Sivaji Ganesan was nearly dropped from the film because A. V. Meiyappan was dissatisfied with his performance and dialogue delivery. It was "Arignar" C. N. Annadurai, who convinced Meiyappan to retain Ganesan in the film.
Poet Kannadasan acted in a minor role as a court judge. He had declined the offer of being one of the film's lyricists.
Ganesan was paid a monthly salary of Rs. 250, unadjusted for inflation.
All the three male leads - Sivaji Ganesan, S. S. Rajendran and S. V. Sahasranamam - were theatre artists.
Raja Sulochana was initially cast as the female lead, but opted out as she was then pregnant, and was eventually replaced by Sriranjani Jr.
