Ever since his father's suicide, Edward Wilson wants to do good to the world. But he makes it into a habit to take one decision after another that makes his life an unhappy one.

Edward has a naturally reticent and secretive nature, although he occasionally shows flashes of a more creative, artistic soul. At Yale he dabbles in Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and poetry, but it's his initiation into the secret Skull & Bones society -- the WASP training ground for future leaders -- that all but seals his entry into the world of espionage.

In the Second World War he becomes a member of the OSS, an Intelligence Service operating in London. When the Cold War begins the USA transform the OSS in the CIA for which Edward Wilson gives his services. As the Bay of Pigs debacle unfolds, Wilson, now head of CIA counterintelligence, begins searching for a mole in the organization who tipped off the Cubans to the clandestine invasion. In the course of searching for a traitor, Wilson looks back over the betrayals of his own life, from abandoning his true love for a shotgun wedding with his friend's sister, whom he impregnated, to the murder of his mentor and finally, the assassination of his own son's fiancee', a double agent.
