Diggs Upsets Mom With TV Expletive

3 December 2009 2:01 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Taye Diggs upset his mother on TV in America on Wednesday night after using foul language to describe his feelings about people who can't accept his mixed-race marriage to actress Idina Menzel.

The Rent star was quizzed about the hatemail his white wife received after marrying him during an appearance on chat show Lopez Tonight - and he took his comments to the extreme.

He explained, "In the beginning, it rubbed some people the wrong way but, in this day and age, you've just got to say, 'F**k it!'"

Immediately realising he'd sworn on live TV, an embarrassed Diggs said, "My bad. My Bad. My mom's gonna kill me." »

Wicked’s Idina Menzel Would ‘Love’ to Guest Star on Glee

3 December 2009 11:18 AM, PST | People.com - TV Watch | See recent People.com - TV Watch news »

Following a guest stint by her Broadway costar Kristin Chenoweth and Glee club captain Rachel's (Lea Michele) show-stopping rendition of "Defying Gravity" (from the hit musical Wicked), it seems Broadway's original green witch, Idina Menzel, may pay a visit to McKinley High. "I know that she would love [to guest star on Glee]," Menzel's husband, Private Practice star Taye Diggs told Fancast of the Gleek community's desire to see the Tony-winner play the biological mother of Rachel, who is the proud daughter of two gay dads. Adding that Michele -- who originated the role of Wendla in the Broadway play Spring Awakening -- and Menzel are "fans of each other, »

I Love You Beth Cooper Blu-ray Review

18 November 2009 9:14 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Chris Columbus used to have a magic touch. Sure, you might not have liked the movies, but he was the hand behind the first two Home Alone movies and the first two Harry Potter films. He’s had misfires, for sure, but his first major script was Gremlins. Gremlins. But when you look at his filmography he goes from highs to lows, but there’s something of a chance-taker in him too. He was the guy who wanted to direct Rent, for god’s sake. And though his plastic hands have released such odious affairs as Stepmom and Bicentennial Man, he’s not a filmmaker to write off. My review of his latest - I Love You Beth Cooper - after the jump.

For his latest, he worked with Fox, got a midsummer release date, and when the film came out it was dumped like hot garbage. Perhaps it was having an unknown lead, »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’ Inspires Nothing But Hate

16 November 2009 8:08 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Chris Columbus is not a filmmaker renowned for his use of subtlety. He seems incapable of telling a relatable human story without relying on his trademark brand of sophomoric slapstick. I was surprised that Macaulay Culkin didn’t pop up in Columbus’s “Rent,” and start hurling paint cans at the characters during their “Seasons of Love.” Even at age 51, Columbus is still an unruly child at heart.

That’s why his best films are the ones aimed at children, such as the original “Home Alone” or the first two “Harry Potter” installments. But when he attempts to reach an older audience, the results are often disastrous. And in an era of exceptional adult comedies, “I Love You, Beth Cooper” is a flat-out embarrassment.

Blu-Ray Rating: 1.0/5.0

This film proves that any source material can be drained of its humanity. The script was written by Larry Doyle, who based it »

Reflections on Rent National Tour

2 November 2009 1:49 PM, PST | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

What more can be said about a multiple award-winning show that ran for over 12 years on Broadway? The answer is probably not much. No matter how many times I see this show, every viewing of Rent never fails to remind me that there really is "no day but today." "Rent: The Broadway Tour" opened its limited engagement run October 28th at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and I could not pass up the opportunity to see it one last time, especially with the chance to see three original Broadway cast members, Anthony Rapp (Mark), Adam Pascal (Roger) and Gwen Stewart (Mrs. Jefferson and others).

Rapp and Pascal have been playing these roles for years, but you wouldn't know it from their high energy performances. While waiting for the show to being, I overheard plenty of buzz from audience members. Many were excited to see Rapp and Pascal perform the »

Carrie: The Musical Returns to Broadway

29 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

"They're all gonna laugh at you!" Someone should have told that to the original producers of the '80s Broadway dud Carrie: The Musical . It would've spared them some pain. Alas, the show went on and after only five performances it fell harder than a bucket of pig's blood. When I worked in Manhattan, a recording of one performance landed in my lap. While interesting, none of it worked. Over two decades later, six figures are being pumped into a revitalized Carrie: The Musical . Behind this endeavor are Jeffrey Seller and Kevin McCollum (of Rent , Avenue Q , West Side Story ). Why the fascination to try and tell Stephen King's '74 tome as a musical is beyond me. What - is no one interested in bringing Maximum Overdrive to the stage? I'd see that. For »

Review: Rent Broadway Tour Measures the Love at Ocpac (Ends 10/25)

22 October 2009 5:24 AM, PDT | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

Has it really been 13 years since Rent first arrived on Broadway? As soon as original cast members Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp make their entrance on stage to start the current "Broadway Tour" production (playing through October 25 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center), the audience erupts into deafening screams and howls, almost as if this was not a musical theater play but, rather, a rock reunion concert. In some aspects, it is. We've got two original members of the "band" coming together on the road, singing familiar hits...a little older—perhaps a little wiser—and getting the royal rock treatment, even before a single lyric is uttered. »

Fall Frights: Grindhouse (Film Review)

20 October 2009 1:16 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 04/01/2007

In the Robert Rodriguez-scripted/directed first of its two conjoined movies, Grindhouse is the ultimate sugar rush for horror fans, a high-calorie, low-nutrition blast of cheap thrills wrought on a big budget. In the second, Quentin Tarantino upends the framework and traditions of exploitation fare to craft a film that’s just as much a showcase for his gift of (writing) gab as it is for action. And in both Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof, a love and respect shines through for the B-movie tradition that too many others “homage” with snarky irony. The wholeheartedness with which they express their devotion to the form almost amounts to a kind of innocence, and for all the explicit mayhem on screen, »

iMURDERS (DVD Review)

13 October 2009 1:54 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

From the moment iMURDERS (just out on DVD from Anchor Bay) begins, the viewer is struck with a feeling of, to use on-line slang, Wtf? Halfway through the credits is a video interlude depicting a cheating husband getting busted by his wife, and a subsequent gunshot. We don’t see the faces of anyone involved, or even who takes the bullet. Once the remaining credits come to an end, this event isn’t brought up again for more than half the movie; we literally forget all about it until the shooting resurfaces. What unspools instead is a thinly veiled morality tale for the Internet generation, hiding behind a murder mystery.

As the story proper begins, we meet Sandra Wilson (Terri Colombino) as she’s about to move into a new apartment. Having learned about the listing from one of her on-line friends, Sandra is eager to show her less tech-savvy »

Lee and De Niro Team for Showtime Drama

17 September 2009 2:58 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Robert De Niro and Spike Lee have teamed with Showtime to develop a drama series about Manhattan's Alphabet City, report the trades. The project, titled Alphaville, will be written by John Ridley (Red Tails, Three Kings), with Lee on board to direct the potential pilot. Alphaville is an ensemble drama chronicling Alphabet City's gritty and tumultuous past before it became the gentrified East Village. Set during the 1980s, it will re-create the neighborhood's eclectic mix of struggling artists and musicians living alongside Puerto Rican and black families. Along with its growing bohemian and celebrity population that also included graffiti artists, break-dancers, rappers and DJs, the neighborhood was plagued by illegal drug activity and violent crime. Local tensions culminated in the Tompkins Square Park riot of 1988, in which police clashed with anarchists and homeless activists. The 1980s Alphabet City was the setting for the musical Rent. The neighborhood also served as »

Robert De Niro and Spike Lee Welcome You to Alphaville

17 September 2009 9:38 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

This past July, Showtime received 29 Primetime Emmy nominations, the most nominations in the network’s history. By contrast, HBO, the long acknowledged leader in cable television, led the entire field with 99 nominations. Looking to gain ground in the noms-race, Showtime is teaming up with Robert De Niro and Spike Lee to produce “Alphaville,” a new ensemble series about Manhattan’s Alphabet City set in the 1980s. Hit the jump to find out more.

Unlike De Niro and Lee, I am not a native New Yorker so when I first heard about this project I wondered if it was going to be like a Sesame Street version of “Mad Men.” While such a show would be potentially hilarious, “Alphaville” sounds like it will be dark, gritty and unflinching. Better known today as the upscale East Village, Alphabet City has a stormy past. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show will chronicle »

Spike Lee and Robert De Niro Serialize Alphabet City for Showtime

17 September 2009 8:43 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

All the big names are going to cable. We just reported on Martin Scorsese's work on an HBO series called Boardwalk Empire (starring Steve Buscemi) and now two other giants of the New York filmmaking scene are heading to showtime: Spike Lee and Robert De Niro are producing a series called Alphaville, with Lee directing the potential pilot episode. THR reports that John Ridley (U-Turn, Red Tails) is the chief writer on the series set in Manhattan's Alphabet City. A part of the East Village, Alphabet City (named for Avenues A through D) was once a much tougher neighborhood than it is today. It was the epicenter of Puerto Rican culture in Manhattan and eventually an artist haven as well, thanks to low rents. It is the setting for Rent and, more recognizably, for Taxi Driver. The show will be set during the 1980s when the neighborhood was really bubbling and, »

Spike Lee and Robert De Niro go TV

17 September 2009 12:29 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

It looks like TV is still able to attract big name film talent - following in the footsteps of Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and Spike Lee are developing Alphaville. It'll focus on the history of what is now New York's East Village - but was once known as Alphabet City. Set in the 1980s, it'll chronicle the troubled past lived by a mix of struggling artists and musicians and the racial tensions that also flared up (think Rent, but edgier. And less breaking out into show tunes). The boiling point came with the Tompkins Square Park...
