Chef Anita Lo has made quite a name for herself since she decided to treat her French language BA from Columbia as a prerequisite for becoming a classically trained French chef. Since then, she’s used that foundation as a springboard to include a wide variety of the world’s cuisines in her “Contemporary American” (read: exactingly tasty fusion) oeuvre. Lo has been featured on Top Chef Masters, Iron Chef America, The Martha Stewart Show, and was also named one of The Best New Chefs in America by Food and Wine in 2001.
Anita’s Greenwich Village restaurant, Annisa, means “women” in Arabic. The restaurant website describes the menu as made up of “flavors inspired by her Asian roots, her travels, and seasonal influences with her classic French technique,” and the wine list primarily contains wines made by female vintners or from women-owned vineyards.

Graham Kerr established himself as 'The Galloping Gourmet' back in the late 60s, and his work helped inspire Rachael Ray to cook. Wednesday, Ray got to fulfill a dream by cooking with Kerr on 'Rachael Ray' (weekdays, syndicated). The pair made a healthy dish, cauliflower with carrot cheese sauce.
Kerr has been cooking more healthy dishes lately, and chronicled his efforts to cook with foods he grows himself in his new book, 'Growing at the Speed of Life: A Year in the Life of My First Kitchen Garden.' The cauliflower and cheese sauce recipe is in the book, and, as Ray mentions, is mostly just vegetables and skim milk with a few spices like cumin, cayenne, and Dijon mustard. "Very rich, but this has no fat in it at all," said Kerr as he poured the sauce on the cauliflower.

. . . whatcha got cookin'? A new culinary cable channel, at least if your name is Scripps Networks Interactive (Nyse:sni). The company, which also serves as proprietor of the Food Network, decided preemptively to create an edgier second eatery before a competitor could swoop in and steal its lunch, not to mention its viewers. Hence the Cooking Channel, which launches in high def on May 31 and will target the foodies in the 18-49 demographic. The channel will debut under the supervision of Food Net vet Michael Smith and with the ministrations - and, no doubt, the minestrone - of David Rocco (host of David Rocco's Dolce Vita), Chuck Hughes (Chuck's Day Off), and a host of other hosts. The focus is food of all nationalities, ethnicities and varieties. Also on the menu are vintage episodes of The Galloping Gourmet...

Our brothers and sisters over at TV Squad have busted through the boob tube and brought with them the following juicy bits of must-see eye candy.
Merlin Olsen, former star of Little House on the Prairie and Father Murphy, is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer and is suing NBC for exposing him to asbestos. For those of us jonesing for new episodes of Lost, check out this contest, the winners of which will get to see a sneak preview of the season premiere. Check out this look at the top ten cooking shows of all time, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers The Galloping Gourmet. Over the long history of BBC's Dr. Who the good Doctor has regenerated several times, allowing the show a handy plot device for changing its lead actor. BBC News has an article online in which several current cast members are interviewed about the phenomenon.

I'm sort of a cooking show geek. I can watch Martha Stewart bake a pie or Alton Brown explain how a convection oven works any time of the day, even two in the morning. And it's not like I just started watching cooking shows in the past several years because it was hip to do so, I've been watching them since I was a kid. I was rather addicted to The French Chef and The Galloping Gourmet when I was younger.
Both shows make it to our sister site Slashfood's list of the ten greatest cooking shows of all-time.
