- The international versions of this game outside of Japan are censored because Bowser drinks a bottle of champagne while Princess Toadstool on the other hand is seen as being tipsy since she is also drinking champagne. Their animations are revised to Bowser simply shaking the bottle up and down while Princess Toadstool tosses it up in the air.
- In the Super Famicom version of Mario Kart much of the features in this game has been later altered or removed for the SNES version, the following includes
- The title screen featured a drawing of an Umbrella with writing on it.
- The Super Mario Kart logo featured a lower case o.
- Yoshi's sprite head is smaller in the Super Famicom version while his head is slightly bigger in the SNES version.
- The race course list is in Japanese text rather than English text in the SNES version, but the player is not required to read Japanese text as the player is racing anyways.
- The victory animation for Bowser depicts him drinking his champagne which was changed in the SNES version to having him pose with the drink.
- Princess Toadstool can be seen sipping her champagne while the SNES version shows her tossing her drink in the air.
- These changes for the SNES is likely because it depicted Bowser and Princess Toadstool drunk.
- The game's box art in Japan is different from international versions. It shows the cast of racers with Bowser whom appears to be attempting to grab Princess Peach, while Yoshi on the other hand sticks out his tongue that suggests he has a voracious appetite. This is censored in international versions where the artwork was re-drawn to avoid any references to violence and cannibalism: Bowser instead has a shocked expression while Yoshi has a relaxed smile. On the other hand, the Japanese box art shows the sky being in sunset while the box art for international versions shows the sky at daytime.
