Only a few years after the death of the so-called Yorkshire Ripper, the true-crime series The Long Shadow, premiering on Sundance Now and AMC+ on Thursday, March 21, presents the “definitive depiction of the desperate five-year hunt” for the serial killer as his killing spree continued. That investigation was also the subject of the recent Netflix docuseries The Ripper, but if you don’t know the story already — and you don’t mind spoilers for The Long Shadow’s cat-and-mouse manhunt — read on for the terrible backstory. The Yorkshire Ripper was the press’ appellation for Peter Sutcliffe, an English serial killer who died at age 74 in 2020. Per The Guardian, a spokesperson for Boris Johnson said that the United Kingdom’s then-prime minister’s thoughts were “with those who lost their lives, the survivors, and with the families and the friends of Sutcliffe’s victims.” Brian Booth, the chairman of the West Yorkshire Police Federation,...

Paul Giamatti is one of the most highly respected actors working in the industry today, and he’s also quite prolific, with over 115 screen credits to his name. Last night, he won a Golden Globe for his performance in the excellent comedy / drama film The Holdovers – and during a red carpet interview at the event, he revealed there’s one area where he feels his career is lacking: he hasn’t worked on enough horror projects.
Asked if there’s a genre he would love to work in, Giamatti answered, “Horror. I’d like to do more horror. I love horror.” When asked what his favorite horror movie is, he replied, “Oh, that’s a very tricky question. I like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre a lot. I love horror. Love it!” When the interviewer was a bit shocked and appalled that Giamatti is such a Chainsaw fan, Giamatti stood up for it: “Great movie!

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" remains one of the great TV shows, at least in part because of its supporting characters. The series boasted a supporting cast that became as popular and beloved as the titular slayer herself. Whether it's the Scoobies, David Boreanez's Angel, or the hugely-popular character that was originally supposed to be killed off early, Spike (James Marsters), one of the series' great strengths was the fact that its central character was, at least by the series' end, essentially one of many protagonists.
"Buffy" debuted on the WB back in 1997, but by 1999 Angel had proven popular enough to get his own spin-off, with "Angel" airing on the same network that year. In that first season of the spin-off show, Buffy's former beau is joined by Eliza Dushku's Faith, another slayer who was "called" following the death of Kendra, yet another slayer "called" after Buffy temporarily died in season one.

It’s raining the Bard.
In the wake of “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight and “Happy Valley” star Sarah Lancashire’s recently announced series on William Shakespeare, another production with the Bard as topic has revealed some of its cast.
Conspiracy drama series “The Rosy Cross: The Rebels who wrote Shakespeare,” being brought to the screen by Lasse Hallberg, executive producer of Netflix series “Lilyhammer,” explores the controversial Shakespeare authorship debate. The cast includes Stephen Campbell Moore, Romario Simpson (“Granite Harbour”), Samuel Barnett (“The History Boys”), co-producer Ed Hughes and Jonny Weldon (“House of the Dragon”).
The series is based on research claiming to identify the real and diverse underground writing group of men and women who secretly crafted the plays under the pseudonym of William Shakespeare, led by the great English philosopher Francis Bacon. The show follows a shadowy order of diverse freedom fighters from all walks of life...

I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."
Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a great one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each.
"AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's "Castle Rock," to Syfy's "Channel Zero." Before "AHS," you'd have to...

In our first ever trip to Collision, Den of Geek teamed up with DC Comics and Webtoon to chat about the future of web, digital, and print comics, as well as how the mediums and publishers are bringing new readers to every aspect of the comics marketplace. I was lucky enough to be asked to present our Collision Fest panel with DC Editor-in-Chief, Marie Javins, and Head of Content at WebToon, David Lee.
It was a great chat that spanned the gauntlet of how the companies are creating a two-way street between webcomics and the comic shop with titles like Wayne Family Adventures, Vixen: NYC, and the recently released Zatanna and the Ripper. We were also excited to reveal the release dates of new Webtoon DC collaborations like Zatanna and the Ripper and the upcoming Red Hood and the Outlaws.

Gold Rush producer Raw Television has secured its first commission from Netflix — a three-part documentary on a man who went viral for killing kittens and was later convicted of murdering a Chinese student in 2012.
The All3Media-owned indie, which made Emmy-nominated Three Identical Strangers last year, is producing Don’t F**k With Cats: Hunting An Internet Killer, which will premiere on Netflix on December 18.
It tells the story of how a group of amateur online sleuths launched a manhunt for Luka Magnotta, who gained attention for posting a video of himself killing two kittens. Encouraged by his growing notoriety, the Canadian later murdered Chinese student Jun Lin in grisly circumstances.
Don’t F**k With Cats is directed by Mark Lewis, who said: “What is so mind-blowing for me about this documentary series is that it plays out like a real thriller,...

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Fmv games, Wales Interactive have released some thoroughly enjoyable games recently with The Bunker and Late Shift and I also played the mystery game Contradiction which although flawed was an enjoyable experience. With The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker, despite its plus points, I found myself wearying of the limitations of the genre and couldn’t work out if I was just expecting too much or if I was just burned out from playing too many similar games on the trot.
The mystery that forms the backbone of the game is that one of Dr Dekker’s patients has seemingly murdered him and you are the replacement therapist who has to not only try to solve his murder but also cure his patients along the way. The game plays out through several chapters which are split into days, on each...

A.J. Cook is glad to be back where many fans feel she belongs.
After being let go from her role as FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit sleuth Jennifer "Jj" Jareau, the actress was brought back to CBS' long-running Wednesday crime drama "Criminal Minds" for its current season. With the show's seventh round nearing its end, and repeats shown regularly on both A&E Network and Ion, Cook feels as if she never left ... almost.
"Because of all that has happened in the past year, there's a huge sense of pride and accomplishment there," she reflects. "I'm happy to see the long way that Jj has come. I always think back to the first episode, and I don't even know who that character is anymore.
"She's grown so much, and we've watched her grow up on-screen in a way," Cook adds. "I feel like I've done a lot of growing up in...
