Movie Reviews: “It’s Complicated”

Like other Nancy Meyers-directed movies (Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want, The Holiday), It's Complicated's target audience is women over 40 -- an underserved market to be sure, but one that has managed to buy up a lot of movie tickets. The Chicago Sun-Times's Roger Ebert, who suggests that It's Complicated will likely draw a big crowd from "gal pals taking a movie break after returning Christmas presents," notes that "not everybody is in a mood for Avatar." But Lou Lumenick in the New York Post suggests that the movie is really "Avatar for women of a certain age, with blond highlights replacing blue skin." Manohla Dargis in the New York Times, who has chastised Hollywood's major studios for overlooking female directors, heaps much praise on Meyers, while at the same time observing that her "vision can be maddeningly narrow and not only because her movies take place in cosseted, largely white worlds where the help is discreetly out of view." Most of the critics reviewing It's Complicated are women and at times sound as if they're leading a cheering section. For example, Linda Barnard writes in the Toronto Star: "A rarity among Hollywood movies, where senior sex is usually either an aberration or a punchline, It's Complicated really isn't. It's just entertaining. Let's hope the studios are listening." Lisa Kennedy in the Denver Post agrees, writing, "Making us laugh in telling ways, especially in a time-worn genre like the romantic comedy, can be tough. There's a reason for the saying 'Death is easy, comedy is hard.'" Most male critics seem equally charmed. "It's Complicated isn't; it's pretty simple," writes Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune. "It's simply a good time, a relatively adult and easygoing conveyance for three ace performers of a certain age, working through a few comic machinations created by writer-director Nancy Meyers.

Writer/director Nancy Meyers (What Women Want, The Holiday) brings another romantic comedy to the screen with It's Complicated featuring veteran actors Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. This film about love and divorce puts a spin on the Other Woman story, and will leave most older women either shaking their head in disbelief or hopeful for re-kindled love.
Jane (Streep) is the mother of three grown kids, and ten years after their divorce is on amicable terms with her ex-husband, attorney Jake (Baldwin). He is remarried to Agness (Lake Bell), a much younger woman who had been Jake's mistress. Jane has hit her stride as owner of a bakery/cafe, and looking to expand the house she'd moved into after the divorce.

Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin in It's Complicated
Photo: Universal Pictures
In my book Nancy Meyers is more hit than miss. Of her five directorial outings I have only missed The Parent Trap and would say Something's Gotta Give is the one I liked the least out of the bunch and I still liked that one. I particularly enjoyed The Holiday and What Women Want is a satisfying diversion. That said, I enjoyed It's Complicated more than all of them. Meryl Streep continually proves she is to never be doubted and Alec Baldwin carries over his award-winning "30 Rock" persona to feature film with absolute ease. Baldwin and Streep play off each other as if they had been doing it for years.
At the center of the story is Jane (Streep) a divorced mother of three with a highly successful Santa Barbara bakery. Jake (Baldwin) is her lawyer ex-husband who is

Fourteen Questions for It’s Complicated’s Nancy Meyers

During a few scenes in It’s Complicated, the latest comedy from writer-director Nancy Meyers (What Women Want, Something’s Gotta Give), I laughed so hard that tears came out of my eyes. Meyers is an unabashedly commercial filmmaker of mainstream glossy comedies for women. Her clout comes from being both writer and director. She makes her movies her way (with a nod to Hollywood’s classic screwball comedies), and has final cut. It’s Complicated throws ex-spouses Meryl Streep and Alex Baldwin into an extra-marital affair that is sexy and hilarious. Baldwin’s Oscar co-host Steve Martin plays Streep’s other love interest, as her two 20-something daughters are caught in …

With Dance Flick and the Fame remake effectively hammering the last nails in the dance movie's coffin (we’re watching you, Footloose remake – don’t be rubbish), producers are heading back to youth sports. With Drew Barrymore’s roller derby flick Whip It getting great reviews across the pond, and everything from American football to, erm, synchronised swimming chalking up the silver-screen treatment this decade, it's now the turn of skipping in Jump Around. Not just any old skipping mind you – double-dutch jump-roping (we think it’s a slightly more refined version of "Bumper Car Bumper Car"), which officially became an officially-recognised school sport in New York this year. Duane Adler, who co-wrote hit dance flicks Step Up and Save The Last Dance is on the books to rewrite and direct Jump Around, a screenplay based on that sport, with What Women Want producer Matt Williams on board too.

It’s Complicated Trailer: Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin Get It On

Alec Baldwin is randomly crying. Meryl Streep is a little bit of a slut. Steve Martin, still crazy. And writer/director Nancy Meyers -- purveyor of such estrogen-infused classics as What Women Want, Something's Gotta Give and The Holiday -- is back again for another round of romcom with It's Complicated. This time, she's taking the story of a divorced woman (Streep) who starts having a fling with her fast-talking ex-husband (Baldwin), even though he's now married to a younger woman (Lake Bell) and she's got a thing with her architect (Steve Martin).
It's all very derivative -- the kind of romantic comedy you take with a dose of promethazine (via suppository, of course) for your arthritis. You know, the ultimate sequel to Meyers' Mel Gibson collaboration, What Old People Want. Alas, there is no doubt that Alec Baldwin will be his stock brand of hilarious and Meryl Streep will be her stock brand of graceful, classy

Mel Gibson thinks Scotland would make him get drunk.
Mel - a recovering alcoholic who was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) in 1984 and 2006 - said he hasn't been back to the UK country since shooting 'Braveheart' in 1995 because he fears it would have a damaging effect on him .
He said: "I haven't gone back since because I'm afraid. I'd never get sober for one thing, and to have to run around in a dress... it's cold up there!"
Despite his reluctance to return, the 53-year-old 'What Women Want'
star admits Scotland still holds a special place in his heart.
He added: "On the way to the premiere in Scotland the crowd was 50-deep
and I couldn't believe there was so much feeling and fervour about the
subject. It hit a chord, definitely."
Earlier this month, Mel saw his 2006 conviction for misdemeanour driving under the
