Over his remarkable career on the small screen, Beau Bridges has garnered 16 Emmy Award nominations, including three wins. This year, with his recurring role on “Homeland,” Bridges is well-positioned to add a 17th nomination to his awards resume, this time in Best Guest Drama Actor.
Bridges, portraying Vice President Ralph Warner, appeared in four episodes of the Showtime series this season: “Andante”; “Clarity”; “All In”; and the season finale, “Paean to the People.” Warner, who is on unsteady terms with his boss, the increasingly unpopular President Elizabeth Keane (Elizabeth Marvel), finds himself lobbied by Senator Sam Paley (Dylan Baker), an opponent of Keane’s, to help invoke the 25th Amendment to remove her from office. Warner indeed relieves a flabbergasted Keane of her duties but their antipathy, and Warner’s alliance with Paley, prove short-lived.

P.T. Barnum built a career out of telling people what they wanted to hear, and he’s commonly credited with having boasted that there’s a sucker born every minute. But beneath his carefully constructed gregarious façade, he was a truly terrible human being. “The Greatest Showman” tells a highly sanitized version of Barnum’s days of duping the public and his contemptible exploitation of anyone he could use to make a buck. He not only launched what would become a century and a half of cruelty to animals in circuses but also began his career by exploiting African-Americans and people with disabilities.

During Fox's A Christmas Story: Live event this weekend, the studio had an interesting and cool treat for musical fans. During the show, there was a TV spot for Hugh Jackman's upcoming film The Greatest Showman and what was so cool about that was the fact that the whole thing was done live!
The spot is a little awkward to watch at first, but the more it goes, the better it gets, and it turned out really well. The spot also included Zendaya, Zac Efron, and Keala Settle all performing live. This is a group of incredibly talented individuals.
Inspired by the imagination of P.T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business & tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.

Christmas movies suggest family-friendly, heartwarming tales, designed for peak holiday family moviegoing. And then there’s the other kind — the late-breaking, high-profile, A-list titles designed to hit the box office and Oscar voters’ consciousness. Some of these launched at prestige fall film festivals (“Downsizing,” “Molly’s Game,” “Hostiles,” “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool”); others are bonafide awards contenders (Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread”); and some, like Hugh Jackman vanity musical “The Greatest Showman,” will soon skid into either bad reviews or audience reaction, or both.
Herewith, a ranking of the Christmas movies in order of their likely Oscar prospects.
“The Post” (Fox, December 22)
Metascore: 82.
Strengths: Steven Spielberg’s riveting paean to newspaper journalism and freedom of the press couldn’t be more timely. Early reviews are strong for this true story about The Washington Post’s publication of the Pentagon Papers,...

The cast of The Greatest Showman certainly lives up to the movie's name!
In a live commercial that aired during Fox's musical A Christmas Story Live!on Sunday night, star HughJackman was joined by Zac Efron, Zendaya, and an enormous cast to perform the song "Come Alive" from the upcoming film.
Beginning with a few kids leaving the Christmas Story set and following Jackman -- in his P.T. Barnum ringmaster costume -- towards the back lot containing a large historical set, the performance kicked off with Jackman singing a quieter verse, before going big and tossing his cane to another performer.
As soon as Jackman finished his verse, the camera swung to Efron, with an unexpected mustache, and Zendaya, wearing her character's pink wig, dancing and singing on the steps of a building.

The very amenable cast of the P.T. Barnum musical drama The Greatest Showman graciously agreed to participate in the latest edition of "Crosswalk: The Musical" with James Corden on Thursday night (Dec. 14). But suffice it to say that Zendaya, Zac Efron and Barnum himself, Hugh Jackman, weren't too pleased with the Late Late Show host's diva-like displays as they tried to dodge traffic while singing show tunes on New York's streets.
Jackman, a song-and-dance man with a bit of experience on the Great White Way, was more than willing to share some of his ideas with Corden, who inexplicably kept referring to the actor as...

Fox Searchlight had a lovely Golden Globes nominations morning, notching 15 nominations as Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” continued its Critics Choice surge with seven nominations, followed by Martin McDonagh’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” with six. The other expected drama nominations were Fox’s Steven Spielberg journalism valentine “The Post” (six), Sony Pictures Classics gay love story “Call Me By Your Name” (three), and Warner Bros.’ Christopher Nolan war movie “Dunkirk” (three).
Finally, Working Title/Focus Features’ other World War II drama, “Darkest Hour,” seems to be strictly a Gary Oldman Drama Actor play, while Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread” landed nods for Daniel Day-Lewis and Johnny Greenwood for Score. Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” (A24) posted strong results on the Comedy side (four), but no director nod. In fact, the Globes gave all five director slots to men.

“I was about to do X-Men 2 and a call came from my agent asking if I’d be interested in Bond. I just felt at the time that the scripts had become so unbelievable and crazy, and I felt like they needed to become grittier and real. And the response was: ‘Oh, you don’t get a say. P.T. Barnum was known by others as “The Greatest Showman,” but literally labeled himself “The Prince of Humbugs” as an homage to the way he successfully cheated and tricked his audiences. In the upcoming 20th Century Fox holiday blockbuster, featuring Hugh Jackman as Barnum, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), alleges that the star-studded, pop music-infused biopic romanticizes and inaccurately represents a shameful time in America’s history.
The organization is now urging moviegoers to skip out on “The Greatest Showman.” After 36 years of protests and documenting abuse against various circuses (including the eponymous one Barnum created), the organization reduced attendance and successfully helped to shut down the disgraced Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circuses. Although the film uses CGI instead of wild animals, there are many circuses that still participate in this behavior.

That's because it's crunch time for awards season. That coveted last week of the year is where most heavy hitters want to be released, because they'll be freshest in the minds of Oscar voters. We've finally come to the end of 2017, which means: lots of under-the-wire Oscar hopefuls! The return of the Bellas! A brand spankin' new Star Wars! Along with the final push of awards contenders (Steven Spielberg! Paul Thomas Anderson! It’s no secret that La La Land reignited Hollywood’s hunger for a modern musical, and that’s despite the fact that Damien Chazelle’s dreamy love story was piped at the post by Moonlight in spectacular fashion during February’s Oscar ceremony.
Perhaps more than anything else, La La Land stands as concrete proof that a modern-day musical is not only economically feasible, but also has the chance to become a critical and commercial hit – in the right hands, of course – and one director stepping up to the plate later this year is Michael Gracey.
His movie? The Greatest Showman, an original drama which looks to chronicle the remarkable rags-to-riches story of P.T. Barnum, who is often credited as the founding father of show business. Trading mutants for musicals is Logan actor Hugh Jackman, who calls upon his Les Misérables experience in today’s brand new trailer for the pic.

The huge ensemble cast also includes Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Paul Sparks, and Zendaya. Okay I have to honestly say, this looks magnificent, I really can't wait to see this. Maybe there's a chance it could be another outstanding year-end movie sliding in the last few days of 2017. No really, it looks great. Have fun. Team Legends may have bitten off more than they could chew on tonight’s episode of Legends of Tomorrow. They head to 1870 to track down an anachronism, a saber-tooth tiger and contain it. The catch? The tiger is a part of P.T. Barnum (guest star Billy Zane)’s circus of unique beings. It was nice having Amaya back on the team again. Her confession about being afraid of losing control of her powers is an intriguing aspect. It’s quite similar to the Hulk and Raven of the Teen Titans where both have to contain the animalistic force within. At least Nate was able

After fixing time and obtaining permission from Rip and the Time Bureau to continue their operations, the Legends are back in business on Legends of Tomorrow. In this episode, titled "Freakshow," the team heads to 1870 to try and deal with an anachronism that turns out to be an extinct animal at P.T. Barnum's circus. While the team hopes this job will be clean and easy, things get a little more complicated than they intended and they travel to 1942 to ask Amaya for help with one last mission.

Fall is the season of Real-People movies — the biopics that often fuel Oscar hopes. Recent weeks brought “The Battle of the Sexes,” “Stronger,” and “Victoria & Abdul” and there’s more than a dozen to come, including “Marshall,” “The Post,” “Darkest Hour,” and “The Current War.” There’s good reason to believe that a biopic might produce awards. In the last five years, 28 of the 100 Oscar acting nominees played real-life characters, as did four of the 20 winners. But when it comes to the box office, the odds aren’t as kind.

An Oscar movie could hit theaters at any time during the year -- as far as the rules are concerned, it only needs to be released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 to be eligible -- but everyone knows that all of the true contenders arrive in the last quarter of the year.
I suppose some Academy-worthy movies have already been released: Dunkirk, right? The Big Sick and Get Out less likely, but perhaps! I guess some people believe Wonder Woman could really get a Best Picture nomination.... So, instead of considering this our first round of Oscar predictions, think of it as a Ones to Watch list to prepare you as studios start showing off their films that could earn noms at next year's Academy Awards. (Which are still five months away, Fyi, on March 4, 2018.)
