Fall Frights: Silent Hill (Film Review)

4 October 2009 3:07 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Silent Hill - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 4/2006

Sure, when the competition is the likes of Doom, Resident Evil: Apocalypse and the, ahem, oeuvre of Uwe Boll, there’s really nowhere to go but up. This time, though, you get more of a sense of a filmmaker committing to making a real movie out of the source material instead of just hitching a who-cares plot onto a marketable title. Not that the storyline of Silent Hill is especially complex, but director Christophe Gans and screenwriter Roger Avary are clearly committed to recreating the game experience in the cinematic medium; having never played it myself, »

Mr. October: Dani Filth

3 October 2009 1:30 PM, PDT | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

Either you’re a Cradle of Filth fan, or you’re not, but even if you don’t listen to the music of the amazing metal band fronted by Dani Filth (sort of a cross between a musician, an evil warlock, and a British person), you won’t be able to deny Dani’s filthy charm. The dark enforcer of heavy metal and all things darkness has a surprisingly funny side to go along with his incontrovertible sex appeal. In 2003 he voiced the "Dominator" in the feature-length animated film of the same name and starred in the horror film Cradle of Fear. You can hear his collaborative work with Claudio Simonetti and the band Daemonia on the soundtrack of the Argento horror film The Mother of Tears. Now Dani’s latest creation, The Gospel of Filth, is causing us to get our panties in a tizzy. This collection of essays on the occult, »

10 Awesome Foreign Actresses in Movies You Must See!

They're young, beautiful and talented, but some of them maybe quite unfamiliar to some of you. In our latest List of 10, tMF compilled 10 Foreign (if you like, Non-American) actresses and the must-see movies that made them 'hot properties' locally. Some of them joined Hollywood already - but have you seen them at their Best?

- - -

- - - It's a pity many of the roles given to them in Hollywood are not what you can call 'prestige' roles. Most of them are given the usual run-of-the-mill characters. Why not take a good look at their previous works and find out why we think they're awesome!

# 10 - Maria Valverde (Spain) - Maria Valverde was born in Madrid and says she always wanted to become an actress. She finally fulfilled her dream at the age of 16 with a leading role in Manuel Martín Cuenca movie, La flaqueza del bolchevique. »

Sound Off For Silent Hill: The Sequel

16 September 2009 3:10 PM, PDT | HollywoodNorthReport.com | See recent HollywoodNorthReport.com news »

Screenwriter Roger "Pulp Fiction" Avary and producer Samuel Hadida of Davis Films will reunite for a Toronto-lensed sequel to their 2006 video game feature adaptation Silent Hill. The first film, lensed in Ontario, based on the Konami video game, starred actors Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Canadian actresses Laurie Holden, Deborah Kara Unger and Tanya Allen, directed by Christophe "Brotherhood Of The Wolf" Gans for TriStar Pictures. Davis Films plan to shoot the new film in 2010, after they wrap Resident Evil: Afterlife, now prepping in Toronto with star Milla Jovovich. Roger Avary And Samuel Hadida Returning To Silent Hill

15 September 2009 8:16 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida intend to take another stab at the “Silent Hill” franchise, which should begin filming as soon as Davis Films finishes production of the upcoming Milla Jovovich vehicle “Resident Evil 4.” As a fan of both the video game series and the film adaptation, I’m fairly excited about the prospect of a sequel, though I’m hoping “Brotherhood of the Wolf” mastermind Christophe Gans returns to place his insanely eerie style on this grossly underrated franchise. After all, it was his knack for creepy visuals and moody atmosphere that made the film a success, regardless of what other genre-related websites would have you believe. If Gans decides to skip the flick, there’s always the director’s forthcoming comic book movie “Fantomas” to look forward to. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. On a related note, “Silent Hill »

Screenwriter, producer returning to Silent Hill

15 September 2009 7:22 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

News is breaking from the Toronto International Film Festival that screenwriter Roger Avary and producer Samuel Hadida have signed contracts to make a sequel to Silent Hill.

Avary wrote the script for the 2006 movie while Hadida produced under his Davis Films banner. No storyline has been revealed yet but the first film chose to go with an original premise and use characters and situations outside of what appeared in the first Konami video game.

Silent Hill is one of the video game publisher's star properties. Falling under the genre classification of survival horror, each game is about a new person entering the mist-enshrouded small town of Silent Hill in search of answers to the whereabouts of their loved ones. When they start to explore the deserted buildings and streets of the town they encounter twisted human-looking creatures and outright horrific shapes. 50 Essential Foreign Films 2000-2008 (Part 1) - Spotlight on French Cinema

2 September 2009 4:17 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Films on the cutting edge. That's how I would describe the 50 movies on this list. While some moviegoers may find it an 'alien' experience to refer to sub-titles in understanding what's happening on the big screen, a good number of audiences are totally enjoying the different and often surprising take by many foreign filmmakers, nothwithstanding the language barrier.

Content-wise, the 50 movies feature stories about war and peace, love and romance, family affairs, coming-of-age tales, cultural and religious diversity, social issues (including prostitution and abortion) and personal - celebrating life or facing death with dignity. Coverage-wise, tMF list down many of the best foreign films from 2000 until last year from the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and about 15 other countries in Europe, North and Latin America and Asia-Pacific.

Dances With Werewolves gets in step

30 June 2009 8:33 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Noah Segan, the busy young genre star who’s got the acclaimed Deadgirl (pictured) heading for limited theatrical release next month, Someone’S Knocking At The Door doing the festival circuit and All About Evil and Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever waiting in the wings, gave us the heads-up about yet another horror project occupying his time.

It’s called Dances With Werewolves, and it reunites him with Someone’S Knocking director/co-writer Chad Ferrin.

“Dances With Werewolves is a working title, and the movie is a classic American romance which will be done mostly in the Lakota language,” Segan tells Fango. “Set against the pioneering days of the Wild West, the insecurity of Reconstruction after the Civil War and the tumultuous relationship between white settlers and Native Americans, we examine how encroaching civilization drives a tribe, as a last resort, to invoke lycanthropy to defend their land and way of life. »

New photos of actress Monica "Brotherhood Of The Wolf" Bellucci, reveal her as the witch 'Veronica' in The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the upcoming Disney adventure, directed by Jon Turteltaub, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, starring actors Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel. Premise of the new film follows average college student (Baruchel) reluctantly recruited to work for a sorcerer (Cage), who gives him a crash course in the art/science of magic to prepare him for a battle against the forces of darkness in modern Manhattan. ‘Conan’ Loses Ratner As Director, And Gains Who?

The world was devastated when it was announced that Brett Ratner would be directing the upcoming Conan reboot.  Maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but there was definitely no joy in Whoville.  More recently things have been set right again and Ratner has been detached from the project.  So who's lining up to direct the film now?  Chud has just posted a story detailing who they believe to be on the short list and why, and we're curious as to what you think of the possible names. Pretend for a minute that Conan's distributor, Lionsgate, actually gives a flying double-edged battle axe what you think.  Take a look at the directors currently in contention and let your voice be heard below. Christophe Gans (Brotherhood Of The Wolf, Silent Hill) - Of the four names, Gans is my choice for the job.  He's shown fantastic style with action and creature/character effects, and »

The nominees for the 35th Annual Saturn Awards were announced today, and fright features went largely unrepresented among the multiple noms for the likes of The Dark Knight, Iron Man, et al. Among horror/creature features, only Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Let The Right One In scored multiple nods, taking three each.
