Film Weekly: Romola Garai and The Twilight Saga: New Moon

19 November 2009 4:37 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This week Film Weekly goes from Britain on the eve of the second world war with Stephen Poliakoff's Glorious 39, to the American midwest in the 60s with the Coen brothers' A Serious Man, to the fangtastical environs of contemporary Washington state in The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

First up, Jason Solomons meets rising star Romola Garai, who adds to an impressive CV (Atonement, Angel, Vanity Fair) by appearing in almost every scene in Glorious 39, a conspiracy thriller based on true events in Chamberlain's government. She tells Jason how the film plays with the nature of the truth and why it's the "twisted sister" to her breakthrough film I Capture the Castle, plus how she can never live down Dirty Dancing 2.

Xan Brooks then joins Jason to review the week's key releases: the Coen brothers' fascinating, brilliantly acted A Serious Man, Matt Damon in Steven Soderbergh's "too clever" The Informant! …

Rachel McAdams to Play Black Cat in Spider-Man 4?

10 November 2009 7:33 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Looks like the reports about Spider-Man 4 having just one villain [1] may not have been entirely accurate. According to Mania [2], casting for the film is now underway, and producers are looking to introduce at least two additional major characters: one male and one female. The female role is believed to be Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat aka Spider-man's version of Catwoman (I know, I know... Black Cat actually came first). While this role may or may not be considered a "villain" per se, the male role is being described as such. So who is under consideration to play these new roles? Well, right now there are two possibilities being talked about for the role of Felicia Hardy. The first, and most well-known, is Rachel McAdams. While she hasn't done much in the way of action before, it appears that she has probably been involved in more than a few stunts …

New Female Lead Confirmed For Spider-Man 4, Romola Garai Auditioned… But Is It Black Cat?

9 November 2009 6:46 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Earlier today a rumor broke that Rachel McAdams is in talks to join Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 as the anti-hero/love conflict Black Cat. We didn't know if this was true, or just another one of the countless internet superhero rumors. I still can't confirm the validity of the story, but a /Film reader named Ambrose H forwarded me a link that at least confirms two parts of the story: Sam Raimi and Co are already casting the feature They are looking for a new female lead Not only that, but Romola Garai has auditioned for the role. Garai is a 27-year-old British actress who starred in Amazing Grace, The Other Man and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. In the latst issue of The Observer, Garai shared the details about what she was up to last week, which included a video audition for the latest Spidey: Love is at the …

January Jones Jumps With Nicolas Cage

28 October 2009 5:03 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Just last week January Jones revealed that, while they were dating, Ashton Kutcher told her he didn’t think she’d be any good at the acting biz, and that she should call it quits.

Well, Jones certainly wasn’t deterred by the lack of support from Kutcher. Already having cemented her place as a TV starlet with her role on Mad Men, Jones is ready to take on the big screen.

Before making a name for herself with Mad Men, Jones had supporting roles in numerous movies including Love Actually, American Wedding, and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. Jones has moved past being a supporting actress, signing on for starring roles in two films in the past week.

Last week Jones signed on for Dark Castle’s Unknown White Male with Liam Neeson and Diane Kruger, and it has now been revealed that she will also be starring with Nicolas Cage in Hungry Rabbit Jumps, …

He's Like the Wind: 10 notable Patrick Swayze dance moves

15 September 2009 5:48 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I spent the better part of the afternoon watching Patrick Swayze, a fine specimen who looked like a hotter version of the Brawny man and moved like a better version of the Rum Tum Tugger, a curious cat, dance on the Internet. It was sad (and briefly compounded by a brief wave of severe self-loathing for never having seen Skatetown U.S.A.), but this "exercise," and Sunkist Fruit Gems, really made today much better. Let's look at it this way: As long as nothing happens to the Internet, we will always be able to sit at work and watch Patrick Swayze dance. All day. Let's kick it. Dirty Dancing (1987) (airing on ABC Family Saturday and Sunday nights!) I mean, pick any move. The Lift is obvious, of course. My esteemed colleague Tim Stack is a big fan of Johnny's intricate arm work -- specifically The Snake hand swirl and subsequent Come Hither finger wag. …

Patrick Swayze Dies

14 September 2009 9:15 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Patrick Swayze, best remembered for playing big-screen hunks, died of pancreatic cancer on September 14, 2009. He was 57.

After starting his professional career as a dancer for Disney on Parade, Swayze starred in 'Grease' on Broadway. He subsequently made appearances on television roles, and became noticed after being cast in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders, in which he played the older brother of C. Thomas Howell and Rob Lowe. Swayze would re-team with Howell in the 1984 cult hit Red Dawn, and with Lowe in the hockey drama Youngblood, two films that cemented his rising star status.

But the role that catapulted Swayze to stardom was dance instructor Johnny Castle in 1987’s Dirty Dancing. The film was intended to show in theaters for one weekend, then go straight to video; however, it became a massive hit. Swayze’s follow-up vehicles were mostly flops, although the action film Road House had its dedicated admirers. …

Patrick Swayze Dies at 57 of Pancreatic Cancer, Defies Odds in 1.5-Year Public Battle

14 September 2009 8:29 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – “Dirty Dancing,” “Ghost,” film, TV and dance icon Patrick Swayze died on Sept. 14, 2009 at 57 after a 1.5-year public battle with pancreatic cancer. He was in his Los Angeles home beside friends and family.

The legendary actor made no secret of his condition, wrote a memoir with his wife since he was diagnosed in Jan. 2008 and braved through filming of the TV crime drama “The Beast” while refusing to ingest painkillers so as not to derail his performance. He was noticeably thinner on “The Beast” and shooting was difficult on Swayze physically, but he persisted with his craft nonetheless.

Actor Patrick Swayze Dies at 57

14 September 2009 5:45 PM, PDT | IMDb News

Actor Patrick Swayze, who attained heartthrob status in the movies Dirty Dancing and Ghost, died Monday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer; he was 57. The star revealed in March of 2008 that he was suffering from the deadly form of cancer, but continued working on the A&E series The Beast, and remained optimistic in interviews and on the set during his treatment.

Swayze shot to fame in the early '80s as part of the destined-for-fame ensemble in the 1983 drama The Outsiders, and also appeared in the action drama Red Dawn before taking on one of the lead roles in the popular miniseries North and South. He hit his zenith of fame in the late '80s and early '90s with the smash hit Dirty Dancing (1987), the cult fave Road House (1989), and the Oscar-winner Ghost (1990), opposite Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg, where his pottery-making scene with Moore became one of cinema's most iconic romantic scenes.

His films in the '90s included another cult favorite, Point Break, as well as the drama City of Joy, the cross-dressing comedy To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar, and the indie hit Donnie Darko. He reprised his Dirty Dancing role in the quasi-remake Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. In addition to his role in The Beast, Swayze most recently appeared in the drama Powder Blue and British comedy Keeping Mum.

A remake to "Dirty Dancing" tries to two-step into theaters

21 August 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Oh no, they’re putting baby in the corner? Whether our cha-cha shoes like it or not, a Dirty Dancing remake is apparently in the works.

Look, no one loves the tale of forbidden love in the Catskills more than I do, but this idea does not sound like the time of my life. I don’t know whether to laugh or grimace; neither do Baby and Johnny.

Hot on the dancing heels of the planned Footloose remake comes this other recycling of 1980s movie nostalgia. I know there are no new ideas, but this is getting ridiculous. The original 1987 film became a sleeper hit that made stars out of its previously unknown stars, Patrick Swayze (who played rebel dance instructor Johnny Castle) and Jennifer Grey (who played sheltered debutante Frances “Baby” Houseman).

While there are very few details about the remake, it is being developed from a script by Julia Dahl, …

Dirty Dancing Remake – Baby’s Back!

20 August 2009 9:56 PM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Dirty Dancing is back….because no-one puts baby in the corner.

For everyone who loves a good chick flick – it surely doesn’t get any better than this! Rumours are circulating that there is set to be a remake of the 1987 hit film Dirty Dancing.

Uptown Girls writer Julia Dahl has apparently been hired to create a brand new script for the movie. The original, of course, famously starred Patrick Swayze as a dance instructor called Johnny who romanced Jennifer Grey’s teen character called Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman.

The movie was a huge hit on release, earning $213.95 million at the worldwide box office. A sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, was then released in 2004.

The possibility of a remake opens up many questions. Will it ever be as a good as the first version, or even worse a flop like the 2004 sequel turned out to be? On the other hand, Dirty Dancing

Dirty Dancing Remake in Development

20 August 2009 5:13 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Lionsgate studios has recently reached into the Hollywood remake bag and pulled out…Dirty Dancing! That’s right; the studio elites are at it again with their latest announcement to develop a script by Julia Dahl (Uptown Girl) into a living, breathing Dirty Dancing remake of the classic 80’s dance film.

A director has yet to be announced but, as sure as I am pudgy, they will pick some hip music/dance film director like Anne Fletcher (Step Up), Thomas Carter (Save the Last Dance) or Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard). All of whom would be fine choices.

This is not the first dancing remake penciled onto the calendar though. Kevin Bacon’s signature dance flick, Footloose, has been in development for months now. I can’t say that I blame Lionsgate for giving Dirty Dancing a remake though. The movie was made for $6 million in 1987 and BoxOfficeMojo has it …

Wanting More Dirty Dancing

19 August 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Lionsgate is keeping on top of their game within these past couple of days. From making their mark with domestically distributing the comic book adaptation Kick Ass, now they’re doing one more with yet another remake. At this point, with the huge array of eighties movies that have been thrown on the remake slab (including the likes of Red Dawn) who is really surprised, and the latest casualty is Dirty Dancing.

A movie that for the most part not only has associated itself forever with Patrick Swayze, the line “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” and the never ending song ‘The Time Of My Life’ is getting a more modern take. The story originally circles around Frances (’Baby’) who spends the summer in a camp with her family who ends up falling in love with the camp’s dancing teacher Johnny. Lionsgate Remaking ‘Dirty Dancing’

19 August 2009 3:50 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Lionsgate is developing a remake of 1987’s Dirty Dancing with writer Julia Dahl (Uptown Girls).  There aren’t many details yet as this wasn’t an official studio announcement, but rather a Tweet from Production Weekly.

The original was made on a budget of $6 million and earned $214 million worldwide.  Lionsgate attempted a sequel of sorts in 2004 with Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, but it was a bomb barely making back its production costs overseas.  However, a stage version of the classic did well.

In similar 80’s boogie news, Paramount is working on a Footloose remake.

Meanwhile Patrick Swayze, one of the original dirty dancers, is still winning the battle with the extremely deadly pancreatic cancer.  He recently underwent a new round of chemotherapy between working on his new TV show “The Beast.”  Swayze celebrated his 57th birthday yesterday.
