The 'Twilight' Craze Hints At A Larger Phenomenon-To-Be: Blockbusters For The Ladies

23 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Let's talk about the insane performance of "New Moon" at the box office this past weekend. It was projected to earn somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 million. That number was doubled once the ticket sales had been counted. Impressive, to say the least.

What's interesting is that, when you look back over the opening weekend box office record-breakers, "New Moon" is sort of the odd man out. Or, more accurately, odd woman out. Look at the list, the franchises represented there: "Star Wars," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Batman," "Indiana Jones"... lots of male-oriented stuff. This isn't to say that only boys can like "Star Wars" or that there aren't a few gender-neutral/family-friendly title-holders -- I'm looking at you "Harry Potter," and you too, "Shrek" -- but the trend definitely seems to favor the boys. That on its own is noteworthy. Dig a little deeper, and some questions start to surface. »

Uncle Bob Martin: Suffer the Little Children

30 October 2009 1:39 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Michael Weldon of "Psychotronic Magazine" praised this movie's awfulness to me almost 30 years ago, and I only caught up with it this week.

The Children concerns the ghastly events that occur after a school bus drives through a noxious cloud of gas...which is exactly how Richard Matheson got The Incredible Shrinking Man going, so it's not a bad start. There are only a few kids on the bus, luckily (I'm surprised the filmmakers got any parents to trust them with their kids -- but then, half the kids in this film have the same last name as the producer). I'm going to have to provide some spoilers here because the movie is so bad and so poorly paced that no one will watch it through without a damn good reason. These kids, though normal looking, become radioactive zombies with an impulse to approach any adults with arms outstretched, begging for hugsies! »

Cameron Diaz in ‘What Women Want’ Sequel

29 October 2009 6:47 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Cameron Diaz is attached to star in What Men Want, a sequel of sorts to 2000’s What Women Want starring Mel Gibson.

Pajiba, who seems to be on fire lately with the exclusives, reports that Diaz is tentatively set for the lead role while the script is completed. Pete Chiarelli (The Proposal) is writing the screenplay.

The Gibson movie, which also starred Helen Hunt, made $374 million worldwide and is still the second largest romantic comedy of all time in the U.S. (behind My Big Fat Greek Wedding).

Though further details are unknown at this point, it will likely be the original’s premise with a little gender-reversal.  Lightning strikes and suddenly Diaz can hear men’s thoughts and understand what they want.  How she’ll be able to leave the house without being greeted by a cacophony of “you” and other lewd ideas remains to be seen.

Jack Black And Michael Cera Go Biblical, An 'Anvil' Gets Dropped And More, In The DVD Report For Tuesday, October 6

6 October 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Last week's major release was a 70-year-old classic, and coincidentally today brings yet another iconic film that's actually two years older. "Snow White" was Disney's first animated feature, and appropriately enough it marks the launch of their new "Diamond Series" Blu-ray line. But blasts from the past aren't the only highlights of the week, as Jack Black and Michael Cera rock it old school in today's DVD Report.

"Year One" combines the talents of mega-producer Judd Apatow and legendary director Harold Ramis for a old-fashioned road trip through the ancient world. Starring Black and Cera as down-on-their-luck cavemen, the film draws together an eclectic cast from the comedy scene, including Paul Rudd, David Cross, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Hank Azaria and many others. "Year One" had an underwhelming response at the box office, but Sony is hoping this Blu-ray and DVD release will bring in new fans. Audio commentary with Raims, Black »

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 10/6

6 October 2009 8:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Year One (Unrated)

The marketing made it look like it was all about Jack Black and Michael Cera as primitive cavemen, when in reality it's very much a Biblical comedy. In either guise, it fails to fire on all cylinders, never igniting into a full-blown laugh romp. Still, Black and Cera display enough rambunctious charm to keep the proceedings moving along nicely. And maybe the unrated edition will restore some much-needed adult-oriented humor. Also on Blu-ray. Rent it.

Imagine That

As I wrote in my review, Eddie Murphy gives a very warm, very funny performance as a stressed-out financial executive trying to be a better parent to his seven-year-old daughter, but the film springs to life only at rare moments, which are surrounded by so much fatty tissue that you fear the movie will die of a heart attack before it huffs and »

Guess Who's the Summer's Biggest Loser?

2 September 2009 8:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Nothing can really compare to the craptacular showing of Zyzzyx Road, the film that brought in a whopping $30. That's no typo -- it didn't bring in $30 million, not even $30 thousand. I'm not sure any film could ever compete with that, except for maybe a For Justin & Kelly sequel, but there is a stinker this summer that comes sort of close.

It was set to be her big comeback. Two films, one she was headlining, and one that she wrote, directed, and starred in. The first made the rounds, but the other didn't go much further than a blog post or two. Figure out who I'm writing about yet? Yes, it's Nia Vardalos and her feature I Hate Valentine's Day. Gordon and the Whale dug into the little feature that couldn't, revealing that after spending $5 million and making well over $200 million on My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Valentine's Day only brought »

Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones is getting more and more buzz! Watch a featurette with the cast discussing the movie, their roles and Susie Salmon, the major character portrayed by Saoirse Ronan (currently ranked #1 in our Top 50 hitlist). I have such high expectation for this movie, and I am quite sure Peter Jackson will deliver. I also expect some amazing performances - especially from Ms. Ronan!

Ask the Flying Monkey! (August 3, 2009)

2 August 2009 6:27 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

Q: Are there any movies aimed at younger audiences that portray romance between gay couples? There are actually a lot of parents like myself who want to show their kids a movie with two people of the same sex falling in love in the fun way they show other kids’ movies. -- Marcy, Tacoma, Wa

A: Have you considered Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild!?

That’s a joke. Seriously. Gays Gone Wild is the raunchiest gay movie I’ve ever seen, and not in a good way.

"This might have been a mistake."

Anyway, I actually love this question. Nothing makes me quite as annoyed as the idea that “gay” is synonymous with “sex” while “heterosexual” is not.

In fact, I love this question so much that I wish I had a better answer. »

New To Theatres This Weekend: Ice Age 3, Public Enemies, I Hate Valentine’s Day

3 July 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Only two major releases are hitting theatres over this holiday long weekend, the first being Michael Mann's Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp, and the other being Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Both will probably make a boatload of cash, but will either of them be able to match Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen? The only limited release this weekend is the second film starring Nia Vardalos this summer, I Hate Valentine's Day. She wrote and directed this one herself, and reteams with My Big Fat Greek Wedding co-star John Corbett. What will you be checking out? Big, Fat Flop Proves Honeymoon's Over

2 July 2009 9:46 PM, PDT | NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news »

Stick a fork in Nia Var dalos. I've been to fu nerals that were a lot more fun than "I Hate Valentine's Day," her second alleged romantic comedy in less than a month.

At least the star of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" shared some of the blame for her most recent dreadful comeback try, "My Life in Ruins," with the writer and director.

This time, as writer-director-star of "Valentine's Day," Vardalos gives new meaning to the term triple threat.

Even bringing back leading man John Corbett from "Mbfgw" doesn't help this outing. »

Film: Review: I Hate Valentine’s Day

2 July 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

A certain level of gimmickry is expected from romantic comedies, a genre that requires obstacles be continually put in the path of true love. Few resort, however, to the desperate measures of I Hate Valentine’s Day, an unspeakable nadir in the career of its writer-director-star, My Big Fat Greek Wedding’s Nia Vardalos. Here Vardalos plays a woman with a romantic philosophy as novel as it is idiotic. She doesn’t believe in relationships or commitment but considers herself something of a love guru. So she’ll go on exactly five dates with prospective suitors, then disappear dramatically before ... »

Judah Friedlander Keeps Truckin'

1 July 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Comedian-turned-actor Judah Friedlander ("Zoolander," "American Splendor") wears a lot of hats, and that's not to say he's bogged down with multiple titles. No, if you're familiar with his stand-up, VH1 appearances -- or most likely, his role as sketch comedy writer Frank Rossitano on NBC's "30 Rock"-- you've seen his endless array of trucker hats with pithy messages on them ("World Champion" being his most recognizable proclamation). Add an oversized pair of thick-rimmed glasses and five o' clock shadow, and you've got the Friedlander look, which has its own methodology, as the Spirit Award nominee (for "Duane Hopwood") would soon school me.

Adding to Friedlander's eclectic résumé is the new indie rom-com "I Hate Valentine's Day," an encore reunion for "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" leads Nia Vardalos and John Corbett. Vardalos makes her directorial debut and stars as a Brooklyn florist with a strict five-date philosophy on romance, and »

Huff Post Review: I Hate Valentine's Day

30 June 2009 1:42 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Who is it that keeps making Nia Vardalos movies? Or is it a sign of impending apocalypse that two such terrible ones have been released in one month? Really, isn't it cheaper just to keep them on the shelf? It seemed unlikely that Vardalos could star in a movie flatter or more desultory than My Life in Ruins. But she's outdone herself with I Hate Valentine's Day, which she not only wrote but directed, in addition to starring. For good luck, apparently, she cast John Corbett -- her love interest in My Big Fat Greek Wedding -- as the male lead. But she could have cast anyone from Brad Pitt to a fencepost and it wouldn't have made a difference. The writing is that flavorless, the directing that inept. The story: Vardalos plays Genevieve, a florist in Brooklyn who has a rule about... »

Chicago – In making a Chicago appearance at the Gabby Awards, which honored prominent Greek Americans, actress Nia Vardalos justifiably follows through on the heritage displayed in her hit “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”

HollywoodChicago.com: You are one of the notable graduates from Chicago’s Second City troupe. What lesson or lessons from those years has sustained you in your career?

Nia Vardalos: There is no crying in comedy (laughs). You’ve got to be tough, and the Windy City sure teaches you that when that wind takes you, push back.
