A Brilliant Madness
This is a straightforward biography of an enigmatic Twentieth Century figure. The American mathematician John Forbes Nash (1928-2015) was not a nice person, at least when he was young. His personality faults were glossed over in the film "A Beautiful Mind". There is none of that here; there are interviews with Nash himself as well as with colleagues and those close to him, including the illegitimate son he refused to acknowledge.
It remains to be seen how much of this was due to his schizophrenia, but probably not very much. Nash shared the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences with two colleagues for work he pioneered as a young man. If that recognition was somewhat belated, most people would have given odds it would have been posthumous.
Although Nash was unlucky to be stricken with schizophrenia, he was extremely lucky to be surrounded by people who refused to consign him to the scrap heap, including his long-suffering wife. Most people in a similar position are nowhere near as lucky.
