Jackson Kids Save the Day

9 November 2009 5:53 AM, PST | TMZ | See recent TMZ news »

Meddling kids and Scooby Doo go hand-in-hand -- so it makes total sense that Michael Jackson's kids helped save a dog named Scooby Roo.As we told you last month, Prince and Paris Jackson saw Scooby on the news and decided to help out. Well it worked -- Scooby was outfitted with a custom cart this weekend. Fuzzy Rescue, the organization that rescued Scooby, tells us it will take about 1-2 weeks for him »

Blu-ray Review: Night at the Museum 2

6 November 2009 3:09 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Night at the Museum 2 is exactly what a Hollywood sequel needs to be. Bigger, louder, filled with more famous faces and almost the same story as the first. It is on its way to eclipsing the success of the first and it hits Blu-ray and DVD next week.

Ben Stiller gathers his Natm cohort as they take their mix of slapstick and Scooby Doo to Washington D.C. where the Smithsonian archives are bought to life by the power of Ahkmenrah’s Tablet. Shawn Levy’s family friendly Night at the Museum grossed nearly $600m worldwide so a sequel was fairly inevitable and in these risk aversive climate the Battle of the Smithsonian needed only to rekindle the comedic chaos and broad dramatic strokes of the original to succeed.

It’s no surprise that the sequel does not stray from this path, and this is a blessing and a curse. »

Faris, Aykroyd, and Timberlake in ‘Yogi Bear’

6 November 2009 12:55 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd, and Justin Timberlake are in negotiations for Warner Bros’ live-action/CGI hybrid feature Yogi Bear.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Faris will play Rachel, a nature documentary filmmaker shooting Yogi and Boo-Boo for her next project.  Though her last movie was voice work for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Faris’ character will be a live-action performance.

Aykroyd will lend the voice of Yogi Bear, the picnic basket-stealing menace to Jellystone Park.  Timberlake will provide the vocals for Boo-Boo, his bow-tied sidekick.  Both bears are expected to remain pantless.  No word on which lucky actor gets to play the Park Ranger.  Is Jason Lee available for a paycheck?

WB is planning to shoot it in New Zealand next month with director Eric Bravig (Journey to the Center of the Earth).  I bet you can’t wait to hear the range Timberlake exhibits in this one.  Shrek the Third »

Aykroyd, Faris, Jt in Talks for 'Yogi Bear'

6 November 2009 12:06 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If these things lived in a vacuum, it might be a different story. On its own, there's nothing wrong or inherently evil about making a movie based on The Flintstones or Scooby Doo or even Rocky & Bullwinkle. But when you add them all up (and pay attention to the success rate), you start to get a bad taste in your mouth. That's probably why I was so opposed to this update initially.

I enjoyed Yogi Bear as a kid, although it wasn't an all-time favorite. And because it has a big presence in the pop culture firmament, a movie version isn't a stretch. It just seems that way since we've been inundated by so many of them already. Entertainment Weekly has some casting updates, and I'm not really thrilled about those, either. »

Fear this: Dan Aykroyd as Yogi Bear

6 November 2009 8:04 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

I could make another joke about how Hollywood is out of ideas, but why bother? However, as further proof of the concept, a live-action/CGI Yogi Bear movie is in the works based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon from way back when. Dan Aykroyd will be lending his voice for Yogi and Justin Timberlake will be the voice of Boo Boo. Did anyone else just feel a cold shiver down their spine?

Anna Faris will also be in the movie as a documentary filmmaker. I like Anna Faris even when she's in crap movies, but I don't think her presence is going to make me like this one.

I'm sorry to say that this movie will likely do well and the kids will eat up. Look at Hollywood's history of similar movies (most of which have actually spawned sequels): The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, Garfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks, »

Movie Poster of the Week: "Hausu"

6 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

I wasn't intending to feature a third horror movie poster in a row for this column, but then I saw Hausu, and, more importantly, I saw this poster.

Made in 1977, Hausu (or just plain House) is a cult Japanese comic-horror film never previously released in the Us and directed with bonkers abandon by Nobuhiko Obayashi. Obayashi, who now has some 35 features to his name, started out making experimental Super8 films in the 1960s (you can see one of them here) which led to a career making commercials, often with American movie stars. (His priceless Charles Bronson commercials for the cologne Mandom can be seen on YouTube). He is best known in the U.S., if at all, for 1989’s Beijing Watermelon which played at New Directors/New Films in 1990 (even though it was his 22nd film) and which Vincent Canby described in The New York Times as “in every way a rather ordinary conventional movie. »

Faris meets Yogi Bear

5 November 2009 2:19 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Anna Faris might not have another Scary Movie in her future, but it looks like there's another franchise following her fine form. Faris will be the primary human in Warner Bros.' live-action/CG-animated Yogi Bear movie (a la Scooby Doo, Alvin And The Chipmunks, etc., etc.). She'll play a nature documentarian who pays a visit to Jellystone Park, only to encounter a mischievous talking bear with a fondness for pic-a-nic baskets and neckwear. The studio wants Dan Aykroyd to lend his voice to... »

Shawn Levy and the Berenstain Bears

3 November 2009 7:31 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Walden Media has picked up the rights to the Berenstain Bears with Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum, The Pink Panther) as a producer.  No word on whether Levy will direct, though his next project is likely Real Steel with Hugh Jackman.

According to THR, the plan is to make a live-action movie that also mixes in CGI.  That seems to be the trend these days thanks to Garfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Scooby Doo.  Now we’re getting the Berenstain Bears and Marmaduke.

There are over 250 Berenstain Bear books in the series originating in 1962 with Stan and Jan Berenstain.  The morality stories help young readers deal with life situations like the birds and the bees (pictured right), bullies, and eating too much junk food.  There hasn’t been a bear family this boring since Goldilocks’ adventures in small, medium, and large sized bowls, chairs, and beds.

Plastic Man – The Complete Collection DVD

3 November 2009 4:18 PM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

One of the greatest Saturday morning cartoons ever, and the forerunner of countless camp and/or satirical efforts, Plasticman, is now available in a 4-disc, 35 episode complete collection. A superhero like no other, with possible exception of Freakazoid!, Plasticman and his unique adventures are a treasure of the odd world of vintage television. With girlfriend Penny, sidekick Hula Hula, and the Plastijet, there is no danger too great, and no goofy barb too small. You never can tell what incredible feat of stretchitude is in store for you next, and don't forget the short-segment format that includes Mighty Man & Yukk, Fangface and Fangpuss, and more. They don't make them like this anymore, and the combination of superhero theory mixed with Scooby Doo-esque zaniness is just as fun as ever, and truly brilliant wacky adventures are as sure a win for kids today as they ever were. »

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: It's the procedural playoffs -- sweeps month!

It’s sweeps month! It’s sweeps month! Craziness will happen! Casting will be stunty! Networks will actually try! Yes, Beatniks, it’s that magical time of year when whatever the actual televised content on procedurals—good or bad—it is highly unlikely to be indifferent. Those networks need our eyeballs, so if they want ’em, they'd better be willing to throw us a CSI triple crossover, resurrect long-lost castmembers, and double the Deschanel quotient! (Oh wait, no, Zooey’s not popping up on Bones till Dec. 10. Shoot. That’s one bit of holiday stunt casting I do approve of, »

Halloween Special Part 1: Jason Voorhees vs Me

31 October 2009 4:44 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

To bring us into Halloween I thought I would do a daring deed and take on Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger in a no holds bared face off (literally) where I have watched the entire back catalogue of their films to determine once and for all who is champion slasher

The three killers have haunted us through our childhoods with each horror legend bringing us movies which have completely terrified and equally bemused us with poor sequels and terrible plots

Beware pictures of blood, gore, slight nudity and terrible acting to follow.

I begin with Part one of the Halloween Special and start with Friday the 13th and Jason Voorhees, one of the most iconic horror villains of all time sporting the classic hockey mask and machete, Jason Voorhees has become a vastly popular member of the horror circle and would be up there with Dracula, Frankstein’s »

‘The Gloomers’ Draws Hanna Barbera Style To Web

28 October 2009 11:55 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

IImagine if Eeyore, Oscar the Grouch, Scrooge McDuck, and Grumpy from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs were related. Throw in a dash of the Addam's Family and you'd be at a good place to start understanding the concept behind The Gloomers. With the tagline "No matter how bad your day has been, The Gloomers day is always worse.", the family greets you with slick flash-animation, a catchy theme song, and the promise that this won't be all gloom and doom...there is a lot of laughs to be had as well. Behind The Gloomers are some veteran broadcast TV vets. Charles Mechem, the former CEO of Taft Broadcasting, which owned animation studio Hanna Barbera from 1967 until 1990 serves as the outfit's 'Chairman.' His son Dan serves as CEO and penning the series is senior writer Neal Barbera, son of the late Joe Barbera. Neal often wrote or co-wrote episodes »

The 12th British Independent Film Award nominations were announced: Fish Tank earned 8 nominations including Best Film and Best Director, Duncan Jones's Moon claimed 7 nominations including Best Film. An Education, In The Loop and Nowhere Boy share 6 nominations. What if Spike Lee had directed Where The Wild Things Are instead of Spike Jonze. What a difference a last name can make. 50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. »

[TV] Plastic Man: The Complete Collection

27 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Apparently the Super Friends set Warner Brothers released a little while back was encouraging enough to warrant further plunging into the depths of their animation vault. Now, you can complement the other set with The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show, a now-marginalized character in the DC canon. The more avid comic book fans amongst us will recognize the red, yellow and black spandex clad hero, but for the newcomers amongst us he’s essentially the original Mr. Fantastic, he stretches into any number of shapes to fit the needs of the moment. Debuting almost exactly twenty years before the Fantastic Four, Plastic Man (Michael Bell) has a more comical twist with villains like the plant-loving Weed or a militant clam and friends helping him along the way like Hula Hula (Joe Baker) and the “plastic elastic loverboy’s” oft neglected girlfriend, Penny (Melendy Britt).

Visually, many people will find Plastic »

James Gunn’s ‘Humanzee!’ Premieres on Blip, Too Racy for XBox Live

13 October 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

James Gunn seems to be digging the web series world these days. The Scooby-Doo screenwriter is following up on his successful porn flick satire series PG Porn, with the release today of an even racier series, Humanzee! The offbeat scripted comedy was shot back in 2008 and was planned to head to XBox Live, until someone over at Microsoft pulled the plug due to content concerns. Did they really not know what they signed up for when tapping Gunn? First off, we have to throw out the Nsfw warning on the first episode (above), mostly for f-bombs, not nudity. The show itself feels like a live action cartoon sitcom, complete with a laugh track pushing us through the quick setups and reversals. Gunn's description of what it's about is just too good to paraphrase: Humanzee! is the story of myself and my human-chimp hybrid son, appropriately named "Humanzee" (played by my brother, »

With their latest album, Somewhere On The Other Side Of Nowhere (listen here) released today, our coverage of the recent Powerman 5000 music video shoot concludes with an interview with Spider One...

On the set of Powerman 5000's video 'Supervillain', Spider One looks like a life-size action figure from a Japanese superhero cartoon. With his spiky hair, gauntlets and shirt, he stands out in a crowd.

"Spider is one of a kind," smiles wardrobe girl Autumn Steed. "Spider does his own thing, he's already styled!" Spider One laughs and gestures toward his chest emblem. "This shirt was a hand-sewn gift from a fan."

Pat Jankiewicz/Fango: You and Nicolas Cage both named yourselves after the Marvel Comic Luke Cage: Powerman...

Ellen Page to be Rainn Wilson’s ‘Super’ Sidekick

After her appearance Kitty Pryde in 1989s X-Men: The Last Stand, it seemed that it was only a matter of time before Ellen Page returned to the world of superheroes. During an interview to promote her latest flick, Whip It, Page revealed exclusively to MTV that she has signed on to play Rainn Wilson’s sidekick in the upcoming comedy, Super.

As Page explains, Super is about a “character (Wilson) whose ex-girlfriend gets into a sticky situation and he becomes a superhero, essentially, to solve the problem. I play a slightly eccentric girl who works at a comic book store who really wants to be his sidekick.”

So, what should fans expect from said sidekick, especially one of Page’s caliber? A tricked out motorcycle? Kung Fu moves? Witty repartee?

“Let’s just say there might be some skintight yellow suits,” she revealed. “I don’t know for sure. Who knows what will happen? »
