. By the time I did discover that two worlds I was so fervently passionate about could work together to amplify each other, I had plumbed the depths of both and consequently had the bar raised much higher. Not that the aforementioned properties didn’t pass muster but the less said about the turds that have followed since then, the better. As actual space-bound horror goes, the only one of recent note is Sunshine. Southern Cross is,...

Description: There are thousands of Hells, each unique, each terrible. Mega-cities ruled by vicious gangs. Empires where the most perverse are well-respected. Wastelands roamed by prehistoric monstrosities. With the proper tools and know-how… you can infiltrate Hell whether you’re dead or not. With the proper tools and know-how, you can break out. Project Kerberos has developed this forbidden technology, and a special forces extraction team is dispatched to rescue lost souls from the infernal realm.
Our Take: Cullen Bunn is the very definition of prolific. He writes tons of comics on a monthly basis, with any publisher who’ll have him, in nearly every genre imaginable. But he does seem to favor a mix of horror and action more than anything, which is Hellbreak‘s formula as well. That said, it’s also...

"300" and "G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra" scribe Michael Gordon has come onboard the live-action film adaptation of the classic anime series "Robotech".
Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton are set to produce the project and are already said to be considering filmmaker Andy Muschietti ("Mama") as the project's potential director.

According to the information included in the kickstarter campaign, Robotech Academy will focus on the children of the characters from the original Robotech anime, set in the Robotech Sentinels world. Check out the video below and Click Here if you wish to contribute. The project currently has a goal of $500,000 Usd and has so far, collected $63.9k Usd. Topics of the conversation include religious and water imagery in Hannibal, location and the inevitable mayoral race that Hannibal will take part in with the help of Jonathan Tucker. Earlier this year Mel Greig and Michael Christian called the hospital where Kate Middleton was giving birth and managed to convince a nurse to give them confidential medical information.
In the aftermath of the prank, nurse Jacintha Saldanha ended up committing suicide, which led to a complicated situation for both Greig and Christian.
And now, Mel has announced she has resigned from her job at 2Day FM and will drop her lawsuit against the employer for “failing to maintain a safe workplace.”
At the time, 2Day FM parent company Southern Cross Austereo decided to air the prank call in its entirety despite requests by Greig to edit some of the content, leading to death threats against Mel and her team.
A spokesperson told press, "Prior to the call being broadcast she made suggestions for changes to be made to the recording of the call. 2Day FM decided that the call should be broadcast without alteration.

An Australian DJ involved in the tragic phone prank that led to the suicide of a nurse attending to Kate Middleton has once again stirred up controversy after he was given an award by his radio station. Per Reuters, Michael Christian—who, along with cohost Mel Greig, pranked nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who was later found dead—has been awarded the "top jock" prize by the radio network he works for, Southern Cross Austereo. Rockaway Beach, a Queens neighborhood hit hard by Hurricane Sandy in October, is still rough around the edges. Five months later, houses near the water look abandoned, and the boardwalk is still in shambles. But weary residents received some great news on Friday, when they arrived at MoMa PS1's Vw Dome 2 next to the beach to see what was promoted as "a special performance": Patti Smith was the star of the show.
Andrea Gidder and Steve Fox, two Rockaway residents who have been living in the area since 1980, spoke to HuffPost about the large number of artists and curators who have recently moved to the area. "The community that's moved in here for the Renaissance of Rockaway has been terrific," Gidder said. "They didn't abandon us." Fox shrugged, saying, "They should've charged something and given it to the Rockaway recovery, but whatever!"

Rupert Murdoch Ally At Odds With Forbes’ Billionaires List Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, an ally of Rupert Murdoch whose Kingdom Holding Company shares business interests with News Corp., is in dispute with Forbes over his placement on its annual billionaires list. The magazine placed him at number 26 on its list with an estimated worth of $20B. But the prince’s office thinks that’s several billion too low. According to The Financial Times, the prince severed ties on Monday with the list, citing a “flawed” valuation method. Forbes responded that it “has been investigating the prince’s finances for several years, and will detail its findings in a feature story in the magazine” that will appear online. Kingdom Holding will continue to collaborate with the Bloomberg Billionaires index, however, which measures the prince’s wealth at $28B, which he considers more accurate. Among his holdings, the Saudi investor owns about 7% of News Corp.

Royal prank radio presenter Michael Christian quietly went back on air this morning.
