And In More Vampire News: Daybreakers Poster

15 October 2009 12:25 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

With all the fangs flying round FilmShaft towers at the moment I almost forgot about this particular film. I know, shame on me! Anyhow, a brand new poster has been released for Michael Spierig & Peter Spierig’s Daybreakers, starring Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawke, Isabel Lucas and Sam Neil. As vampire films go, this one certainly has an interesting take:

In the near future, most of the human race have been infected by a mysterious desiese which in turn has transformed the world into a civilisation of vampires. The remaining human population are held to harvest blood supply, and world leaders have been completely seduced by the power this new virus has given them. In a world where society is happy to flirt with the dark side, a group of renegade scientists find a cure for the vampiric desiese which has held the world captive for so long. But in a world of immortality, »

Lionsgate just sent along the latest one-sheet for its upcoming futuristic vampire thriller Daybreakers—one that definitely emphasizes the futuristic vibe over the vampire element. It’s a pretty nifty piece of art, though; check out the poster below.

Exclusive Interview with The Spierig Brothers Daybreakers

10 October 2009 5:10 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

One of the many films that premiered at this year’s Toronto Film Festival was The Spierig BrothersDaybreakers”. The film stars Ethan Hawke as a brilliant vampire hematologist (blood expert) and he lives in a world where most humans have been turned into vampires due to a plague. Unfortunately, with a vampire society so large, they’ve killed most of the remaining humans and they’re relying on Hawke to provide a blood substitute. The film also stars Sam Neill, Isabel Lucas, and Willem Dafoe.

While I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, I was surprised by how much I liked the movie. It’s a high concept film that also plays as a vampire movie. I think audiences are going to like it when Lionsgate releases it this January. Anyway, while at the festival, I got to interview The Spierig Brothers and you can read our conversation after the jump. »

Peter and Michael Spierig Daybreakers Q&A

9 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Michael Spierig has a shocking confession to make. "When we made Daybreakers , I had never even heard of Twilight ," says Michael, who directed the upcoming vampire saga with brother Peter. "Our lead character's name is Edward, and I started seeing these Edward the Vampire T-shirts. I'm like, .Do they already know about our film? What the hell's going on?' And I'm told there's this other thing called Twilight . And I go, "What the hell's Twilight?'" The Spierigs - the Australia brothers who first caught our attention with 2003's micro-budgeted zombie saga Undead - now know all too well about the girl-friendly Twilight saga. But they're not worried the sequel New Moon will take a bite out of the ultra-violent Daybreakers 's business when it... »

Fantastic Fest 09: Review of Daybreakers

Review by: rochefort

Rating: 4 out of 10

In "Daybreakers", the latest film by the Spierig Brothers, the year is 2019 and vampires rule the earth. It's ten years after a single bat bite triggered a viral epidemic that transformed the bulk of the human race into undead bloodsuckers, and society has altered accordingly. The streets are mostly empty during the day, blood is the chief economic good, and the purity of your plasma is directly proportionate to how much money you make. Ed (Ethan Hawke) is a vampire hematologist who has spent every year since the transformation trying to synthesize a plasma substitute; he's hoping to give vampire-kind an alternative to blood-farming the few remaining humans left on the planet. After a chance encounter with a group of human resistance fighters that include ex-vampire Willem Dafoe, Ed »

Fantastic Fest Daily Dispatch #8: Closing Night Chaos Reigns!

2 October 2009 1:42 PM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

It's over. I can't believe it's over. Chaos Reigned.  I was ready for it to be over; eight days of films and fun, nearly nonstop, it can't go on forever, and the party has to end. But it ended on several high notes.

I had a brief interview with the Spierig brothers, who brought Daybreakers in for the Closing Night film, although it's not getting released until January.  Despite my forgetting my notebook and being dead-tired, the highlight was their response to my saying "How can you forget someone who pulls a gun out of their ass?!" Having seen Undead, and loving it, it's hard to forget Mungo McKay

I ended up walking out of Dirty Mind, not because the film is bad, but because I was tired, and not in the mood for white-on-light subtitles.  Bad subtitles is a pet peeve of mine, especially having seen amazing ones in »

Exclusive: Michael and Peter Spierig talk Daybreakers

25 September 2009 3:04 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Daybreakers (which opens in North America on January 8th, 2010 - read our advance review here) is the newest film from Michael and Peter Spierig, creators of the cult hit zombie film Undead. After a successful screening at the Toronto International Film Festival the two were happy to talk about how their new and original vampire tale took shape.

“We were interested in doing a vampire movie that subverted and did something different with popular culture and the vampire myth. We worked on the script for over two years and really tried to twist everything in a different direction,” Peter states. In this film, vampires have literally taken over the cities of the world. Yet, the only immediately obvious change is that the “nine to five” workday instead starts at sunset and ends at sunrise. With the human population almost non-existent, Ethan Hawke’s vampire/haematologist Edward Dalton hopes to create »

Tiff ‘09: Daybreakers

24 September 2009 8:19 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Daybreakers Directed by Michael Spierig & Peter Spierig In 2003 the twin Australian filmmakers, The Spierig Brothers, unleashed the no-budget, frenetic, zombie opus titled Undead onto the world. Now after a six year hiatus, they have finally returned with the world premiere of their new movie Daybreakers, at Tiff's Midnight Madness. Daybreakers tackles the vampire genre with all of the energy and enthusiasm shown in Undead, but now with a bigger budget, a more revered cast, and a better script. The vampire film has become almost as tired as the zombie film, but with even greater presence in the mainstream. It's saturated with things like Twilight and True Blood, taking the terrifying Draculas and Nosferatus, and transforming them into pop icons like Edward Cullen. Now the Spierig bothers are breathing some new life into the vampire genre with their extremely inventive second feature. In this world, power has shifted into the hands of the vampires, »

Tiff '09 Interview: 'Daybreakers' Directors Peter and Michael Spierig

24 September 2009 2:55 PM, PDT | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Its hard to believe its been six years since directors, Michael and Peter Spierig came out with their debut, Undead. It contained an ambitious epic scale and impressive visual effects which were created by the brothers themselves on their home computers. On their upcoming second feature, Daybreakers, the Spierig brothers now have studio backing (Lionsgate) and reputable names such as Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill. Youd think with all this behind their sophomore film that they might have watered down their vision for Hollywood. One couldnt be more wrong. The brothers have created a truly audacious, imaginative horror/sci-fi hybrid that is everything the Underworld franchise tries to be but in less than two hours. We chatted with the directors about their efforts to bring this long in the making effort to the big screen. »

Excl: The Spierig Bros. on Daybreakers !

Back in 2002, the Spierig brothers brought the beloved zombie movie Undead to the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness gala. This year they are back with their take on the vampire genre. Brothers Michael and Peter Spierig have once again created an original take on a timely monster that is sure to have genre fans excited and happy since they most certainly do it justice. This time with a bigger budget and bigger stars, the likes of Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill and Willem Dafoe join the brothers in Daybreakers a vampire film where the vampires are the civilians and the humans are the minority.   The day after the successful premiere of the film at Tiff, I had a chance to chat to the very exhausted Michael and Peter about who came up with the idea first, a... »

Tiff '09 Review: 'Daybreakers'

14 September 2009 3:40 PM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

It's a lazy technique ... but it also works. I'm talking about the "movie X meets movie Y" style of cinematic analysis, and it's how I plan to open my review of Michael and Peter Spierig's Daybreakers: "It's Gattaca meets Near Dark ... sorta." If I were one of those genre-lovin' Australian Spierig boys, I'd choose to take that as a compliment. And as the guy who just wrote those words, I'd say "Yup, that's how it was meant." Horror nuts who attend film festivals and / or bother to look past the studio releases on the horror shelves will no doubt remember Undead, a scrappy and exceedingly raucous horror / sci-fi combo that the Spierig brothers offered a few years back.... »

Tiff Review: Daybreakers

Daybreakers Written & directed by Peter and Michael Spierig Starring: Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill, Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan, and Isabel Lucas Twin brothers Michael and Peter Spierig screened the last ever film at the glorious Uptown theatres on Yonge St. back in 2003.  It was their debut film Undead. They started with zombies and now, with Daybreakers, they've moved on to blood sucking vampires.  Believe me when I say that there are no romantic, gothic, emo vampire heartthrobs in this movie.  This is not Twilight. The year is 2017 and a plague that started with just one bat has transformed the majority of the Earth's populace into vampires.   These vampires are reminiscent of powerful overlords who rule the Earth's economy and everything surrounding it with a 'we shall rule the world' attitude.  The main problem is that the human race is dying out and human blood is becoming more and more scarce and »

Daybreakers (Film Review)

2 September 2009 11:22 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Life’s a bitch, and then you don’t die,” so says Bromley Marks Pharmaceutical’s hematologist Edward Dalton (Ethan Hawke) after a long night of work developing a new blood substitute. If this sounds off the beaten path for a typical horror movie, you’d be right. Especially considering that our hero Dalton, his co-workers and the rest of the public are, as suggested by the previous quip, vampires. Vampires that have literally engulfed the world, leaving the last remaining humans in hiding for fear of being captured and their remaining pure blood harvested.

That may be the set up to Daybreakers, co-director’s Michael and Peter Spierig follow-up to the 2004 cult zombie flick Undead, but it’s only the beginning of this elaborate yarn. In an even more unique twist, the worst of the starving vampires are rapidly devolving into ferocious, flesh-winged, bat-like “Subsiders”, terrorizing the otherwise well-adjusted population of undead. »

Warner Bros. Remaking ‘Captain Blood’…In Space

3 August 2009 1:37 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I’m going to throw out the name of a movie that most of our readers have never heard of, much less seen - Captain Blood. It isn’t some indie flick or a PETA documentary on the killing of whales. No, the reason you probably haven’t heard of it is because unless you were a teenager in the 1930’s (which would put you in the late 80’s or early 90’s age range), went to film school or just really love old black and white movies, in all likelihood you’ve never come across the Warner Bros. classic film.

It looks like all that might change soon though as Warner Bros. studios have chosen brothers Michael and Peter Spierig to direct a remake of Captain Blood based on a  John Brownlow script. After producer Bill Gerber (Gran Torino) and Warner Bros hired Brownlow to do a first draft of Captain Blood, »
