On Monday, October 5, shooting commenced on Exorcismus, the latest fear film to come out of Spain’s Filmax studios. As with so many Spanish genre productions of the last decade, this one is also directed by a relative newcomer to feature filmmaking, Manuel Carballo (taking over for originally slated Luis de la Madrid). And in common with most of the company's previous horror movies (such as Arachnid, Dagon, Darkness, The MacHinist and Beyond Re-animator), the movie is being filmed with a multinational cast in English, on locations in and around the city of Barcelona.
The cast includes Resident Evil: Apocalypse’s Sophie Vavasseur (pictured), Richard Felix from Filmax’s Fragile, which still has yet to see U.S. release, Hellraiser stalwart Doug Bradley and the first Resident’s Stephen Billington. The movie has already been presold to a dozen countries, including Mexico, Italy, Brazil, Poland, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. Most

Talking [Rec] 2 with Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza

Surely, one of the biggest independent horror success stories of 2007 was the film [Rec], from writer/director team Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza. This small title (with reports claiming it was made for a mere 1.5 million Euros) ended up a massive hit in their home country of Spain. It was released around the world soon after to similar acclaim and success. In the Us, the film was quickly snapped up by Sony Picture’s Screen Gems division and put on the studio shelf before being remade in English the following year under the title of Quarantine (only Balagueró has seen the American remake, and claims the experience of watching it was so strange that he couldn’t form any opinion of it). So, while the official North American DVD of the original [Rec] has only recently been released here, in Spain, its follow-up, [Rec] 2 (see our review here), has already been completed.

Attendance was down by 30 percent at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Not surprising, considering the recession still biting and Euro exchange rates keeping prices along the Croisette at ridiculously expensive levels. Yet the number of high-profile genre films in the Official Competition was a bonus for those more used to finding the most controversial entries up for distributor grabs in the Market section. While Park Chan-wook’s Thirst and Gaspar Noe’s Enter The Void certainly had their followers, with Terry Gilliam’s out-of-competition The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus a similar hot ticket, the two biggest stories were Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist.
Cinema saves the world in Tarantino’s disjointed, history-bending homage to war movies, which takes its misspelled name—but very little else—from Enzo Castellari’s 1978 Italian cult exploiter. Divided into chapters, each highlighting a movie style like Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns,

Jaume Balagueró Preps Flatmate

First off, everyone who really loves horror needs to own an all-region DVD player (you can get a decent one for around $100 on Amazon!). That way, when foreign films like Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s terrifying [Rec] come out (and the American remake has Already opened), you can be smug about having already seen the better version (in my opinion) first.
Now comes word, from the folks at Aullidos, that Balagueró, who soloed on the creepy Darkness, starring “True Blood”’s Anna Paquin, is prepping another horror film, Flatmate. According to sources at the Cannes Film Festival, a very large poster has been seen at the Filmax booth in Cannes but any flyers that may have been handed out gave very little information as to the plot. There are rumors that the $16 million English-language project, written by [Rec] producer Alberto Marini and set in New York City, will revolve around a ghost or haunting.

Barcelona-based mini-major Filmax Entertainment is reuniting with Spanish horror director Jaume Balaguero (Darkness, Fragile), for the English-language horror thriller Flatmate, according to Variety.
Flatmate budget will be around E12 million ($16 million). The film will be set in New York and is scheduled to shoot later this year with an international cast, Filmax announced Tuesday at Cannes.
Alberto Marini, who co-write Balaguero's dark-humored 2006 horror TV movie To Let, wrote the script.
