The town of Tembisa was enthusiastic about filming the Apartheid rally scene. 1,300 extras were recruited for the riot scene, and many additional locals joined in on the day, rushing in while the cameras were rolling.
The filmmakers got to talk to Allan Heyl, one of Andre Stander's accomplices who was paroled on May 18, 2005; Cor van Deventer, his police partner; and the warden of the prison where Andre was incarcerated.
The riot scenes were shot in Tembisa, where the real Andre Stander had been stationed on riot duty. The crew left most of the buildings as they were since they were old enough not to bear too many anachronisms.
