Some may disagree, but I think there's something pretty cool about Toronto's mayor David Miller coming out to declare how proud he is of Atom Egoyan's new erotic thriller "Chloe." Of course, Miller was more likely taking pride in the depiction of his fair city than the film itself, which opens with Amanda Seyfried putting on a lacy black brassiere and never looks back. Egoyan has never shied away from the erotic -- it's the thrills part that has eluded his work for mainstream audiences, and when we meet Catherine (Julianne Moore) at the start of "Chloe," she, too, is dissatisfied.
As a locally prestigious gynecologist, Catherine is smart and sophisticated, but in a foretelling scene, she informs a patient that orgasms are "just a series of muscle contractions." When her husband (Liam Neeson) fails to return home for a surprise birthday party she has planned for him, Catherine »

Director Maria Beatty last appeared in Filmmaker in 2002 when she interviewed Erin Cressida Wilson about her screenplay for Steve Shainberg's Secretary, and since then we've been hearing about her plans for a mainstream narrative feature. Now, reports Lauren Wissot in a "sneak peek" at The House Next Door, Beatty has finished Bandaged, which is executive produced by Abel Ferrara. From Wissot, an excerpt: Bandaged is S&M filmmaker Maria Beatty’s foray into the indie mainstream – if one could call a flick best described as Mädchen in Uniform meets The English Patient meets Eyes Without A Face “mainstream.” Fittingly, none other than Abel Ferrara is serving as executive producer, though it just as easily could have been David Cronenberg... »

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country)
Q: I've been feeling Lost a lot lately, mostly because I'm completely enamored with one of their new characters, Daniel Faraday, played by a very unique actor, Jeremy Davies. Can you tell me anything gay about Jeremy Davies? Anything at all? - Lindsey, New York
A: Hmmm, well, I can tell you that Davies, who first made a splash in the terrific indie hit Spanking the Monkey (1994), has made a name for himself playing nervous losers and misfits, in movies such as Secretary (2002), Solaris (2002), The Locusts (1997), and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Some of these characters could, in a certain light, from a certain angle, by certain people, be read as “maybe, possibly gay.”
Davies also played a drama student in HBO’s TV production of The Laramie Project, about the murder of Matthew Shepard, »

Missed previous episodes? The Hollywood Historian in me was busy last year. See: 1995 , 1996, 1997, 1998 , 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.
With the annual Vanity Fair "Hollywood" issue about to debut for 2009 -- I'm guessing we see the new cover in less than two weeks (Update: the new cover has been leaked and Vanity Fair has chucked their traditional photo shoot *sniffle* for the millionth magazine cover featuring President Obama), let's briefly return to our Vanity Fair retrospectives. "Send in the Gowns" was the title of 2004's photo shoot and they returned to the first year's game plan of glamour girls. The cover was more crowded though, bringing us an unlucky 13. But who was this cover unlucky for?
Maybe all of them, with the exception of Maggie Gyllenhaal (hurrah) and Hilary Swank (known affectionately around these parts as Beelzebub), who was just 11 months away from her second Oscar. Vanity Fair had gotten less daring in their cover »

Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays The Comedian in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, will reunite with Hilary Swank in The Resident, a thriller from director Antti J. Jokinen. The two previously shared the screen in P.S. I Love You. The story centers on a young doctor (Swank) who moves into a loft in Brooklyn where mysterious occurrences lead her to suspect that she is not alone in her home. Jokinen will make his feature directing debut from a script he co-wrote with Robert Orr (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans). Erin Cressida Wilson (Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus, Secretary) recently turned in a rewrite. There is a lot of really bizarre S & M in the ‘The Secretary’, and moreover there is nudity and general freakiness. You’d be hard-pressed (I hope) to watch this movie with your mother in the room. I’m telling you that at the beginning so that those who feel it necessary can leave the room now. Let’s face it, I don’t care what your schedule says, you might be in the wrong room, and there’s no shame in that. There is no trick, or so they say, in standing up for me when you know I’m right. I can get anyone to do that. The trick is standing up for me when you know I’m wrong. ‘The Secretary’ is about as close as you can come to a movie with only two people in it without going all the way over to ‘My Dinner »

Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan is certainly tackling all sides of the relationship spectrum. In June of last year, word hit that he would film a love triangle called Seven Wonders -- one that would follow a woman on the rebound who gets involved with a commercial director and her boyfriend. While there hasn't been any word on the film since, Variety now reports that he's getting busy with another film -- Chloe.
Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, and Amanda Seyfried are set to star in the feature, which sounds a whole heck of a lot different than Seven Wonders. Instead of sexuality-defying sex amidst the Seven Wonders of the World, Moore will play a successful doctor who thinks that her husband (Neeson) is cheating. To find out if she's right, the doc cuts out the skeezy detective middle man (that spurned wives usually use in cinematic cheating scenarios) and hires an escort (Seyfried) herself, »
