Sex & Nudity

  • None, but there's a huge amount of reference to sexual abuse more than anything. Main character Liz says more than once that her grandfather abused her mother and aunt, then her best friend reveals that her own father raped her in fairly graphic terms.

Violence & Gore

  • A brief physical fight scene in the very beginning involving two young girls trying to keep drug money from their mother.
  • A girl dumps hot soup on another girl.
  • A girl pours bleach into a another girl's shampoo while she is showering. The girl unknowingly uses the shampoo and starts screaming.
  • Three girls beat up another.

Profanity

  • Mild swearing: damn, friggin, bitch

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The main character's mother is a drug addict.
  • Some drinking and smoking, and a fair amount of drug use and references. We see a woman in bad shape after being drunk and dying from AIDS due to careless use of needles for drugs.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A lot of emotional and intense scenes involving the rough lives of Liz Murray and her friends and relatives. She is also shown lying on her mother's coffin before it's buried. The movie has an uplifting ending, but is still intense and basically on a PG-13 level.
