"Tach Herr Dokter - Der Heinz Becker Film" is a German movie from 1999, so this one is already almost 20 years old. It runs for slightly under 90 minutes and was directed by Gernot Roll, one of Germany's greatest cinematographers ever, but when he is the man in charge behind the camera, then the outcome is usually not that impressive sadly. His co-director here is Gerd Dudenhöffer and he is also the man in charge of basically everything associated with this project as he is also the writer and the one playing the main character. He also does so in the television series "Familie Heinz Becker" as this film is actually a spin-off from that one. But looking at the two ratings, it is not well-received at all compared to the show. And while I cannot comment on the show I have to confirm it for this movie. Not even the presence of Horst Krause who I usually really love could save this one for me.
There are definitely some funny scenes here and there and these are at their best when the film comedy-wise steps on the territory of Loriot and focuses on comedy about German language and grammar mostly. Or about accents as a lot of the jokes rely on the character's heavy Saarland accents. Very fittingly, Dudenhöffer, Urig (nice name) and Hoffsten also originate from the Saarland themselves. But apart from that, I was not impressed at all. The performances where mostly so-so only and the script gave them almost nothing to work with beyond the frequently mediocre (sometimes even try-hard) comedy. And lets be honest, the song used for the closing credits was downright horrible and did not fit the movie at all. Maybe you need to be from the Saarland yourself and really love "Familie Heinz Becker" in order to end up appreciating this film we have here. I myself did not and that's why I give it a thumbs-down. Not recommended, even if I respect Dudenhöffer's attempt.
