Nimród Antal is in the middle of shooting Predators for 20th Century Fox and producer Robert Rodriguez, but the director recently took the time to do a phone interview promoting his third movie, Armored.
ComingSoon was able to ask about this weekend’s release and squeezed a few details about the Predator franchise relaunch due out July 2010.
Aside from the Hungarian name, the filmmaker has taken some flack for casting Oscar-winner Adrien Brody in the lead for the next in a series accustomed to the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Here’s what Antal had to say in his own defense. “It was a challenge in finding a balance. I think when we cast Adrian, there were a lot of people going, ‘What?’ but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that. »

A veteran TV writer has been hired to re-energize the 'Underworld' franchise.
John Hlavin, who has written for TV shows including The Shield and Daybreak, and is currently developing a Western screenplay called The Gunslinger at Warner Bros., has been hired to write the fourth Underworld film, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog.
The series revolves around an ongoing war between vampires and werewolves, although the last installment was a prequel. Hlavin would not disclose the plot of the next film, but said it definitely will not go the prequel route. "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements," he said.

John Hlavin, whose credits include "The Shield" and "Trust Me," is on board to write "Underworld 4," the latest installment in the popular series that began with Len Wiseman's "Underworld" in 2003.
Hlavin told Heat Vision that plot details will remain secret for a while. However, he said "Underworld 4" won't be a prequel. "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences...," he said.
Kate Becksinale said last year she probably won't return for another film. Her appearance in a fourth film has been rumored for a while though, but no official deals are in place at this stage. »

"The Shield" writer John Hlavin will pen the script for a fourth "Underworld" at Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment reports Heat Vision. While Hlavin won't give away details on the storyline, he does confirm it's not a prequel and it should "introduce fresh elements" as the filmmakers don't want to redo the first three films. No director or stars like Kate Beckinsale, Bill Nighy, Michael Sheen or Rhona Mitra have signed to return. Len Wiseman, Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard Wright are producing.... »

In January 2011, the Underworld franchise will try once again to make a good movie, which has proven difficult since the first one, which got plenty of mileage out of Kate Beckinsale in a bodysuit. Even as loud as the third movie was, it still put me to sleep. Literally. And whenever that happens, which isn't often, it's always the movie's fault.
I might not have been the only one, as it turns out, because Underworld 3: No, That's Not Kate Beckinsale was not the success the first two movies were. Still, with vampires back in vogue - particularly when combined with werewolves - Screen Gems really has nothing to lose by dipping in the well once again. To that end, John Hlavin (The Shield) has been brought in to right part four, with or without Beckinsale, who The Hollywood Reporter reveals has not signed anything to return.

So not only is another "Underworld" installment in the works, but the film's already found a writer! What? I wasn't even aware they were making a fourth film. Of course, "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" did far better than anyone expected, particularly with the absence of Kate Beckinsale. According to reports, the next entry will be written by the "The Shield" scribe John Hlavin. While he wouldn't reveal any details about the upcoming movie, he did make it quite clear that it wouldn't be a prequel. "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements." Original "Underworld" director, Len Wiseman, is on board as producer yet the film has yet to find a director. We'll keep you posted.

Screen Gems/Lakeshore have found a cheap writer to journey once again to a world of vampires and werewolves. John Hlavin has signed to pen Underworld 4.
Many media outlets are describing Hlavin as writer for FX’s “The Shield,” but he wrote two of the 89 episodes and served as story editor on four others. The rest of his resume is pretty bare though.
Kate Beckinsale has not agreed to return to the series, which Hlavin confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter “is not a prequel.” Neither has Rhona Mitra, who replaced Beckinsale as the bad ass brunette for the third movie (a prequel) titled Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.
In an interview in August, Beckinsale said she would not be adverse to it, but they would have to come up with an amazing script. Then again, she thought the whole thing was a rumor at the time and she’s »

The Shield was one of those acclaimed and beloved TV series that had its own audience for sure, but thanks to a spot on cable, didn't exactly blow up into the mainstream the way it might have. But since the show has wrapped, at least, the people behind it have been moving on to even bigger things. John Hlavin, a writer for the series, has signed on to write the screenplay for the fourth Underworld film. According to THR, Hlavin is pretty much the only person attached at this point. The director of the first two films, Len Wiseman, is so far only on board as a producer, and Kate Beckinsale-- incidentally, the director's wife-- isn't sure what she's doing either. Hlavin promised THR that "it's not a prequel, and added, "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first »

The fourth installment in the Underworld series -- whose quality you readers seem to be divided over -- now has a writer and it's none other than John Hlavin from The Shield. With no one yet signed to direct, and neither Kate Beckinsale or Rhona Mitra (from the third film) attached to star, everything about this project seems to be up in the air. The only things we can confirm so far, is that Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films, will produce, and that the movie is not a prequel. Said, Hlavin,"It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements." Judging by this statement, it seems like the fourth movie will launch a whole new group of characters and storyline. »

Underworld 4 still doesn’t have a star attached (no Kate Beckinsale (Underworld, Underworld: Evolution) or Rhona Mitra (prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans) but it does have a writer.
Screen Gems has tapped The Shield writer John Hlavin to write the script for the fourth entry in the Underworld series. Want to know what Underworld 4 will be about? Keep waiting.
“I can tell you it’s not a prequel,” Hlavin said. “It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don’t want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements.”
The 3D project is still without a director but is still on track for a January 2011 release.

The Underworld series has been on a steady decline since the first film, but I now find myself in the strange predicament of being very interested in the fourth film. THR tells us John Hlavin, who previously wrote for “The Shield” has just been hired to write the fourth installment in Screen Gems/Lakeshore’s “Underworld” franchise.
Len Wiseman directed the first two films in the series and will be producing the as-of-yet unnamed film. Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard Wright of Lakeshore will also be producing.
So far the fourth film has no director or stars attached but I think the foundation of a good movie is the writer. The Shield has gotten rave reviews and I’ll be interested to see if Hlavin can bring some of the magic of The Shield to this sagging franchise.
Hlavin said the plot is under wraps, “but I can tell »

Writer John Hlavin has been around the block. He's written several episodes of The Shield, the incredibly popular FX show, and episodes of Trust Me, the recently canceled TNT drama. But none of that will compare with the watchful eyes that will be upon his next project, as he signs on to pen the fourth installment in the Underworld franchise for Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment. The fourth film -- which still does not have a director attached -- is "not a prequel," says Hlavin, who according to Heat Vision is keeping the plot under wraps. "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences," he added. "Meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements." With a fourth “Underworld” entry already greenlit by the studio, the biggest question on everyone’s mind (or at least, everyone who thinks werewolves and vampires fighting in a gothic setting with dark-blue scenery is awesome, anyway) is whether either of the franchise’s two British heroines will return in the leading role. Will it be Kate Beckinsale once again, as rumored, or her replacement Rhona Mitra? According to this latest report, it might be neither. Or possibly both. Okay, so I made the last part up, but one can dream, can’t one? What is a sure thing, though, is that a writer has been assigned to pen the fourth movie in former “The Shield” scribe John Hlavin. The writer has confirmed that “Underworld 4″ will not be a prequel like the previous entry, and he added this: “It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that »

What would it take to get you really excited for the fourth Underworld film? I'm not sure anything would do the trick for me (I wasn't excited for the second and third by any means) but putting a really good writer on the job would help. Seeing that a writer from The Shield would be writing the picture gave me a little boost of interest. Only a little boost, though, because it isn't series creator Shawn Ryan, but John Hlavin, who wrote a couple episodes of the final season. THR has the goods on Hlavin, who has done some other TV work here and there, most recently writing a couple episodes of the ad agency show Trust Me. Beyond this hire, we don't know much about the film, and prior statements about it should probably be taken with a grain of salt. While 3D is a fairly reasonable expectation, until »

After the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale decided not to return for the third installment of even more vampire / werewolf battles in the Underworld series, I thought that it'd at least become a straight-to-dvd franchise, if not fall into oblivion. But apparently Beckinsale's replacement Rhona Mitra got the job done to the tune of $91 million internationally, so the series will continue as THR's Heat Vision announces that John Hlavin (writer for the FX series "The Shield") will take on scripting responsibilities for a fourth installment of the franchise, but neither Mitra nor Beckinsale are attached, and the project is still in need of a director. Hlavin wouldn't give up any plot details, but he did say "I can tell you it's not a prequel. The Heat Vision Blog reported yesterday that John Hlavin, a writer from the series The Shield, has signed on to write the script for Underworld 4.
They’re also reporting that Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films and poster girl of the franchise has yet to sign on and they do not have a director. However, Hlavin does confirm that the film is a sequel and that it will definitely appeal to fans of the first movies.
Check out what Hlavin says below which definitely hint at the fan-favorite character making a return.
