As a “thank you” to fans for the success of Godzilla Minus One at the US box office, Toho International has announced a special one-week screening window for the newly remastered black & white version, titled Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color.
Quotes From Director, Writer & VFX Supervisor Takashi Yamazaki:
“I was very happy that the North American audience embraced Godzilla Minus One and gave us positive feedback such as "it was incredible! ," "it was scary!," and "it made me cry!” And now I am very pleased to be able to release a black-and-white version for North America as well. Godzilla Minus One /Minus Color will bring a new and visceral experience to audiences and I hope they will tremble with a new kind of terror!”
“Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color is not just a simple black and white version. Our colorist took the time and care to go through a very meticulous and complex process.

The awesome destruction of the iconic kaiju unleashed in post-war Japan will be on display when a black-and-white version of Godzilla Minus One hits theaters later this month.
The 37th installment in Toho International’s long-running monster franchise is, after all, a period piece showing Godzilla wreaking havoc as Japan struggles to recover after World War II. So a newly remastered black-and-white version is fitting for a special one-week run in cinemas billed by Toho as a “thank you” to fans after the color version of Godzilla Minus One surpassed $50 million at the domestic box office.
The Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color version bowed in Japan on Jan. 12 and will reach U.S. theaters on Jan. 26 for the limited run. The film’s story starts in the final days of World War II, when kamikaze pilot Koichi (Ryunokuke Kamiki) makes the decision not to die for his country but rather...

Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus One" comes out just prior to the 70th anniversary of Ishiro Honda's 1954 original "Gojira," and audiences have been on quite a journey throughout those decades.
By the lore of Honda's film, Godzilla was a massive amphibious animal created by nuclear bomb test radiation. He was more than a dinosaur that could be defeated by weapons. He was a physical manifestation of post-war nuclear devastation, a monstrous legacy of what weapons of mass destruction have wrought. Mass destruction only leads to more mass destruction. The 1954 film's scientists ultimately have to invent an even more devastating weapon, the Oxygen Destroyer, to defeat the beast. It is a somber, sad movie about how Japan -- about how humanity -- is unable to break a cycle of wartime annihilation. It wouldn't be until 1995's "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah," however, that a monster would rise from the remnants of the Oxygen Destroyer.

It’s a typical refrain from moviegoers: which films should I watch next? Fortunately, there are plenty of highly anticipated movies on the way, both in theaters and on streaming services, to keep film fans eating very well in 2023, from blockbuster superhero adventures to spy thrillers to high-concept sci-fi to creepy horrors.
That’s why we’ve put together a list of all the major releases coming this year. There are more than a few films of varying flavors coming in 2023 that should appeal to you: a new Yorgos Lanthimos experiment and a nearly four-hour Martin Scorsese epic about how the West was… poisoned. That, plus plenty of franchise fare, from Aquaman 2 and Wonka to The Marvels and even a new Godzilla flick from Toho! Major horror franchises return in a big way this year too, with Saw X and Exorcist: Believer both slated for the fall.

October’s here and it’s time to get spooked. After last year’s superb “’70s Horror” lineup, the Criterion Channel commemorates October with a couple series: “Universal Horror,” which does what it says on the tin (with special notice to the Spanish-language Dracula), and “Home Invasion,” which runs the gamut from Romero to Oshima with Polanski and Haneke in the mix. Lest we disregard the programming of Cindy Sherman’s one feature, Office Killer, and Jennifer’s Body, whose lifespan has gone from gimmick to forgotten to Criterion Channel. And if you want to stretch ideas of genre just a hair, their “True Crime” selection gets at darker shades of human nature.
It’s not all chills and thrills, mind. October also boasts a Kirk Douglas repertoire, movies by Doris Wishman and Wayne Wang, plus Manoel de Oliveira’s rarely screened Porto of My Childhood. And Edgar Wright gets the “Adventures in Moviegoing” treatment,...

Disney is taking fire from conservatives complaining about so-called “cancel culture” for a change the company made to Disney Plus — five months ago.
In October 2020, Disney Plus added a new content warning that appears as a slate prior to several older movies on the service that contain racist depictions, including “Dumbo,” “Peter Pan,” “Swiss Family Robinson,” “The Aristocats,” “Fantasia,” “The Jungle Book” and “Lady and the Tramp.”
“This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures,” the advisory label says in part. “These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together.”
At the time, Disney Plus blocked those titles from being accessed in the service’s Kids Profile, which is restricted to G-rated films and television shows rated TV-7Fv.

Some “90 Day Fiancé” fans are definitely not signing up for Discovery+.
The beef seems to stem from the fact that certain “90 Day” content is being moved to the new pay streaming service, which costs $4.99 per month with ads or $6.99 for no commercials.
“Sorry I can’t afford your Bs complete crap that we now have to pay for a show that We The Fans made popular all these years. It’s a kick in the face and dirty,” a Twitter user named Sherry Ells posted. “It’s a big fat no.”
If the words don’t make Ells’ stance clear, her angry-face emoji and “American Idol” Gif drove the point home. You can see that — and posts from a few other unhappy campers — at the bottom of this story.
Among its exclusive “90 Day” content, Discovery+ gets “The Other Way Strikes Back!” and three new “90 Day Fiancé” series. Below are those show details,...

Running a film festival every July does not make for getting June and July's columns out on time. The good news is that June is done and ....drumroll.....so is July (which will go up next week). August will publish on time at the end of August and all will be right with the world. In the meantime find, herein, brief defenses of the much maligned John Carter and Sherlock Holmes Game of Shadows, listen as I celebrate the Three Stooges release in a massive box set, and wonder at the thrills of Breaking Bad, Deliverance, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Miss Minoes, and vintage Clint. The Three Stooges: The Ultimate Collection DVD I never bothered collecting the Three Stooges box sets as they were released. They always seemed like...

AMSTERDAM -- The Dutch branch of Warner Home Video is testing the electronic sale of films in an effort to battle illegal downloading. Through January, customers of local Internet provider @Home can download Warner Bros. titles for 6-12 ($7-$14) to their PC. The films are protected against copying. Ruud Lamers, director of Warner Home Video Benelux, said Wednesday that the move was an important step in fighting piracy. "For Warner, legal digital distribution of our product is vital for the future of our company. It could create a new business," he said. Initially, Warner Home Video will offer some 50 titles, including the Harry Potter films, romantic comedies and action films, as well as such local productions as Yes Nurse! No Nurse! and Minoes. For the download-to-own test, under the banner of MoviePlus, Warner has teamed with Keeno, the biggest Dutch supplier of Internet sell-through movies, with a 6,000-title library.
