Boos! & Whoop-doos!: A Decade of Glossy Schlock!

22 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The Drive-In? Whoop-doo!Boos! & Whoop-doos!: A Decade of Glossy Schlock! The Aughts ushered in a new era of glossy schlock that rose quietly from the ashes of the once burgeoning Drive-In scene. The Drive-In Theater has always stood as a temple for exploitive, low-grade cinema. But by 1999, even the most popular of these late night playgrounds had crumbled to dust. They rose to prominence in the late forties and early fifties, and then experienced a quaint resurgence in the late 70s and early 80s. By the time this decade kicked off to shouts of "Y2K", they had all been wiped clean off the face of the Cineplex landscape. But their aura and mystic still lingered around many a DVD shelf like a ploom of stink bomb smoke. If there's one lasting remnant the Drive-In era gave us, it's the Z-grade flick. TVGuide.com caught up Lauren Velez, who plays the high-powered lieutenant, to get her take on the forbidden romance, which serial killer storyline has been her favorite and hints on who shot Deb.

Dexter Season 4 Episode 9 Promo/Preview : 'Hungry Man'

17 November 2009 9:26 AM, PST | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

With eight episodes in the can, Dexter Season 4 enters its third act this Sunday with "Hungry Man" and all of us are trapped in the writers' cleverly crafted "Who Shot Deb and Lundy?" mystery. Episode 4.08 "Road Kill" will be forever remembered for introducing us to the Trinity Killer shuffle (who knew that John Lithgow was that nimble?). The enigma that is Arthur "Twinkletoes" Mitchell was further unfolded as we find out the genesis for his ritual of three kills. At the age of 10, he inadvertently caused the death of his sister in the bathtub, which in turn caused his mother to commit suicide by jumping off a building. Sometime after that, his father "died," as he put it (more like he got pummeled by a hammer as Dexter puts it). Phew, that's a lot of take in. Is that enough to push a man to a 30 »

Television Tourniquet: 'Dexter' Episode 4.8

"Road Kill" Written By: Melissa Rosenberg & Scott Reynolds Directed By: Ernest Dickerson Original Airdate: 15 November 2009 In This Episode… Dexter feels exceedingly guilty for killing the douchebag photographer.  Of course, being Dexter, he doesn't fully understand what he is feeling.  Miami Pd has pinned Farrow's murder on his assistant, so Dexter is off the hook, but he has decided that the only way to get rid of that icky feeling in his stomach is to kill Trinity. Dex finds out that Arthur is going to Tampa for a 4 Walls charity build.  The cycle starts again.  He finds a "sciencey" convention going on in the area »

Dexter Review: "Road Kill"

16 November 2009 4:45 AM, PST | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

The main plot of this week's Dexter episode appeared to mirror the issue the show is currently having.

Dexter went from trying to kill Trinity to actually saving his life, as Arthur was prepared to commit suicide until his friend/enemy made a last-second save. You can read all about these developments and more in our most recent episode guide.

The same back-and-forth seems to be going on with the series itself. It's not sure where it wants to go with the Dexter/Trinity relationship.

For the majority of "Road Kill," Dexter was stuck on the issue of remorse. Did he feel badly or not after killing an innocent last week? The answer, via Dexter's internal monologue, appeared to be no, but his reaction after learning of his mistake was a resounding yes.

The most intriguing aspect of this season's storyline is how Dexter tries to forecast his own future via Arthur's life. »

(S0408) "Born in blood, both of us." - Dexter on his and the Trinity Killer's creation of their "dark passengers"

Dexter and the Trinity Killer aren't the only ones on the show who have been paying back their anger for the pain the world has dealt them. The audience is in on the same game.

We've been sitting through weeks of boring and dry subplots about secret affairs and office romances that we couldn't care less about if we were actually one of their co-workers. But now we've been rewarded for our patience with some seedy and very interesting details about Dexter's main prey, the Trinity Killer, a man held in a very weak cage of despair and anger.

Fall Frights: Joy Ride (Film Review)

4 October 2009 3:25 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Joy Ride - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 10/2001

Joy Ride passes one of the tests of a good thriller, which is that when the characters approach a closed room or mysterious package or, in this case, a car trunk within which a surprise is waiting, it's not easy to predict what the surprise will be. In this case, college student Lewis (Paul Walker), his ne'er-do-well brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) and Venna (Leelee Sobieski), a girl Lewis is sweet on, have been directed by a psychopath who's been stalking them to pull over and open the trunk of their car. What's inside won't be revealed here, but it's a nice twist that's both logical and provides a quiet little chill.

Both of those qualities inform the whole of Joy Ride, »

Kurt Loder Reviews 'Zombieland'

2 October 2009 12:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From MTV.Com: "Zombieland" may be the first undead road-trip movie. The picture is light and unassuming, but it has a jaunty spirit; it's funny beyond the call of genre and — the cool part, of course — wonderfully disgusting.

The premise has a nice, low-budget simplicity. A nationwide zombie plague has turned the country into a wasteland of stumbling gut-munchers (although they can move pretty fast when they want to). Only a few uninfected outriders remain, following 10 simple rules to stay alive. One of these is "Beware of bathrooms" (zombies like to crawl up on you under toilet-stall doors). Another — which should be retroactively posted in every monster movie ever made — is: "Check the backseat!"

J.J. Abrams: Pop-culture polymath

4 September 2009 12:32 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Welcome back to our EW University course on TV Auteurs -- a look at some of the people who have had a major role in shaping the medium over the last 50 years. Today, Prof. Dan Snierson offers his overview of the work of J.J. Abrams. If you had to sum up J.J. Abrams neatly in just one word, it would be ...  kinda hard to do. He’s a cross-genre, multi-medium hyphenate who flies a geek flag of many colors. (The boy who grew up on The Twilight Zone, Mission Impossible, Get Smart, James Bond, and Star Wars has crafted a TV resume that boasts credits as diverse as Felicity and Fringe; his movie credits range from Regarding Henry to Cloverfield.) His projects tend to be smart, layered, splashy, angsty, laced with mystery and/or mythology -- plus they just might contain an It Girl in the making (see: Keri Russell, »

Steve Zahn, you rock!

9 August 2009 12:25 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

There are some actors whose mere presence on the bill puts you in a good mood. Patricia Clarkson does this for me. Joan Cusack, Judy Greer, Ben Shenkman, Harry Dean Stanton. Steve Zahn owns this territory. From Reality Bites to Joy Ride, I'll watch just about any movie this guy shows up in. Many I'm willing to wait for the DVD. Management (what kind of movie title is that?), I'm looking at you. So it was with gusto that I hauled my ass out of the heat and caught the 10 a.m. showing of A Perfect Getaway, which incidentally is a great fun piece of air-conditioned throwaway about a couple on their Hawaii hiking trip who run into fingerprint-shaving murderers. There were three people in the theater, which might account for its modest $5+ million opening. But I got my Zahn fix. And I've got a new girl crush on Samantha Who? »

DVD: Push and Knowing

7 July 2009 6:10 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

It's the day you've all been waiting breathlessly for. You can finally watch superpowered Chris Evans, Djimon Hounsou and Dakota Fanning throw things around (with their minds! ooooh) since Push, their flop f/x thriller has arrived on DVD. You can watch it in the privacy of your own dorm room / apartment / house / attic / basement and conjecture about how long Chris Evans career will last now that his agent doesn't want him to do beefcake anymore. Hopefully his agent has seen The Proposal and has realized that beefcake sure isn't hurting Ryan Reynold's career. Or you can watch it and wonder about how well Dakota Fanning will bridge the child star / young adult actress divide.

I don't mean to sound so snarky because against my better judgment I am actually curious to see this. But like I said back in February...

I'm sure it would be better if Mo'Nique was in it. »

John Stockwell To Direct Roadkill

28 May 2009 12:15 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

John Stockwell, whose place in movie heaven shall forever be assured for Into The Blue alone, has signed on to direct the action comedy Roadkill. That’s not to be confused, of course, with the excellent Paul Walker/Steve Zahn/John Dahl thriller, Roadkill, from a few years ago. That movie was titled Joyride for the States and was renamed for the UK. We’d quite like it if Stockwell’s Roadkill were renamed Joyride, to be honest…But we digress. The film tells the story of two amateur private eyes who bite off more than they can chew when they agree to protect a high-end escort. What follows – including female assassins and a potential government conspiracy – tests them to the hilt.Sounds pretty routine to us. Stockwell, despite the majesty of Into The Blue, hasn’t yet directed a movie that’s even come close to touching four-star territory, »
