Johan returns home from Louvain university to his native town, on foot. Locals hesitate to point him the shortest route to his uncle Willem's inn, which is through a cursed wood, but he soon gets and follows directions. He passes other travelers, notably the Spanish nobleman Don Christobal, with pouting, pet-parrot-obsessed daughter Rosita, and Indian Otorongo as coachman, who proves quite hostile, trying to drive Johan off the road or even over him, and picking a fight at the inn inner court. Off road, Johan stumbles upon a strange character, also chased by the Indian, who seems just a shy man, but actually it's the Alverman, who can magically disappear and re-appear elsewhere.

Uncle miller William and his wife Lizelotje wonder how Johan's clothes got so muddy, are startled when ha asks after the tropical bird and golden ring he 'found'. Don Christobal duly tires of spoiled daughter Rosita's endless sulking over lost parrot Arabella. Johan sets out to return the bird at the castle, but on the way must fight Indian coachman Otorongo, who was sent to seek the parrot, which meanwhile nearly gets 'stolen' by Rosita's admirer Guy de Sénancourt, who seems to desire her hand, but rather gets separated from his horse. Johan meets ingratitude from the castle lord, only magic can heal the wounded Alverman.

() Uncle Willem wants to teach Johan the ropes of the miller trade, despite his more promising future as physician, so his aunt suggests to let him enjoy the summer holiday, but he agrees in a few days, claiming he needs to collect healing herbs, actually for the Alverman. When he returns and eludes his uncle, the Alverman has left the attic alone but is found back in the caves, where Johan applies his ointment. They are surprised by the arrival of two consecutive masked robbers, the first a stylish gentleman -actually Guy de Sénancourt- who hides his golden loot in there, the second a henchman Broer, who was sent to collect his master's share. The robbers argue but suspend the dispute to investigate when Alverman's untimely sneeze betrays their presence. With their knowledge of the caves and QAlerman's trick to make spaces dark or light, a ludicrous chase ensues, during which the heroes escape and the rich robber leaves the other behind knocked-down, only to be rescued by Johan, who even seeks to have him nursed incognito at friendly artisan Florian's home.

Using sign language, Johan starts to learn Alverman's strange language, bonding further. They decide to spend some of the gold they took from the robbers cave, by buying shoddy Alverman an elegant frock. The posh tailor is reluctant, until he sees the pouch full of hard cash and agrees thus to redeem the huge debt run up by 'classy' regular Guy de Senancourt, whose latest order is ready, but now sold. The knight arrives later, far from amused, and bribes the gate keeper to let him leave town after curfew, only to be denied re-entry during nocturnal rain as he has no cash left for a second bribe.

While Johan's dog Wolf deals with runaway rogues, he secretly courts Rosita, but her father forbids her dating commoners. Alverman cuts and plays a flute and forges a golden rose, so Rosita can be courted with exquisite serenade and gift, while her maid Simone pretends to be the romantic mark, still more then don Christobal allows.

While Johan tries to train Alverman as miller's helper and practices medicine on another unfortunate local, Rosita and her father admirer the golden rose they got for her. However Rosita decide sit's too much and is determined to return it, a job maid Simone refuses fearing the master's wrath, so the daughter sneaks out cross-dressed. She's found out and her father's spooked horse threw him off, so he ends up needing a ride on a farmer's cart back to the castle. Refusing to believe such fine jewelry could come from a commoner, Don Christobal assumes it must be from dashing suitor Guy de Sénancourt and invites him to the castle instead. Alverman's magic renders him utterly without chance in another confrontation with Johan.

While Don Christobal entertains suitable suitor Guy de Sénancourt at the castle, his henchmen Cipola and Pietro set a trap for Johan, who is trying to teach Alverman the miller trade, by switching one of the flower sacks they load onto the cart with salt and tipping off the city gate guard about this heavily taxed contraband. The pair are jailed till the bailiff arrives, but Alverman's magic enables them to open the bars on a window and escape, while Pietro is recognized and arrested as presumed accomplice, so robber knight Jean must abandon the castle dinner to bail him out.

Johan wonders where Alverman is, but spends his day visiting patients, like the tailor, who recovers well and informs him about what happens in the castle. Alverman returns to his species' magical realm, but king Alberic is displeased he disobeyed instructions and banishes him back to the human world, indefinitely.

Don Christobal objects to Rosita keeping Johan's golden jewel, yet objects to her returning the rose in person, having banned further contact. Yet chasing her with Otorogo, he gets into mount problems, forced to accept Johan's help. Rosita escapes to make out with Johan on a river island, but rival Guy manages to spot and betray them, so Sir locker her in the castle tower, on water and bread until she promises to give up Johan. The Alverman helps Johan eliminating guard Otoronga by way of a sedative and freeing Rosita by rope, while Christobal gets locked up himself, till he promises to set Rosita free.

Don Christobal eagerly hosts 'suitable suitor' Guy de Sénancourt, with aristocrat ancestry since the crusaders, for a castle dinner, but Rosita is reluctant to accept his jewelry gift, let alone his proposal. Cipola is plotting revenge after Guy abandoned him, but accepts promise of rich reward. Johan is forbidden entrance and feels side-lined. Guy searches the castle and stumbles upon a parchment the rich nobleman treasures specially, connected to his rise to the aristocracy from seafaring, to the point of promising Rosita's hand if Guy finds it now it's missing, presumed stolen by Johan.

Guy de Sénancourt blackmails Don Christobal: unless he forces Rosita to wed him, he'll expose de Bobadilla as a buccaneer, born Suykerbuyk, whom the Spanish rewarded with a title. Desperate, the don has Otorongo threaten with violence, but he was prudent enough to bring only a blank parchment and keep the real one in his castle. He returns to guard it, with his accomplices uncle Ben an Cipola, but those are superstitious, hence easily scared. Johan and the Alverman intrude to eliminate the fiends one by one, using Alverman transformation magic and decorative body armor to play ghost, ultimately escaping with the deed.

Johan finds the Alverman fainting with a potentially fatal disease, the only possible remedy being in the herbal manual kept by his aunt Liselotte. It has just been stolen by the travelling cauldron mender, who joins a traveling gypsy show band. Having explained to grateful don Chistobal, Johan gets Otoroga assigned to help retrieve it. Thety too join the band, but the thief is crafty and suspicious enough to manage selling the book to the old fence, despite his reluctance to get blamed for the theft. Johan confronts them.

Just when Johan starts to despair if the cure will work, Alverman recovers completely and believe she can return to Alberik's realm Avalon, having rendered two lasting services, the last being bringing the cure, so the pair heads there. Guy agrees to rob a secret message from the imperial envoy for the mysterious marquess, the chief French spy in the Habsburg Low Countries. He mobilizes his gang to rob the envoy's coach and dispose of proof, but he hid the crucial message so only a bunch of routine letters is found. Guy secretly keeps the envoy locked up in a ruin, but Ben sneaks behind henchman Pietro who comes to feed the prisoner. Guy left behind Johan's medical kit and called his name, so as to make the bailiff believe he and Alverman are the traitorous robbers, and arrest uncle Willem after dismissing his reply the boys are traveling and aunt Liselotte's claim they go to 'fairyland' Avalon.

Johan and the Alverman travel to king Alberic's realm Avalon, where he hopes to be readmitted. They reach a tacky inn, where the publican and his wife try to rob every guest, not just with bad food and wine but also a dexterity gambling scale, which Alverman's magic overcomes after Johan lost all his silver purse. Back home, Guy trysts his lies and false trail will get the bailiff to eliminate Johan for him. Indeed he starts questioning uncle Willem, who even under torture can only say Johan is traveling to Avalon, which his wife's earlier fantastic elaboration rendered even more implausible than a territory on no map. Desperately she goes seek help, which don Christobal provides, securing Willem's release in his custody at the castle.

Johan and his Alverman friend stayed at a dodgy inn, where the publican and his wife try to steal from them serving overpriced rubbish and cheating at gambling, but magic saves Johan's staked silver. They finally arrive at the entrance to Alberik's kingdom. His chief councilor Gilgak's men fail, like Guy's before, to prevent the duo entering. The king wisely refuses the deny hearing the banished Alverman, who claims Johan has the cure for the disease that threatens their entire race. The king agrees to have it tested on a senior courtier's son on deathbed. Gilgak sabotages the cure, but Johan finds out and proves its value.
