Screen veteran Lauren Bacall has balked at suggestions Nicole Kidman is an acting "legend" - preferring instead to dub the Australian beauty a "beginner". During an interview on British TV show GMTV yesterday morning, Bacall, 79, became irritated when the 37-year-old Oscar winner was described as "a legend". Cutting off interviewer Jenni Falconer in mid-sentence, Bacall blurted, "She's not a legend. She's a beginner. What is this 'legend'? She can't be a legend at whatever age she is. She can't be a legend, you have to be older." Key Largo star Bacall, former wife of Humphrey Bogart, features as Kidman's mother in the controversial new movie Birth, and insists she and the statuesque redhead have a good relationship. She says, "I love working with a young actress. Nicole and I worked together on Dogville and we were friends when we started this. That laid the groundwork for our fabulous relationship on screen and off."

Lars Von Trier and Lauren Bacall fell out on the set of arthouse film Dogville because the Hollywood icon refused to turn the volume on her TV set down. The Danish director struggled to get to sleep at night with Bacall's blaring TV coming up through his floorboards. Dogville star Paul Bettany reveals, "Lars lived above her in the hotel and she would turn the TV up very loud and go to sleep and leave it on all night and Lars couldn't sleep. This argument erupted one night at dinner when she said, 'You know if you've got such a problem with it you should go home now and get some sleep because I'm coming home and I'm turning my TV on and it's going to be as loud as ever.'"

British actress Catherine Zeta-Jones is still smarting over losing out on the lead role in Moulin Rouge to Oscar winner Nicole Kidman. The Chicago beauty is reportedly intensely jealous of flame-haired Nicole and has recently changed management in a bid to replicate the Dogville star's well- respected career. And Hollywood insiders put Catherine's envy of the former Mrs Tom Cruise down to a rivalry stemming back to Baz Luhrmann's 2001 musical extravaganza. One source tells Page Six, "Baz Luhrmann tested Catherine, Nicole, and Renee Zellweger for the lead. Catherine really wanted it, but Nicole got it." Kidman went on to win a Golden Globe for the role as Satine and then continued her success by claiming an Oscar for The Hours and working on acclaimed epic Cold Mountain. Zeta-Jones also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in Chicago and has recently signed on for the sequel to 1998 swashbuckler The Mask Of Zorro.
