Manhattan, Season 2, Episode 3, “The Threshold”
Written by Lila Byock and Vinnie Wilhelm
Directed by Andrew Bernstein
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on Wgn
“Men always want a woman who understands them, but when they get one, they learn what a burden it is to be known.”—Kitty Oppenheimer
Being known can be a burden if it leads someone to outsmart you, become bored by you, or decide you’re not worth it. However, being known can also lead someone to recognize when you’re not yourself and need another chance. It can lead them to fight for you. To forgive you.
Manhattan‘s third episode of the season, “The Threshold,” begins with a flashback to January 1939, when Liza was locked in the Seneca Falls Sanatorium after the “incident” (suicide attempt) she alluded to in the series premiere. There is a naked woman on the floor and other women are screaming in the background.

Welcome to Issue 2 of ‘The Marvelous Da7e!’
Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies. Titular allegiance aside, this sphere includes non-Marvel properties.
This week: Directors free up the PR gridlock on information we have on Marvel properties outside of Marvel Studios, so what do we know?
It’s been an interesting time to meander into the second week of a column about superhero movies while my Lr colleagues have declared a Scoop War on (ostensibly) my favorite comics movie studio. Superhero movies should know the side effect of being the biggest, most-expensive game out there is that everyone wants a piece of you. Just ask Michael Jackson, who died four years ago this week: he knew a thing or two about increased scrutiny bringing out the extremes in a person and that person’s audience.

Ricky Martin and Nikki Minaj are the new faces of Mac Viva Glam, following in the footsteps of Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper. They were chosen as a pair because… I really don't know. He's too handsome to wear makeup, and I don't trust her, so the best we can hope for is that the line sells well and raises a ton of money for HIV/AIDS.
Congratulations to The Princess Diaries Heather Matarazzo, who plans to wed her longtime girlfriend Caroline Murphy now that New York has marriage equality. This will be no quick trip to City Hall, with a spring wedding for 200+ guests planned.
While Nom reportedly transported 13 busloads of protesters for New York City, claims that they had over 10,000 people protesting other people's happiest days just don't add up.

Durham, N.C. - During lunch a filmmaker tells me that of all the festivals he’s attended with his movies, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is the only one he wants to attend as a spectator. He enjoys how the various screens and activities aren’t spread all over the city. There’s a relaxed atmosphere as the festival-goers aren’t hustling hard to get tickets to sold out screenings. It’s a sweet Southern festival in the middle of Tobacco Road. Even the world’s biggest superstar just hangs out with the festival goers inside of hiding behind a wall of security.
Who is the superstar? Elmo! And we have an exclusive chat with him at the end of this column.
The film selection was once more top notch. An ample number of documentaries received their world debut in Durham. There were a few films that had built a buzz at Sundance,...

Oh Hawaii Five-0 (TV), how I've missed you. Your snark, your very pretty cast, your epic bromance; it's cruel to be kept away from your awesome for so long. And there were so many hilarious things to enjoy in this episode, I don't know where to start without sounding like a fangirl – which I am. Superheroes, ComicCon, high-speed beach chases, and of course, the long awaited return of arch nemeses. A mother and yet another annoying kid are enjoying the pool outside a hotel when a body crashes into a tent. The body is Superman – or actually, Superman's much lamer cousin who can't actually fly, Splatman. But before we get into why some guy in tights does a swan-dive off the tenth floor, let's get some bromance. Specifically, Steve (Alex O'Loughlin) doesn't like it when Danny (Scott Caan) has secrets, namely, the contents of his lunch. Watching them fighting over...

Chris Colfer’s big screen debut, both acting and writing, has a director. Saved! and United States of Tara’s Brian Dannelly is set to direct Struck By Lightning as soon as Colfer wraps the season for Glee. That’s going to bring an interesting sensibility to the film.
I was curious how much attention a mainstream publication would give to Auctus, the gay gladiator in Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. TV Guide gave a character rundown, and didn’t mention him at all. So there’s that.
But when they talked about the upcoming glut of romantic comedies on television, they did call Happy Endings a winner, and one reason was “the chauvinistic guy friend (but this time he's gay!)”
Nasa just added an additional shuttle flight for Atlantis to resupply the international Space Station. There is concern that there is no money in the budget to pay for the flight,...

Can we trust him?
Agent Collier weighed the question. It is a question we ought to be asking ourselves. Should we believe Blake Sterling? What are Raymond Jarvis' intentions? Is Simon Lee credible? Should we place our trust in Sean Walker?
After this episode we know we cannot even trust the expert opinion of a highly trained medical doctor regarding the most fundamental state of a human body. It goes without saying that we never should have trusted a group of men in dark suits to be the federal agents they claimed they were.
Most importantly, we should not expect that the truth shall rise from the 183 re-animated bodies that had been awaiting shipment to Brazil. A week ago Thomas said of the Avias 154 passengers, "We can use them." Now we understand those words. The 183 are neither statement of purpose nor threat of escalation. They are not present objective, but future potential.

It’s funny how time can shift our perceptions. Long, long ago, way back in 1997, South Park was a counter-cultural revolutionary of a TV show, an ode to all things sexual and scatological that looked like it had been animated in the creators’ garden shed. Best noted for the ire it drew from parents’ groups and the weekly deaths of perma-hoodied fourth-grader Kenny, it bore all the markings of a flash-in-the-pan success, tie-in merchandise quickly shifted by the million and a movie fast-tracked to the multiplexes almost immediately.
Fast forward nearly twenty (twenty!) years later, and far from having been consigned to television history, South Park is an establishment icon; still brave and boundary-pushing, but revered by the majority, not feared, as much a...
