Not as funny as Edna or Sir Les
gut-626 July 2004
This is simply a filmed version of Humphries' stage show of his Sandy Stone character. Sandy sits static in his wheelchair on a bare set, clutching his hot water bottle and lisping his monologue sending up the banality and small-mindedness of 1950's Australia. If this material sounds a little past its prime, you're right. I still got a few laughs out of it, but it's not a must see. Compared to Edna and Sir Les, Sandy is Humphries' least funny and most dated character. I suspect this show was filmed as part of Barry's retirement of the character from his stage show. But I'm still glad they captured for posterity one of Australia's greatest comic writers and performers.
