Worthy Social Realist Drama From Colombia
lchadbou-326-265923 April 2020
I watched this rare film on a DVD set put out by the Fundacion Patrimonio Filmico Colombiano, without subtitles or captions but despite my limited Spanish I was able to follow most of it as the main part of the story is told visually: we see miners trapped underground after a fire started by the villain, a sexual predator; the tensions among them waiting to be rescued; their family members and significant others outside waiting to learn what has happened. From the introduction I understand the cast consists of non professionals though it appears several of the performers went on to make other movies later. The story is told in flashback as a newspaper reporter goes through back issues of his publication and centers on this incident which happened years ago, at the end we see the baby boy of the main character, a miner whose woman died in childbirth, now fully grown up as a worker himself. The black and white photography is well done and there is dramatic, if occasionally melodramatic, use of musical accompaniment.
