Director Sacha Gervasi's 2008 documentary feature focusing on the comedic antics of Canadian heavy metal rock band "Anvil", won the 'Distinguished Feature Award', December 4 at the International Documentary Association's annual awards show.

"Anvil!: The Story Of Anvil", from Australian producer Rebecca Yeldham, won over competing features "Food, Inc." and "Mugabe and the White African," both short-listed in the Oscar documentary feature category.

The Ida show was hosted by Ira Glass, host of the TV/radio series "This American Life." In his opening remarks he described a documentary filmmaker as a person who uses "...all the tools and tricks to get an audience to care about something it has no interest in at all."

Then he introduced clips of the best docs of 2009, including Michael Moore's "Capitalism: A Love Story", James Toback's "Tyson" and the 'mock doc' "Bruno".

Motörhead star Lemmy was reportedly found sleeping outside a doorway early this morning after performing a show in Glasgow. The singer was allegedly spotted by a passer-by who was going to work in the Clydeside area of the city. "I came to work and there was a gentleman by my basic entry door to work. I said to him, 'You're cold and wet, would you like a cup of coffee?'" listener Tommy told Rock Radio. "I brought him down a cup of coffee. He said, 'Thank you very much', and introduced (more) »

Chris Jericho, Ted Dibiase, Jr. Highlight A Wrestling-Heavy Day In The Newsroom

18 November 2009 2:03 PM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Here's a strange fact about at least a portion of the staff here at MTV News: Several of us — hip-hop editor Shaheem Reid, rock editor James Montgomery and myself — are big fans of professional wrestling. We all follow it with differing degrees of intensity and all have different taste when it comes to what we like, but give us a hot promo and a cage match and we'll probably walk away smiling. So yesterday was a big day in the Newsroom, as there were a pair of wrestling-related interviews going down (which happily coincided with the WWE's "Raw" show airing live from Madison Square Garden on Monday night).

First, we got a visit from Ted Dibiase, Jr., who sat on the Newsroom couch to talk to Reid about his role in the upcoming film The Marine 2, which will hit DVD and Blu-Ray on December 29. He also talked about the thrill »

Hardware (Review)

9 November 2009 12:41 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

You Can't Stop Progress. Hardware Directed by Richard Stanley In a post-apocalyptic future somewhere in a radioactive desert, terminally ill Moses Baxter (Dylan McDermott) has just returned from scavenging for whatever waste he may find that could be of use to him either back home or for sale. Along his journey he discovers some robotic parts from some unknown android which he brings to his dope-smoking sculptor girlfriend Julie (Stacey Travis) as a Christmas present. She incorporates it into her latest piece, but neither of them is aware that the hardware is actually a robot programmed to kill humans. After settling in and reconnecting following his long absence, their reunion is cut short when the robot awakens, reassembles itself and resumes its original purpose as a government-sponsored population control droid. Despite few similarities, Hardware was dismissed by most as a rip-off of The Terminator. In fact, the film was heavily »

Top Ten Tuesday: Classic Stories That Should Not Be Adapted Again

3 November 2009 10:17 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

While the idea of ceasing the overall usage of adapting stories, classic or otherwise, into feature films is laughable, there are those stories that just should not be touched again.  Whether they have been done so many times that it seems trivial to adapt onto the silver screen or an adaptation has come along that so definitely captures the essence of the story, there are those classic stories that should simply be left alone.  Certainly, there are those stories that we will have left off this list, and some of you may think some of these classic stories deserve another go in the feature film realm.  For now, and in honor of Robert Zemeckis’ adaptation of A Christmas Carol, we give you our 10 classic stories that should Not be adapted ever again.

10. Macbeth

Adapted Roughly 35 Times

MacBeth is perhaps one of the best Shakespeare stories and also one of the most difficult to adapt successfully, »

Hardware (DVD/Blu-ray Review)

30 October 2009 12:39 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

“This is what you want…this is what you get…this is what you want…this is what you get…” Public Image Ltd. chants under the end credits of Richard Stanley’s Hardware. If what you’ve been wanting for the last decade is a worthy disc release of the 1990 sci-fi shocker, what you get from Severin Films’ recently issued two-dvd set and Blu-ray is everything you could imagine, and a few things you probably couldn’t.

First and foremost is a fine 1.85:1 transfer that holds the hyperstylized, vibrantly hued visual scheme (described by Stanley amongst the extras as “rock ’n’ roll lighting”) extremely well, with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio that’s equally aggressive. Stanley’s command of sound and image elevates Hardware above a basic storyline that he freely admits is derivative of any number of past genre films, citing everything from spaghetti Westerns and classic science fiction literature »

Video Game Review: ‘Brutal Legend’ Rocks, But Misses a Few Chords

15 October 2009 10:49 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Video Game Rating: 3.5/5.0

Chicago – Can a game be clever and beautiful to look at but not be fun? EA’s highly anticipated “Brutal Legend” tests this theory with some amazing design, a unique concept, and very funny storytelling, but with actual gameplay that can be remarkably frustrating. To paraphrase something a friend recently said about something else that seems appropriate here, I liked everything about “Brutal Legend” except actually playing it.

The game opens with a prologue that features roadie Eddie Riggs (Jack Black) being crushed by a massive stage prop for a metal show and being whisked off to a fantasy world clearly inspired by the world of metal album covers. From there, you have to use your axe, a guitar with electric powers, and a variety of other music-based fighting skills to help free an enslaved race of people who look vaguely like followers of Judas Priest circa »

'Brutal Legend' Review: Heavy Metal Will Only Get You So Far

13 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Multiplayer | See recent MTV Multiplayer news »

After an extended wait, Rocktober 13 has finally arrived. If you’re reading this, you likely know what that means. After four years, Tim Schafer and the folks at Double Fine Productions have finally finished off the follow-up to their superb-yet-criminally undersold 2005 release, "Psychonauts." "Brutal Legend" is the latest zany creation to spring forth from Schafer’s mind, and it’s a doozy. But does the adventure measure up to the ordeals of Raz and his psychic summer camp buddies?

The Basics

In "Brutal Legend" you are Eddie Riggs (voiced by Jack Black), a roadie of mammoth proportions, both physically and by reputation. And yet for all of Eddie’s superior roadie-ing abilities, he’s destined to live a life in the shadows, working tirelessly to make everyone around him look good. All of that changes when blood touches Eddie's magical belt buckle following an accident on stage. Our roadie hero »

Severin’s Hardware DVD Release Promo featuring Lemmy from Motorhead

7 October 2009 6:04 PM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Ahead of their October 13th DVD & Blu Ray release of Richard Stanley’s 1990 sci-fi epic “Hardware”, the fine folks over at Severin Films have produced a new promo video featuring Lemmy of Motörhead. In the video, Lemmy recreates his cameo role from the movie as a cab driver recalling nostalgic memories from the past as he drives through a now dystopian wasteland. It was the movie that stunned audiences, shocked the MPAA and marked the debut of one of the most uncompromising filmmakers in modern horror. Golden Globe® winner Dylan McDermott (The Practice, Dark Blue) stars as a post-apocalyptic scavenger who brings home a battered cyborg skull for his metal-sculptor girlfriend. But this steel scrap contains the brain of the M.A.R.K. 13, the military’s most ferocious bio-mechancial combat droid. It is cunning, cruel, and knows how to reassemble itself. Tonight, it is reborn…and no flesh shall be spared. »

Metallica Welcome Motörhead's Lemmy To World Tour Kickoff

15 September 2009 2:01 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

While most of the music world was still trying to process the MTV Video Music Awards (and working to parse Kanye West's apology for hijacking Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for Best Female Video), some bands were getting up to business as usual. Road-tested rock veterans Metallica kicked off their "World Magnetic" tour at the Sommet Center in Nashville last night. Metallica have gone theatrical before, memorably constructing a massive stage (which was demolished most every night) during the tours for Load and Reload, but based on their first show, this run will be all about stripped-down production and good old-fashioned Reagan-era shredding. The band relied heavily on the throwback-sounding songs from last year's Death Magnetic, and they proved that they've still got the muscle and brutality to turn a group of unassuming metal fans into an adrenalized, fist-pumping mob.

That's not to say Metallica have completely abandoned their visual sense. »
