With ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’, Guy Ritchie returns to his storytelling roots, reminiscent of his earlier works like ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ and ‘Snatch’. This film, while standing on the familiar ground of high-stakes, artistically violent narratives, uses a historically inspired backdrop unlike any other. A high-octane blend of fact and fiction dazzles as Ritchie applies his signature quick cuts and gritty aesthetic to the murky waters of WWII espionage. Rooted in True WWII Espionage Inspired by the real-life operations of Britain’s Special Operations Executive (Soe), known for their unorthodox warfare strategies during World War II, ‘The

Guy Ritchie has directed everything from low-budget hits like the crime caper "Snatch" to the $1 billion monster hit that was 2019's live-action "Aladdin" remake. But the director has also been behind some pretty big misfires, most notably 2017's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword." Ritchie has been on a tear lately though, releasing three movies in theaters over the last 13 months. Unfortunately for the filmmaker and all involved, every single one of those movies has disappointed -- if not outright flopped -- at the box office.
This past weekend saw the release of "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare" in theaters in the U.S. Released by Lionsgate, the World War II film took in just $8.9 million, placing fourth on the charts behind "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" ($9.5 million), which was in its fourth weekend. With the sole exception of Zack Snyder, there might not be a director currently working who is more fascinated by telling stories about tough guys committing violent acts while barely breaking a sweat more than Guy Ritchie. From his earliest works like "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch" all the way to "The Gentlemen", "The Covenant," and "Wrath of Man," the British filmmaker has been all too happy to stay in his lane and pump out his unique brand of action movie year in and year out. This week's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," however, might as well be the poster child for Ritchie's overriding obsession.

Back in 2003, veteran James Bond actor Sean Connery portrayed the role of Allan Quatermain in a film called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The film was a complete disaster as the reviews addressed the film as just terrible and unpleasant to watch… at that time.
With the recent failure of superhero movies, it seems that people are giving the old movies a second chance and this week, it’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Taking to X, people talked about how the movie is actually good compared to modern films!

Brad Pitt’s character ‘One Punch’ Mickey in the film Snatch had to be dirty, smelly, and scruffy and the actor was willing to go the extra mile for the demands of the character. The character was part of a gypsy-like group of Irish travelers and Pitt decided not to wash himself to get into the skin of his character. Interestingly, old habits die hard for Pitt, who reportedly found a way around having to wash himself regularly.

Sean Connery’s legacy in film history is irrefutable just as much as his contribution to the evolution of late 20th-century cinema. Despite the era’s misgivings and misogyny, Connery remains an irrevocable icon for his role as James Bond in the franchise’s first live-action film Dr. No. His blue-eyed, broad-shouldered, and laid-back charm not only hypnotized millions but also brought the Scotsman fame on a level previously unheard of.

Sadder still, the actor blatantly used his fame as a tool to lord over industry producers and directors for a bigger payday.

Cinematic universes may be on the decline, but Guy Ritchie has just stumbled upon the potential for a fun one with his frequently amusing “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” a light and sloppy World War II caper that reimagines Winston Churchill (Rory Kinnear) as Nick Fury, and a series of rakish, Nazi-killing brutes as his own personal Avengers.
Men on a mission films like “The Guns of the Navarone” might seem to be the more obvious points of reference here, but by the time Churchill is spitting orders at Ian Fleming (“Slow Horses” shitheel Freddie Fox), assigning real-life actress/spy Marjorie Stewart to some “Casablanca” cosplay with a sadistic Nazi commander, and waiting by the phone to hear if his top-secret wrecking crew has managed to sink the German ships that supply Hitler’s fleet of U-boats, saving the world merely seems like the set-up for the bigger and better...

There's nobody quite like Guy Ritchie. One of the notable directors who has repeatedly dipped toes in both extremes of the budgetary pool, his unmitigated success with early features like "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch" eventually gave way to blockbusters on the level of "Sherlock Holmes" and "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" -- all bearing his unmistakable fingerprints as much as his various mid-budget efforts do, which recently span five total films in the last five years. Though perhaps not considered a household name among the most casual of moviegoers, chances are high that the hardworking Ritchie's brand of rapid-fire editing, roguish characters with snappy dialogue, and oh-so-English humor (humour?) are instantly recognizable on some level, at least.
Yet that's perhaps the same reason why "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," his newest World War II action/comedy loosely based on historical events, feels jarringly at odds...

Britain’s contributions to the cinematic form have been vast and glorious. Aardman Animation. Alfred Hitchcock. Olivia Colman. 007. High up that list, too, is the British gangster movie – sure, America may often get the genre limelight with classics like Goodfellas, The Godfather trilogy, and Scarface, but nobody does dark, gritty, violent, and darkly humorous quite like the British. You certainly wouldn’t catch football-hardman-turned-movie-hardman Vinnie Jones rolling down the street with some poor geezer’s bonce trapped in his car window anywhere else, that’s for sure!

The Gentlemen is the latest entry into Guy Ritchie‘s chaotic and hilarious world of crime. The Netflix series is created by Ritchie himself and it is set in the world of Ritchie’s 2019 film of the same name. It follows the story of Eddie Horniman, who unexpectedly inherits the title of Duke and his father’s whole estate. Still, he is more surprised as what he doesn’t know is that his father was in cahoots with criminals, who were growing cannabis on their estate. Eddie decides that he wants to rid his family estate of all the weed plants and criminals, but before he can do that he might have to do some criminal things himself first. The Gentlemen stars Theo James in the lead roles with Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Vinnie Jones, Ruby Sear, Joely Richardson, Giancarlo Esposito, Alexis Rodney, and Harry Goodwins starring in supporting roles.

While forgettable to anyone not tasked with remembering it, Guy Ritchie’s 2019 feature film “The Gentlemen” does embody the two distinct halves shaping the writer-director’s career to date. At the height of its binary world are the aristocrats: affluent Englishmen whose titles and estates grant them access to a refined class of lords and ladies. On the other end are the criminals: conniving Brits who do the dirty work necessary just to get by. What brings them together is Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), an American living in London who builds a massive marijuana business by hiding his farms under the sweeping landscapes of the rich and fortified. The aristocrats get a hefty kickback to support their lavish lifestyle, and the criminals get the relative safety only wealth can offer. Two classes colliding — which happens once someone inevitably screws up — is what gives “The Gentlemen” its juice. Or it’s supposed to,...

“Deadpool” star Karan Soni (Dopinder) told Variety this week that a ton of surprise cameos were filmed for the upcoming third installment, “Deadpool and Wolverine,” adding: “Let’s just say a lot of people traveled to London [for filming].” One actor who apparently did not make it to London was Vinnie Jones, who debuted as Juggernaut in “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Jones recently told Yahoo Movies UK that he turned down a request to reprise the character in “Deadpool and Wolverine” because getting in his Juggernaut suit isn’t the best experience.
“Funnily enough I just got asked to do ‘Deadpool,’ the new one now, and I spoke to the director and I just said it’s such a drama putting that suit on mentally and physically,” Jones said. “It had its mental toll as well because you’re in it and you can’t do anything all day, you can only drink through a straw.

In 2019, filmmaker Guy Ritchie went back to his crime comedy roots with “The Gentlemen,” a film very much in the vein of early films like “Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels” and “Snatch.” And, of course, in the ensuing years, especially during the pandemic, in the rush and craze for content, everyone wanted a spin-off that would pay handsomely for them, and creators were more happy to oblige.

Watched Meet Joe Black the other night and absolutely lost it when Brad Pitt starts speaking patois.

With The Beekeeper proving to be one of the year’s biggest sleeper hits (we loved it), Jason Statham’s status as an action star is again on solid ground. I say again because Expend4bles, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and a few other movies of his whiffed at the box office. Nevertheless, The Beekeeper proved that Statham can still ace the right vehicle, so we thought now would be a great time to look at his action filmography and choose his best action flick. To note, movies like Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels aren’t included, as they aren’t traditional action movies.

Jason Statham has undeniably become one of the biggest Hollywood blockbuster stars in the world. With his suave British accent, ooziness of a slick demeanour, and brooding tough guy image, he has marked himself as truly commanding actor. However, beneath all of that, lies a real skill for martial arts. Although he initially became known to mainstream audiences for his roles in Guy Ritchie‘s sleek crime capers, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and the genre re-defining Snatch, these movies didn’t give Statham a chance to show off his action skills. Yet, Statham actually has a rich history in many...

After seemingly coming out of nowhere with his slick crime caper Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Guy Ritchie faced the huge task of topping his debut effort with his second movie, Snatch. In the movie, Ritchie built upon his unique style and delivered another smash hit that has since endured a lasting legacy. Revolving around a plethora of characters, Snatch intertwines the lives of the deepest and darkest criminals of London. However, this is done so with a sleekly tight pacing and a splice of humour that would go on to be labelled “acid humour”. What’s striking about Guy Ritchie‘s...

When British producer-director Matthew Vaughn’s latest had its red-carpet premiere in London in mid-January 2024, the film made local headlines for reasons probably not intended by the filmmakers and their distributor, Universal. Alongside the usual PR-driven fluff about the sparkly frocks stars Dua Lipa and Bryce Dallas Howard were wearing, and the argyle-patterned evening gown sported by producer Claudia Schiffer (who is also Vaughn’s partner), there was much ado about Schiffer’s key accessory of the evening: a matching backpack with a round plastic window enclosing her cat Chip, a fetching gray Scottish Fold who also plays a major role in the film.
From where I was sitting, some distance from the stage, Chip looked grumpy and a little alarmed when taken out of the bag and shown off in front of the auditorium. Then again, that breed always looks a little grumpy. Nevertheless, there were soon outraged national media headlines,...

However, in recent years, Ritchie has begun to explore new territories and venture into different genres, slowly shedding his reputation for sleek crime capers. To that, the year 2023 proved to be a busy period for the director as he took on two ambitious projects.

Just four years after the movie hit theaters, Netflix has turned Guy Ritchie's "The Gentlemen" into a TV show. The above teaser trailer for the series offers proof of that, introducing a drug empire, a cast of criminals, and some vintage Ritchie shenanigans.
The teaser admittedly doesn't dive too deeply into the story, but it does do a great job of capturing the vibe. It's all set to the tune of "Time of the Season" by The Zombies, with some welcome narration by Giancarlo Esposito, of "Breaking Bad" and "The Boys" fame. Esposito is just one part of a pretty well-stacked ensemble led by Theo James ("The White Lotus"). Blood, boxing, and quips, this has all of the hallmarks of a classic Guy Ritchie production. It certainly has a similar feeling to the 2020 movie, but it also feels designed to satisfy "Snatch" fans. The official synopsis for the show...

When he burst onto the big screen back in the late ‘90s, Guy Ritchie changed British crime cinema forever – bringing his own distinctive look and feel to a genre with a long tradition. From there, he’s moved into blockbusters, mythical territory, and all-out hardman action tales. And next, he’s trying something new: the small screen. As well as his upcoming features, Ritchie is bringing the world of his 2019 film :a[The Gentlemen]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/the-gentlemen/' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} to TV, in a :a[Netflix]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/tv/features/best-netflix-tv-uk/' target='blank' rel='noreferrer noopener'} series handily also titled _The Gentlemen.

Lionsgate has acquired domestic distribution rights to filmmaker Guy Ritchie’s untitled next film, which is currently in production in Spain. Principal photography wraps this week after the project secured an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, with a cast that includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Henry Cavill, Ezia González, Fisher Stevens and Spanish actor Carlos Bardem (“The Son”).
Ritchie produced the new action film alongside Ivan Atkinson and Black Bear’s John Friedberg. Black Bear handled worldwide sales on the film.

With this year’s New York Comic Con coming to a close, undoubtedly one of the biggest draws of the event was director Matthew Vaughn, who gave details on an upcoming Kick-Ass reboot, why he left X-Men: The Last Stand and his promising upcoming spy thriller Argylle.
In the wide-ranging Saturday panel that our own David Arroyo attended, Matthew Vaughn said that the Kick-Ass movies had such a positive impact on people that he thinks new characters are also worth exploring. “Kick-Ass sort of changed people’s perception of what a superhero film is at that time. So we’ll be doing it again. So it’s none of the characters from the other Kick-Ass…We’d like to bring them back after the reboot. This reboot is just going off on a tangent that I can’t really talk about now. But it’s fun.”

Fair Play is a 2023 thriller film written and directed by Chloe Domont. The film stars Phoebe Dynevor, Alden Ehrenreich, Eddie Marsan, and Rich Sommer.
“Fair Play” is a movie about ambition and how a professional relationship can affect a romantic relationship. In every place, there is an expression for this that ultimately recommends the same thing: not mixing love and work.
It’s difficult not to do so when, as in this case, both protagonists work ten hours a day and have no time for anything else but the company.
Plot
Emily and Luke are engaged, attractive, and have a promising future. There’s only one problem: they work at the same company, and company protocol doesn’t accept it. The problem arises when she gets promoted and he slowly starts losing his position in the complex corporate organization.
