Jon Iles was tried out for the role of Interceptor in an untransmitted pilot but he was felt to be "too nice". In this pilot episode, filmed in the south of France, Sally Hughes was the host (Annabel Croft in the transmitted episodes). One memorable incident occurred when a contestant manged to steal Interceptor's "zapper" and run off with it, which led to it being attached to his wrist by a strap in the transmitted episodes.
The Interceptor was limited in the number of shots he could take in one episode. The number was around 20. The Interceptor had a display mounted on the rear of his "zapper" showing how many shots he had left.
The Agusta A109A helicopter, G-MEAN, used by The Interceptor, was damaged beyond repair some years later in March 1999. It suffered a tail rotor failure while coming into land and landed heavily. The pilot and passenger escaped uninjured.
The Bell 206 Jetranger helicopter G-BHXU which was used for communications and to ferry the contestants to their start positions had previously been seen as the Skyrunner's helicopter in Treasure Hunt (1982). A gearbox/rotor failure in 1995 forced it to ditch in the sea near Alderney in the Channel Islands. The pilot Michael Malric-Smith (the Interceptor's pilot, "Mikey") managed to escape unharmed.
The "zapper" was bought from the British Army.
