Jack Dee's style of comedy is heavily inspired by that of the late, great Les Dawson. Both wear a look of perpetual gloom, and tell jokes full of interesting, quirky observations. 'Happy Hour' ran for two seasons on B.B.C.-1 at the start of the Noughties. 'Mr.Widget' had plenty to get his comedic juices going, such a routine about 'Pokemon' ( "Tell your kids you think its good, clean fun. They'll go off it straight away!" ), the N.H.S. ( "Its no use complaining about an ambulance taking half an hour to reach you in an emergency if you live half an hour from the nearest hospital!" ) and the fascination of children for everything in the adult world ( "I saw a bloke on a fork-lift truck this morning!" ).
There were also filmed sequences with Dee investigating unusual hobbies, such as collecting briar pipes or visiting gay clubs ( the latter ended with him running full pelt from a pack of excited customers ).
Less successful were the contributions of 'Jed Cake', a so-called virtual reality comedian voiced by ( and modelled on ) Hugh Dennis.
Each edition concluded with Dee saying to the audience "Why don't we think about what happened here tonight".
It was a good vehicle, and one wishes he had done a few more series, instead of moving onto 'Live At The Apollo' which showcased other comics.
