The Yankees, Guy Fawkes Day And New Jim Lee Art In Today's Twitter Report

5 November 2009 11:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Simon Pegg tweeted an impassioned appreciation for "V for Vendetta" today in honor of Guy Fawkes Day, proving that he has not forgotten the 5th November. Also not forgetting were Jill Thompson, Neil Kleid and a few other I couldn't fit in.

Jon Favreau, it seems, didn't have time to commemorate anything last night, as he was hard at work editing "Iron Man 2." If he was following Joe Quesada or Matt Fraction, however, he probably kept up on the game's details just fine. Scope out all of those posts below, along with a new Jim Lee page and Geoff Johns' mystery project that he wants to work with Greg Rucka on.

It's all in the Twitter Report for November 5, 2009.

Nickelodeon Buys Rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

22 October 2009 8:09 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

According to Deadline Hollywood, Viacom's Nickelodean purchased the global intellectual property rights and merchandising rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Tmnt) in a deal estimated at $60 million. Nickelodean plans to develop a new CG-animated TV series starring the Turtles and release a new feature film of their exploits in 2012.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book was originally self-published in 1984 by creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as a parody of popular comic books of the time, including Frank Miller's Ronin and Marvel Comics' Daredevil. The comic book spawned a tremendously popular cartoon series, multiple video games, countless toys, three live-action movies, and the 2007 Imagi Animation Studios' CG-animated movie, simply titled Tmnt.

Nickelodean plans to maintain a relationship with Playmates Toyes, Inc., the company that first manufactured and marketed Turtles toys and is responsible for much of the franchise's success throughout the years.

Rumor Patrol: Vin Diesel Still Doing ‘xXx 3′

19 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

There was a rumor floated recently by CineFools that Vin Diesel had dropped out of xXx: The Return of Xander Cage.  If you heard that rumor and freaked out, you can now turn red ’cause Diesel’s publicist emailed MTV and said it was untrue.  This is exactly what was said in that email:

“I made a few calls on this and I can tell you that it is completely not true.“

The action-packed xXx franchise began with Diesel in 2002, when he played the extreme sports athlete-turned government operative, Xander Cage.  xXx: State of the Union (2005) ripped Cage away from us and replaced him with Ice Cube’s Darius Stone. The third installment in the franchise is to be directed by Ericson Core, who brought us Invincible and was the cinematographer on Daredevil.

It was suspected the Deisel had dropped out of The Return of Xander Cage because director Rob Cohen, »

Deadpool And Lobo Top 'R'-Rated Movie Poll!

12 October 2009 1:01 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

While this week's poll was a bit more subdued than last week's "Spider-Man 4" villain blowout, readers still crowded in to registered their opinion on which comic book movie they'd like to see with an "R" rating.

In the end, Marvel's "Merc With A Mouth" earned the most votes, but Deadpool was followed close behind by DC's "Main Man," Lobo. Possibly most interesting, however, was the fact that the third most popular option in the poll was a very clear "None of the Above."

According to 15 percent of Splash Page readers, the script and filmmaker outweigh any concerns over the intended audience for a film—which makes a lot of sense, of course. Read on for a look at how the numbers added up after all the votes were tallied.

Poll Results

Deadpool: 22%

Lobo: 19%

Wolverine: 10%

Ghost Rider: 8%

Batman: 8%

Daredevil: 6%

From the vault: Blu-ray review of The Spirit (Extended Cut)

8 October 2009 5:37 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Frank Miller is regarded as a genius in the comic book world.

As a writer and artist, his work on Daredevil and Batman has gained great acclaim. His limited series Batman: Year One was among the inspirations for Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins movie in 2005.

He went on to create the graphic novels Sin City (adapted into a film which Miller co-directed with Robert Rodriguez) and 300 (also turned into a film, produced by Miller and directed by Zack Snyder).

After the release of Sin City, Miller was approached about making a film of The Spirit using the same gritty, film-noir style. It was his first solo project as writer-director and was released on the big screen by Lionsgate in December 2008, and on DVD/Blu-ray in the UK at the end of May this year.

Monday Night Poll: The Lamest Superhero Movie Villains

5 October 2009 8:18 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I grew up loving all things Superman, but even as a lad of 13 I could tell that the villain in Superman IV -- Nuclear Man, created when Supes threw all the world's nuclear weapons into the sun -- was dumb. He had no personality. He didn't even have a name. "Nuclear Man" is what the closing credits called him, but no one in the film ever calls him anything. Rule No. 1 of being a supervillain: You must have a name. I cannot imagine any exceptions to that rule.

So Nuclear Man is probably my vote for the lamest villain in a superhero movie, but it's hardly a slam-dunk. He has a lot of competition. Arnold Schwarzenegger's campy Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin is legendary. At the opposite end of the muscles scale, there's whiny Venom (Topher Grace) in Spider-Man 3 and emo-goth Blackheart (Wes Bentley) in Ghost Rider. And »

The Lizard And Carnage Top 'Spider-Man 4' Villain Poll!

5 October 2009 1:41 PM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Last week, I asked readers which villain they'd like to see brawl with the ol' web-slinger in "Spider-Man 4," the next installment of Sony's "Spider-Man" movie franchise.

After all the votes were counted, Curt Conners' reptilian alter ego The Lizard narrowly edged out the psychopathic symbiote Carnage as the most-wanted bad guy for the next film. With a series of mentions in previous films establishing Connors' character, seeing The Lizard in "Spider-Man 4" certainly seems possible—but with a "Venom" spin-off green-lit, one has to wonder whether we'll see Carnage in "Spider-Man 4" or "Venom" first.

Read on for the full breakdown of the votes and a selection of reader comments explaining why they voted the way they did.

Poll Results

Lizard: 29%

Carnage: 26%

Mysterio: 10%

Venom (again): 8%

Electro: 7%

Kraven the Hunter: 7%

Morbius the Living Vampire: 4%

Shocker: 2%

Vulture: 2%

Marvel Is Not Enough… Stan Lee Wants DC Comics Cameos!

30 September 2009 8:45 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Stan Lee, the co-creator behind such Marvel figures as Thor, Iron Man, Daredevil and Spider-Man, has had cameos in just about anything and everything [1] coming out of Marvel with regards to feature films. However, that isn't enough for the godfather of comics. No, Lee now wants to reach for the sky and start expanding his choice of movie roles to those outside of Marvel franchises. It's time to go DC style! Lee came forward with his wishes in a Tweet on his Twitter account [2], where he stated: "Wouldn't it be cool if DC gave me a cameo in their next Batman movie! What are you waiting for? Start a letter-writing campaign!" Even though it is highly unlikely that he will start showing up in DC properties as well, he did do some work for the company back in the day. Still, it was nothing near the height of his work at Marvel, »

Stan Lee Wants Cameos in DC Comics' Films

29 September 2009 7:00 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Stan Lee, the co-creator of such Marvel heroes as The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Daredevil, Spider-Man and the X-Men, has appeared in just about every Marvel film. In fact, directors have been coming up with fun ways to work in Lee's cameo into their films. Now, Lee has revealed via his Twitter account that he wants more screen time. But it's not bigger roles that he's looking for, it's to appear in more films. He wrote: "Wouldn't it be cool if DC gave me a cameo in their next Batman movie! What are you waiting for? Start a letter-writing campaign!" Lee is mostly known as the man behind Marvel, but he has done a bit of work with DC Comics as well. Probably not enough to deserve cameo roles, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. »

Animated 'Popeye' Being Developed

24 September 2009 8:35 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Because it would have been just too much information all at once, I didn't write about everything as part of yesterday's Marvel Comics clearance sale. To catch you up: Disney's buying Marvel so anything that happens after the expiration of existing options on specific characters at other studios would be all Disney, all the time. There could be some joint productions, I guess, but even Spider-Man, that Sony staple, will eventually wind up at Disney.

Therefore, Columbia and Fox are train to squeeze the life out of Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and Silver Surfer, all of which are due to receive sequels/reboots/whatever. And that will all happen in short order.

What we left out was an unrelated comment by former Marvel chief Avi Arad, who had plenty to say about the livelihood of the Marvel Universe. But he is also developing a new CGI version of Popeye, »

Ghost Rider 2, Daredevil Reboot Confirmed

24 September 2009 1:50 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Columbia Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to Ghost Rider starring Nicolas Cage and is in discussions with David S. Goyer to write the script.

Goyer has plenty of experience with comic book properties, and in the better half of the genre (not the side with Ghost Rider).  He wrote the scripts for all three Blade movies, the story for both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and penned the X-Men Origins: Magneto script that’s still waiting for a green light.  The studio will actually be using a Ghost Rider script written by Goyer years ago (2000), so plans could move ahead very quickly on a darker, more violent version.

The original Ghost Rider was written by director Mark Steven Johnson, and I think most will agree that it sucked.

The recent activity on both characters is a result of Disney’s acquisition of Marvel for $4 billion last month. »

"Ghost Rider" Revs Up Sequel!

24 September 2009 1:48 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Columbia Pictures revs up for a second installment of "Ghost Rider."

The studio is in early negotiations with David Goyer to create the story and supervise writers. Nicolas Cage is expected to return as Johnny Blaze and his hero alter-ego Ghost Rider.

The original 2007 film was just okay, but it's finding new blood in cable and DVD. The first film was written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson, the same guy who gave us "Daredevil" and Elektra (he only wrote that Jennifer Garner flick).

Goyer hasn't signed on to the sequel yet, but apparently, the "Batman Begins" writer penned a "Ghost Rider" script years ago and Columbia's interested.

Avi Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul are producing, with Gary Foster as executive producer. Arad is also working with "Twilight" director, Catherine Hardwicke, to adapt James Patterson's "Maximum Ride" book series. He is also securing film rights to make »

Marvel's Avi Arad Secures Rights for a CGI Popeye Movie

24 September 2009 1:40 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Yesterday we keyed you in on some updates regarding a whole slew of Marvel properties from Ghost Rider to Daredevil. Well within that Variety article was a lot of information thrown around concerning all the reboots of franchises and tying most of them back to Marvel Studios founder and chief creative officer of Marvel Entertainment, Avi Arad. The guy has had his hands in all Marvel productions, but a little tidbit that almost went overlooked regarding a project Arad is working on outside of the Marvel universe: "Arad has also secured rights to make a CGI animated feature based on the venerable strongman Popeye." Popeye the Sailor Man has been an iconic comic character since its inception in the late 1920's, but an attempt at a cinematic adaptation of the spinach eating sailor left something to be desired. Batman screenwriter in talks for Ghost Rider sequel

24 September 2009 12:04 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

David Goyer, who was a writer on the Blade movies and both of Christopher Nolan's Batman films, is reportedly in early talks to develop a second Ghost Rider film for Sony's Columbia Pictures.

Goyer also directed the third Blade movie and is in line to direct X-Men Origins: Magneto, as well as being the creator of new TV show FlashForward.

Variety says the 43-year-old is in discussions to create the story and supervise writers for a Ghost Rider sequel, which is set to once again star Nicolas Cage.

Goyer hasn't yet signed on but plans are already under way to base the sequel on a Ghost Rider script he had written years ago.

The first Ghost Rider film, released in 2007, was written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson, who had also directed Daredevil for 20th Century Fox.

New Popeye Movie in Development

24 September 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Marvel head Avi Arad recently revealed that studios are hard at work on "Ghost Rider 2," "Fantastic Four" and "Daredevil" reboots and a "Silver Surfer" spin-off. But that's not all that he has planned. Arad also secured the rights to "Popeye," in hopes of rebooting that franchise as well. But he won't go down the same path that the 1980 film, starring Robin Williams, did. He is instead planning to make it a CGI animated feature. Popeye the Sailor first appeared in comic strips back in 1929 and went on to be featured in comic books, animated films, video games, hundreds of advertisements and numerous television shows. The character has been around so long that he has entered the public domain in most countries. Unfortunately for Arad, Popeye remain under copyright in the Us. Popeye on "Family Guy": »

In the wake of Disney's pending $4 billion purchase of Marvel Entertainment, there is a flurry of development activity for Marvel Comics, character-based movies, currently under contract with various studios. According to reports, Columbia Pictures is developing a big screen sequel to Marvel Comics' Ghost Rider, with David "Blade" Goyer in negotiations to create a new story for actor Nicolas "Face/Off" Cage, expected to reprise his role as 'Johnny Blaze'. The new film will be produced by Avi "Man-Thing" Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul. Gary Foster will executive produce. Film adaptations of Marvel characters at Sony, Fox, Universal and Paramount are also in fast-track development, before those screen rights revert back to Marvel Entertainment, for 'inactivity', as was the case with Marvel titles "Doctor Strange" and "Black Panther". Daredevil Reboot Confirmed

23 September 2009 11:48 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Another day, another Marvel story. But hidden in the ho-hum news from Variety that another Nicolas Cage-starring Ghost Rider is certainly on the way, is the rather more tantalising news that a re-start for Daredevil is in the works.Let's get Ghost Rider out of the way first: David Goyer has yet to sign anything, but word is he'll be getting story credit on the second film and overseeing the writing, which is slightly odd because it seems to be based on one of his own scripts that's been gathering dust for several years. Maybe it needs re-tooling but he's not quite up for doing that job himself. It's once again a Columbia project, to be produced by Avi Arad, Michael DeLuca and Steven Paul. And it's widely expected, given what he's said before, that it'll be Nicolas Cage riding through your town with his head on fire for the second time. »
