Bill Maher spent the opening portion of the first post-election Real Time, and the first episode with President-elect Donald Trump, discussing how the mogul became commander-in-chief despite getting 500,000 (and counting) less votes than Hillary Clinton.
"One other little detail about the election: Hillary won," Maher said in his opening monologue. "She won popular vote, probably by a million and a half. It's just that there were more Trump voters in the places that it counted, like Moscow."
In a sit-down interview with Eric Holder, the former Attorney General said flatly,...

This week marks the 10th anniversary of the release of "Crash" (on May 6, 2005), an all-star movie whose controversy came not from its provocative treatment of racial issues but from its Best Picture Oscar victory a few months later, against what many critics felt was a much more deserving movie, "Brokeback Mountain."
The "Crash" vs. "Brokeback" battle is one of those lingering disputes that makes the Academy Awards so fascinating, year after year. Moviegoers and critics who revisit older movies are constantly judging the Academy's judgment. Even decades of hindsight may not always be enough to tell whether the Oscar voters of a particular year got it right or wrong. Whether it's "Birdman" vs. "Boyhood," "The King's Speech" vs. "The Social Network," "Saving Private Ryan" vs. "Shakespeare in Love" or even "An American in Paris" vs. "A Streetcar Named Desire," we're still confirming the Academy's taste or dismissing it as hopelessly off-base years later.

As we continue with the list, we still see a lot of World War II, but throw in some World War I and Persian Gulf War, too. While some of the films in this portion of the list spin the war film into something a little more ingenious, it doesn’t completely rule out the idea of a patriotic call to arms film. We also see a few more foreign language films on the list, as well as some Oscar winners for their work. Without further ado, let’s light this candle.

Conflict: World War II
In 2008, the Dutch public named it the greatest Dutch film ever made. Who am I to argue? A surprisingly complete film from a director who has Showgirls and Hollow Man under his belt (and Starship Troopers and Robocop…I can’t be too hard...

Claude Lanzmann's new film focuses on a figure too complex and controversial for his seminal Holocaust documentary, Shoah – the Jewish Council president who collaborated with the Nazis. Agnès Poirier talks to the director about coming to admire a pariah
There are two men on a balcony looking out at the panorama of Rome. It is the summer of 1975. "Are you happy in Rome?" says one. "As happy as an exiled Jew can be," says the other. The man asking the question is Claude Lanzmann. He has just started work on what will take him 10 years to finish: Shoah, the ground-breaking, nine-and-a-half-hour film about the Holocaust, composed of first-hand testimony and eschewing historical footage. Simone de Beauvoir, his one-time lover, later called the film "a monument – one that for generations to come will enable everyone to understand one of the most sinister and enigmatic moments in history".
The man answering the question is Benjamin Murmelstein,...

What do Jumanji, Drop Dead Fred, Cliffhanger, Point Break, Starship Troopers and The Crow have in common? Well, they’re all well liked ‘90s films that are getting the remake treatment.
Evidently Hollywood loves to remake things, squeezing more money out of movies from the past because of the nostalgia people have for them. And it makes sense – Hollywood is a business, after all. It’s not even been a couple of decades since some of the above films (and others currently in development) were released and yet we’re getting up-to-date versions whether we like it or not.
So what other fondly remembered films from the 1990s could Hollywood eventually remake? Below is a list of 10 very real possibilities. Now these aren’t films that necessarily should be remade – in fact they very well may be classics that need not be touched – but just a group of movies that...

TV made by pesky Hollywood liberals is winning hearts and minds in the Middle East. How does the far-right like that?
I don't know if you're aware of this, but at our present step in the strange march of history, only one man – one frail, fallible man – stands between western civilisation and fiery, doomy, exploding death. It's not Barack Obama or George W Bush or Uncle Sam or the ghost of Sir Winston Churchill's most esteemed jowls or whatever. Nope.
That man?
It's, uh, David Schwimmer. Ross from Friends. He's our guy.
As the Guardian reported on Wednesday, according to a secret cable recently released by WikiLeaks:
"Satellite broadcasts of the Us TV shows Desperate Housewives and The Late Show With David Letterman are doing more to persuade Saudi youth to reject violent jihad than hundreds of millions of dollars of Us government propaganda, informants have told the American...
