Carla Gugino was reluctant to accept the role of Ingrid Cortez. Gugino felt she was too young, at the age of 29, to have an 8 year-old boy and a 12 year old girl as her children. Director Robert Rodriguez told her that his own mother had him and all of his siblings by the time she was thirty, and they were a similar age as the kids in the movie. Gugino was reassured and ultimately accepted the role of Ingrid Cortez.
