In this installment of "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau", you really have to feel sorry for the divers. This is because they are up around the Bering Sea--within the Arctic Circle. And, they are scuba diving!! Uggh! What horrible conditions. Well, it gets worse as they also do some ice diving...which is some of the most dangerous diving you can do!
So why would they go to the frozen hellish north? They've come in search of the walrus--an animal which has managed to maintain excellent numbers because it lives in such an inaccessible region. During the course of the show, Cousteau and his men hang out with the Inuit people and see a lot of wonderful walruses. The most interesting portion is when they come upon an orphan walrus only a few days old. Unlike newer documentaries that are very detached from the animals, in this case they take the pup in and nurse it and care for it until it can transferred to an aquarium in the States. I would have to say that this might just be the cutest episode of all because of this...perhaps even cuter than the one featuring the Sea Otter!!
