If there’s one Great British institution that comes in for some flack on a regular basis, it’s the good old BBC. While to many that should just be ‘the old BBC’, with a new series of Strictly Come Dancing (I’m not that big on brevity) looming large, the snipers should be silenced, at least until Christmas. But as this is only a temporary measure, what’s the one thing that the broadcasting giant can count on all year round? Why, Mother Nature of course.
Whether it’s a tiger hunting, a flock of flamingos, or something a bit closer to home like fox clubs at play, these are the things that go some way to justifying the licence fee. Yes, the licence fee; that bone of contention that always leaves the general public feeling a little, well, ripped-off. One failed sitcom after another, overpaid presenters, plus the sporting calendar dwindling every year,...

Prince Charles had a scary run-in with a deer in Scotland, according to a new report. The prince was said to be shaken but unhurt in the accident on Balmoral Estate, which was reported Thursday in The Daily Mirror. The newspaper said Charles's Audi A4 Allroad was "badly damaged" and that the fate of the deer is unknown. The prince's office at Clarence House declined to comment. Today Charles is in Longueval, France, honoring New Zealand troops who fought in Wwi's Battle of the Somme. • Want to keep up with the latest royals coverage? Recently I sat down with a filmmaker who had a good run in the ’70s and still has a bit of a cult following. He asked that I meet him at The Red Deer Diner, at night. The owner would keep it open after closing time. Kids in Halloween costumes trickled out as I came in. There was Pocahontas and GI Joe. Casper ran into me, apologized, kept going. The filmmaker was already there, sitting on a stool at the counter. I joined him. We both drank black coffee. He said: “I’ll tell you what the problem is. I’ll tell […]...

Screen Australia today announced it will invest $5 million in 13 documentary projects. The National Documentary Program has given the green light to three series and a one-off documentary, Welcome to Puntland, which follows the plight of a group of Somali Australians who return to their homeland in hope of repairing the fractured state. Produced for the Sbs by Andrew Ogilvie and Claire Jager, the project comes from writer/director Victoria Pitt and director/camera operator Tim Wise. Once Upon a Time in Carlton comes after the success of Sbs.s Once Upon a Time in Cabramatta and, subsequently, Once Upon a Time in Punchbowl, which is currently in production. The series, produced by Sue Clothier, will delve into 70 years of Italian migrant history in Carlton, Melbourne. The second series of art + soul will build on its success, offering new insights into contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, art and culture,...

Joe Hildebrand will return to Australian TV screens in 2013 with a new factual series taking aim at Australia’s belief it is ‘the lucky country.”
The Daily Telegraph journo reunites with Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder, the team behind his previous series Dumb Drunk & Racist for a six part series to air on ABC2.
The series is one of 13 documentary projects announced to receive funding from Screen Australia. The $5m agency investment is expected to trigger nearly $15m worth of production.
Produced by Michael Cordell and Toni Malone, and directed by Ivan O’Mahoney, “The Daily Telegraph’s rebel-rousing columnist travels the lucky country, shattering our myths, bursting our bubbles and slaughtering some sacred Australian cows,” according to a press release.
Dumb Drunk & Racist delivered a decent audience for ABC2, it’s debut episode rating 266,000.

The first round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft took place in Pittsburgh yesterday and it brought with it a lot of surprises and shocks. Even the first overall pick, which the Oilers eventually used on stud forward Nail Yakupov, was subject to some pre-draft speculation.
The common theme of the first round, however, was undoubtedly defencemen. Eight of the first ten selections were blueliners, and this has some analysts comparing the 2012 draft pool to the 2008 edition, in which notable stars Drew Doughty, Alex Pietrangelo and Tyler Myers were drafted.
Below are the complete first round results:
Edmonton -Nail Yakupov – Rw – Russia Columbus -Ryan Murray – D – Canada Montreal -Alex Galchenyuk – C – United States/Russia NY Islanders – Griffin Reinhart – D – Canada Toronto – Morgan Rielly – D – Canada Anaheim – Hampus Lindholm – D – Sweden Minnesota – Mathew Dumba – D – Canada Pittsburgh -Derrick Pouliot – D – Canada Winnipeg Jets – Jacob Trouba – D – United States Tampa Bay – Slater...

Sometimes it pains me to say when a film is an unwatchable mess. Films like French Immersion, the directorial debut of Quebec-based producer Kevin Tierney (Bon Cop, Bad Cop, The Trotsky, Good Neighbours), has an incredible amount of talent in front of the camera and behind it. It is supposed to be a comedy about the differences between English and French speaking Canada, but instead it’s a soul-sucking train wreck full of punchlines so misguided they would make Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy think twice. Sickeningly unfunny and dreadfully “Canadian,” Tierney’s film strikes out on almost every conceivable level.
There’s enough plot and quirky characters in French Immersion to sustain a year’s worth of television pilots, but Tierney tries to pack every half baked idea he has into a single film. The film deals with five English speakers forced to enter into an intense...

As a way of celebrating this year's nominees for the Spirit Awards in the weeks leading up to the ceremony, we reached out to as many as we could in an effort to better understand what went into their films, what they've gotten out of the experience, and where they've found their inspiration, both in regards to their work and other works of art that might've inspired them from the past year. Their answers will be published on a daily basis throughout February.
Over the past few weeks, Jennifer Lawrence has complained of the cold, cinematographer Michael McDonough lamented an unforgiving schedule, and Dale Dickey spoke of the challenge of balancing a chainsaw while on a boat. And these were only a few of the obstacles that were overcome under the watchful eye of Debra Granik to make "Winter's Bone" one of the year's most unforgettable films.
That might sound like needless hyperbole,...

Toronto -- Canadian broadcaster Canwest Global Communications said Thursday that it has retained investment bank Rbc Capital Markets to find a possible buyer for five over-the-air TV stations countrywide.
The TV stations in Montreal, Hamilton, Red Deer, Kelowna and Victoria are part of Canwest Global's E! network, which offers a mix of local and U.S. series in primetime and library programming from the Comcast Entertainment Group's U.S.-based E! Networks as part of its daytime and weekend schedules.
Winnipeg, Manitoba-based Canwest Global said the possible sale of its E1 network will leave it with a parallel Global Television network, which it hopes to integrate with another 13 cable channels that it controls and manages in partnership with Goldman Sachs & Co., and with its digital media assets.
Possible buyers of the E!-branded TV stations, which have been hobbled by a growing advertising slump, include cable giant Rogers Communications, and...

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey!
Q: Both the men on The New Adventures of Old Christine ping my gaydar (and are really cute, but that’s a different issue). Is either gay? – Randy, Lakewood, Co
Clark Gregg (left) and Hamish Linklater with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss
A: Neither Clark Gregg nor Hamish Linklater are gay. Both are married to women — Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Grey in the case of Gregg.
Linklater did play a gay man in 2006 opposite Brothers & Sisters’ Luke Macfarlane (also playing gay) in The Busy World Is Hushed, a play at New York’s Playwrights Horizons. Gregg, meanwhile, played a gay guy on a 2003 episode of Will & Grace.
Q: Mickey Rourke????? Puh-leeeeeze! – Tommy, New Haven, Ct
