Vera Farmiga Interview, Up In the Air

26 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

MoviesOnline sat down recently with Vera Farmiga to talk about her new movie,“Up in the Air,” about the timely odyssey of Ryan Bingham (Oscar winner George Clooney), a corporate downsizer and consummate modern business traveler who, after years of staying happily airborne, suddenly finds himself ready to make a real connection. When he falls for a simpatico fellow traveler (Farmiga), Ryan’s boss (Jason Bateman), inspired by a young, upstart efficiency expert (Anna Kendrick), threatens to permanently call him in from the road. Faced with the prospect, at once terrifying and exhilarating, of being grounded, Ryan begins to contemplate what it might actually mean to have a home.

For the vital role of Alex, whose elite travel program savvy seduces Ryan but who also triggers a desire for real sharing, director Jason Reitman turned to award-winning actress Vera Farmiga, best known for her role in Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed. »

Oscars quiz: Who got demoted?

21 November 2009 11:37 AM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

It doesn't matter what acting category you campaign for at the Academy Awards; voters can put you wherever they want. Most frequently, when ignoring category guidance, they tended to promote contenders from the supporting race to lead like Kate Winslet ("The Reader") and Keisha Castle-Hughes ("Whale Rider"), but sometimes they have the nerve to push a lead contender down to supporting. Which one of these actors suffered that humiliating fate? To see the answer, click on the "Continue reading" link under the photos. Answer: James Cromwell was demoted to the 1995 supporting race, where he lost to Kevin Spacey ("The Usual Suspects"). 10 Awesome Foreign Actresses in Movies You Must See!

25 September 2009 6:29 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

They're young, beautiful and talented, but some of them maybe quite unfamiliar to some of you. In our latest List of 10, tMF compilled 10 Foreign (if you like, Non-American) actresses and the must-see movies that made them 'hot properties' locally. Some of them joined Hollywood already - but have you seen them at their Best?

- - -

- - - It's a pity many of the roles given to them in Hollywood are not what you can call 'prestige' roles. Most of them are given the usual run-of-the-mill characters. Why not take a good look at their previous works and find out why we think they're awesome!

- - -

# 10 - Maria Valverde (Spain) - Maria Valverde was born in Madrid and says she always wanted to become an actress. She finally fulfilled her dream at the age of 16 with a leading role in Manuel Martín Cuenca movie, La flaqueza del bolchevique. »

tMF Talkback: Get ready to be disappointed with The Vintner's Luck!

15 September 2009 3:14 PM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

As expected, the movie version of a beloved novel by Elizabeth Knox, The Vintner's Luck, has a different movie version. It deviates completely from the essence of Knox's story. There is no more Xas-Sobran relationship which is the heart and soul of the novel. Instead the New Zealand filmmaker, Niki Caro, opted to make it a tringle of sorts - Sobran (Jeremie Renier)-Celeste (Keisha Castle-Hughes)-Xas (Gaspard Ulliel), and even a quartet - the Baroness Aurora de Valday (Vera Farmiga) who is a sort of a nuisance 'support'.

It seems to me that Caro's film version has maintained faith with neither the essence of the book nor the story itself. The love affair between Xas and Sobran has been transferred to Sobran and Céleste, thereby diluting and and making nonsense of »

Daily news dose: John Hughes dead at 59; Robert Luketic to direct new 'Barbarella' film

7 August 2009 12:47 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Here is your dose of film news for August 7, 2009:

Filmmaker John Hughes, whose credits include "The Breakfast Club," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and "Sixteen Candles," died of a sudden heart attack Thursday in New York. He was 59. Some of his writing credits include "Dennis the Menace" and the "Home Alone" films.

Robert Luketic is in talks to direct "Barbarella," a new version of Roger Vadim's 1968 sci-fi adventure starring Jane Fonda. Joe Gazzam will write the script, which follows a sexual chick traveling the universe and undertaking different missions. Luketic recently helmed "The Ugly Truth." (THR)

Niki Caro Melts for Groundswell Prods' Buttercup

6 August 2009 | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

- We'd have a problem type-casting Niki Caro as a genre, or subject specific director. She commenced her career with the delightful, child's fantasy with a moral at the end of the story locally set New Zealand pic (Whale Rider), followed with the women's rights in the workplace (North Country) and will preem a period piece at the Toronto Film Festival next month with the long awaited The Vintner's Luck. Now according to THR, Caro's new directing gig is a mid-life crisis, contempo dramedy from the Pov of a male character called Buttercup. Part of the 2007 Blacklist of Best Unproduced Screenplays, it surfaced at the bottom tier of the list - which means absolutely nothing about the scripts' quality, this is written by first time scribe Alice O'Neil and will be produced by Michael London's Groundswell Prods. who have the upcoming The Informant! and All Good Things as their next projects slated for release. »

Caro Moves from 'Vintner's Luck' to 'Buttercup'

6 August 2009 2:38 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I know very few people are going to click on this headline, but I think reporting on the work of Niki Caro is important since female directors are expected to have a great 2009 with the likes of Kathryn Bigelow already hitting it big with The Hurt Locker and Jane Campion, Mira Nair, Lone Scherfig, Nora Ephron and Nancy Meyers all making a splash later this year as well as the upcoming directorial debut of Drew Barrymore (I apologize if I am missing anyone). While the debut trailer for Caro's The Vintner's Luck certainly underwhelmed prior to its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September I still believe Whale Rider carries weight and North Country was a solid effort even if it wasn't a box-office or critical runaway. That said, next up for Caro is Buttercup reports The Hollywood Reporter with a script from Alice O'Neil. The »

According to The Hollywood Reporter director Niki Caro (Whale Rider) will be helming Buttercup for Michael London's Groundswell Productions.

The film follows a middle-age man who has messed up in life but tries to get himself together when his wife passes away. The script was written by Alice O'Neil.

"Alice writes with such a light touch, which is what makes you want to take a journey with the characters," states producer Brian Koppelman.
